In the last century, the reservoir was navigable, but in recent years, like other Moscow reservoirs, it serves exclusively to provide the capital with fresh water. In 2021, prices for holidays near the Mozhaisk reservoir have remained virtually unchanged. According to reviews from experienced fishermen, perch, roach, ruffe and chub are well caught in Krasnovidovo. For bleak, ruff, ide and pike, you should go to the Zarechnaya Sloboda area. Myshkino and Babynino are the best places for catching pike perch, pike perch and asp. People come to Pozdnyakovo and Goretovo for carp and roach. The content of dissolved oxygen in water varies with the seasons. At the beginning of the spring period, its concentration is 10−12 mg/dm3, or 75–90% saturation; in the second half of spring and autumn, the oxygen content is uniform in depth and fluctuates in the range of 60−90% saturation, reaching 100% at the end of the spring period. On some calm and hot days, its concentration in the surface layer increases to 13–15 mg/dm3 (up to 160% saturation). In winter, from December to the end of March, oxygen deficiency is observed in the bottom horizons.

The total content of dissolved mineral nitrogen is 0.21 – 3.00 mg/dm3; the phosphorus content in spring in the surface horizons is 0.005 – 0.060 mg/dm3, in the bottom ones – 0.010 – 0.300 mg/dm3. The limits of changes in total dissolved iron are 0.01–0.60 mg/dm3.

Seasonal changes in the concentration of organic matter are associated with the entry of flood waters into the reservoir in the spring and the photosynthetic activity of phytoplankton in the summer-autumn period. There are two maximums in the content of dissolved organic matter in the reservoir - at the end of April - May and at the end of June - July. The range of changes in permanganate oxidation is 2.7–9.6 mgO2/dm3, dichromate oxidability is 12–50 mgO2/dm3.

The content of petroleum products in water exceeds the maximum permissible concentrations (MPC) established for fishery reservoirs by 6–24 times, and phenols by 2–4 times. Concentrations of manganese can reach 44 MPCfish, copper - 8-18 MPCfish, aluminum - 13 MPCfish, zinc - 3-5 MPCfish.

More than 120 taxa of algae were recorded in the reservoir: green - 51, diatoms - 26, blue-green - 25, dinophytes - 10, golden - 6, euglena - 6, yellow-green - 2. The biomass of phytoplankton in the epilimnion during the summer varies from 15 up to 51 mg/l (wet weight)[*].

The zooplankton of the reservoir is represented by 25 species: rotifers - 5 species, copepods and cladocerans - 10 species each. The total number of zooplankton in the littoral zone ranges from 1.3 thousand specimens/m3 in water free from vegetation to 96 thousand specimens/m3 in clumps of amphibian knotweed[*].

The average benthos biomass for the growing season is 3.5–4.5 g/m2[*].

The ichthyofauna of the reservoir is represented by bream, pike perch, pike, roach, silver bream, perch, ruffe, asp, tench, burbot, etc. - a total of 30 species.
