In the Southern Urals, in the Chelyabinsk region, at the foot of the Ural Mountains, Lake Uvildy is located. Many beautiful words are said about this lake. Perhaps the most popular figurative comparison of Lake Uvildy is the pearl of the Southern Urals. People compare Uvildy to a jewel, because it is truly a gift from nature for all of us who come to the shores of this lake to relax or improve their health. And for us, for the fishermen, Uvilda is especially valuable because it contains ripus fish.

Rhipus is a fish of the salmon family, a large subspecies of the European vendace. Body length can reach up to 46 cm, and weight - up to 1.5 kg. Typically, ripus lives in the waters of the Baltic states, and it would be very interesting to know how this wonderful fish came to us on Uvildy. But, be that as it may, there is a ripus in Uvildy, and it has been living there for more than fifty years.

Every winter, we fishermen look forward to Uvildy being covered with a strong ice shell, because it is possible to effectively catch ripus on Uvildy only in winter, and only at night. It is clear that you can catch a few fish at any time, but this will only be an accidental bycatch. Or, for example, if some fisherman sets out on a dare to catch a ripus in the summer and during the day, then of course he will catch it. But if we are talking about traditional, effective fishing, then you need to catch ripus with a fishing rod in winter and at night. So I, having waited for solid ice, went to Uvildy on the night from Friday to Saturday, December 12th, to catch ripus.

The weather was simply fabulous! During the day the thermometer showed minus one, and at night it was about minus eight degrees. Atmospheric pressure is high. The wind is south, if it could be called wind at all. Somehow, the air masses moved lazily in a southerly direction. For fishing, I chose a place near Morskoy Island.

The fact is that on Uvildy there are several convenient places to come by car, safely leave it on the shore, and calmly go out on the ice to catch ripus. I'll tell you about the two most popular ones. First, this is the Brigantine base. The distance from this base to the ice fishing point is about nine hundred meters. Second, this is the Zhemchuzhina base. The distance to the fishing point from this base is about two kilometers. We remember that the guard of any of these bases needs to be given money for parking a car on the territory of the base. There are a few more places, but they are not so convenient, let them be secret places for experts, especially since all the fishermen still meet on the ice in the same places. And if a meticulous and inquisitive fisherman takes binoculars with him to the ice, he will be able to detect and mark on the map all the points for catching ripus from the ice of Lake Uvildy.

My friend and I arrived at the Zhemchuzhina base. Try to always go fishing with a group of friends. Be it winter or summer, but always in company. It's much more difficult for one. In every sense of the word. We arrived, left the car on the shore, and calmly walked to the fishing point. There is little snow on the ice, the path to the place is flat and well-trodden by fishing sleds. We set up tents and prepared gear.

When fishing for ripple, underwater lighting and an echo sounder are used. Thermal insulation material is placed at the bottom of the tent. Different. The tackle for ripus is also special, unlike any other. When fishing for ripus, I personally use a garland of short leashes with hooks. Essentially, it is a long leash to which several short leashes with hooks are attached. I make the main leash from SLR fishing line with a diameter of 0.16 mm; for short leashes I use fluorocarbon fishing line 0.16 mm. I use hooks exclusively from Owner series 50434, size No. 8. And I tie six short leashes 4 cm long, every 1m20cm. from each other. The result is a garland for the ripus. At the top of the main line of the garland I make a loop, and at the bottom I tie a lead weight weighing 2.56 grams. That's all. I advise you to knit garlands at home, and always have several spare garlands. Because anything can happen when fishing. We remember that fishing line with hooks has an increased ability to get tangled and cling to anything.

Now I am using a new innovative bait for catching ripus on Uvildy. And then, I didn’t take any bait with me at all, and no animal bait. It is useful to say here that most often fishermen take with them sand mixed with mormysh ground through a meat grinder for bait. But I didn't take anything like that. I put beads on the hooks and pieces of edible silicone, which can accumulate light and then flicker in the dark with a greenish phosphorus light. I only used underwater lighting and this attachment. While fishing, I played with the garland in every possible way and made different wiring. He teased Ripus, but for some reason Ripus did not give in. I danced this way and that, and told jokes, and sang songs, and used shamanic methods, but the ripus still didn’t bite. And suddenly at exactly 00:00 it started! I caught the first ripus exactly at midnight, can you imagine? Then this ripus began to peck at my beads on the hooks, as it began to move, I hooked it - but it didn’t hook, I either missed it or caught it. My struggle with rhipus continued until dawn.

In the end I caught twenty-one fish. There were a lot of empty bites and movements. Frankly, that night the ripus pecked indistinctly and behaved sluggishly. After every fishing trip, I always do an analysis, and this time my friend and I found an explanation for this behavior of the ripus.

Friends, the fact is that the ripus spawns in November - December. It's the beginning of December. Ripus has just spawned and is now sick. That is why he has such an inactive behavior. However, the ripus will get better soon. It will get stronger. His behavior will become active. And again, fishermen will break records after records, catching two hundred and more ripus in one fishing trip in winter, at night, from the ice of the pearl of the Southern Urals, Lake Uvildy!

Vyazovy Island

One of the islands in the lake where elms grow. The whole point is that these trees are mainly found on the western slopes of the Middle and Southern Urals, and for this area they are a curiosity. There are none on the shores of the lake either. How the elms got to the island remains a mystery.

Spruce Island

Another island whose flora differs from the flora of the area surrounding the lake. Tall, slender spruce trees up to 30 meters high grow on it. There are no such trees on the shores of the lake.

Getting to know Lake Uvildy

Lake Uvildy is of tectonic origin and was formed millions of years ago at the site of a fault in the earth’s crust. The name of the lake comes from the Bashkir “welde”, which means “failure”, “depression”, “deepening”. Sources from the 18th century also mention other variants of the name: Uveldi, Uveldi, Uvelgi, Weldy.

Despite the fact that Uvildy is a closed lake with little water exchange, the water in it is very clean and clear. In the 19th century they wrote about this lake that at a depth of several fathoms you could see every stone. In the Chelyabinsk region, only lakes Turgoyak and Bolshoy Kisegach can boast of such cleanliness; in the rest, the water is muddy. In Uvildy there are even crayfish that live only in clean waters.

Uvildy was not always a closed lake. In 1975, when the Urals suffered from drought, it saved Chelyabinsk. A canal was dug connecting the lake and the Argazin reservoir. The water in the lake dropped by 4 meters. It took the lake more than three decades to reach its previous level. There are about 70 islands on Uvildy, each of which has its own name and history. On about. Vyazovoy, for example, grows elms, rare trees for the Urals in general, but in the vicinity of the lake there are none at all. According to legend, the largest island of Golodai gave shelter to fishermen during a long storm. The smaller the islands, the more interesting names they have: Apiary, Crane Islands, Cave of Love, Island of Suffering.

Whitefish are also caught in the lake, but usually in the daytime and not noticeably less often than ripus.

• How to get there: from Yekaterinburg you should go in the direction of Chelyabinsk. After Tyubuk, you need to turn onto Kasli and continue moving past the mentioned city, as well as past Kyshtym, after some time after which - in front of the village of Kosoy Most there will be a turnoff to the village of Taiginka (left), in which you will need to turn right - to Uvildy. From Uvildy the road goes along the eastern coast of the lake - through the villages of Saima and Uvildy (Argayash district), then the road branches. If you turn right, you can continue along the southern coast.

• Distance from Chelyabinsk: 86 km.

• How to get there: from Chelyabinsk you should go in the direction of Yekaterinburg along the Sverdlovsk Highway. At the junction near Dolgoderevensky, you need to turn towards Argayash and then move along the main direction to this settlement, where at the first junction you should turn left. Next there will be a fork where you should turn right. After a while there will be the village of Kuznetskoye, followed by Uvildy.

How to get there?

The lake is located in the Chelyabinsk region, about 90 km from the city and almost 200 from Yekaterinburg. If you are coming from Chelyabinsk, you can use the following route:

1. 
   By car. Your route will take you along the M-5 highway towards Yekaterinburg. Follow these guidelines:

   drive past the village of Ishalino;
2. turn to the village of Argayash;
3. as soon as you see a large fork, turn left;
4. then follow until the turn to the village of Kuznetskoye;
5. after passing the village, go straight at the big fork;
6. drive through the city of Kyshtym;
7. The last landmark is a gas station, from it no more than 20 km to the lake.

On average, the journey will take a little more than an hour, unless on weekends, when the highway is overloaded with cars, you will have to stand in a traffic jam for 2, or even 3 hours.

• At your own pace. Then: you can take bus number 670/2, which goes directly to the Uvildy sanatorium. Drive 2 hours;
• if you want to go straight to Raduga, your bus number is 692;
• if you want to get to “Red Stone”, then – 524.

If your route lies from Yekaterinburg, then adhere to the following rules:

1. By car. Then:
   drive along M-5 to the village of Tubuk;
2. follow the sign for Kasli;
3. then take to the village of Kuznetskoye;
4. Having passed the village, go straight at a large fork;
5. you will pass the city of Kyshtym;
6. The last landmark is a gas station, from it no more than 20 km to the lake.

The journey will take on average 2 hours, unless on weekends, when you can stand in traffic jams for more than two hours.
