Lake Teletskoye is a deep reservoir, second only to Lake Baikal, located in Altai. This is a fun and interesting place to fish for lake and river fish. It appeared as a result of the activity of the earth's crust, which underwent changes under the influence of natural processes in nature.
Our article provides detailed information regarding fishing on Lake Teletskoye in the summer, what climatic weather conditions are in the mountainous Altai Territory, the most popular recreation centers and prices for accommodation.
Climate and nature of the Altai Territory
The climate on the lake is continental, temperatures vary greatly in the north and south. In the southern part there is frequent precipitation. In the north, the weather is always cool but dry, up to +5 degrees. The latitudinal part of the lake is covered with ice in winter, but the water is quite clear with visibility of the reservoir depth up to 6 m.
In the off-season, in spring and autumn, there are frequent winds on the lake, sometimes so strong that in the surf areas navigation fails and it is difficult for people from boats to land on shore. Lake Teletskoye is 78 km long, with a picturesque border of the Shapshalsky and Abakansky ridges.
Popular places for recreation: the Iolo and Korbu ridges. The climate regime on the southern shore of the lake is simply unique. The weather is changeable up to 4 times a day.
The Chulyshman reservoir is considered the largest tributary of the Teletskoye; there are more than 300 small rivers and lakes around it. The mountains and slopes are beautiful and attractive. The Korbu waterfall is very beautiful, nature, untouched by humanity, is imaginative. Many legends are associated with these places.
Visitors can visit other picturesque places: Big Shaltan, Choodor, Ayu-Kerpes, Forty Sins, Big Chili waterfalls.
Altai is a mountainous area, and the flora is simply huge. The mountains on the slopes from the south of the lake are covered with larch forests; the east is simply replete with pine, birch and cedar forests. In the west, near the shore, there is a dark coniferous taiga with fir, cedar, and larch growing.
Right in the taiga there is a nature reserve inhabited by wolves, lynxes, wolverines, bears, weasels, and rare sables. Closer to the water there are minks and otters. The Altai badger can be found everywhere.
The right bank of Lake Teletskoye is known for the Yailyu Nature Reserve, surrounded by high rocky mountains. You can only get to it by lake; there is no land road. The reserve's workers live right in these amazing places.
Teletsky dace
The Taurus dace is a member of the carp family. Locals mistakenly call it chebak.
Here's what you need to know: Granular bait for fishing
An adult dace reaches a body length of up to 23 centimeters, weighing up to 200 grams or more. The body is covered with silvery scales of a darkish color.
The dace has a semi-lower mouth and feeds near the bottom on the larvae of the mosquito mosquito (bloodworm) and other insects, as well as diatoms. During the period of mass emergence of mosquitoes, mayflies, or in cases when insects are washed away from coastal bushes by rain and wind and blown into the water, the dace feeds on them, rising to the upper layers of the water.
Dace is a schooling fish and does not make large movements. As a rule, in the morning dace go out to the nearest rift, and in the evening they descend into holes or into deeper places under the shore.
Sometimes they accumulate on the spawning grounds of other fish and eat the eggs they lay. Dace has no commercial significance.
But catching it with a fishing rod is of some sporting interest. Despite the abundance of dace, catching it is not so easy.
Dace is a fast and agile fish. The dace bite is quite sharp, and you need to hook it sharply, and not sweepingly.
Fishing for dace is quite a gambling activity. The dace in Lake Teletskoye is found mainly in the southern part of the lake and only for a short time passes to the source of the Biya River.
Spawning in May, June. The main habitat is Kyga Bay.
For the winter, the dace enters the Chulyshman River, where, clinging to the ground, it spends the winter without feeding.
The road is not so easy. It is worth remembering that it is located in a protected area and therefore it is sometimes impossible to get there by direct flight.
A trip to Lake Teletskoye is an exciting event in itself. There are different ways to get there: by bus, by car, by plane and even by boat.
It is more convenient to go to the village of Artybash, which is why most of the tourist centers and campsites are concentrated here. In the summer, there is direct delivery to this locality by bus from the cities of Barnaul and Novosibirsk.
In the warm season, the question of how to get to Lake Teletskoye is not so pressing. It is more difficult, of course, in winter.
And here's what you need to know: Fishing in Crimea. Sea fishing in Crimea. Fishing in the lakes of Crimea
But even here there is a very simple way out. You can get to Lake Teletskoye by car.
At the same time, traveling through picturesque places with the opportunity to make short stops should only cause genuine delight.
Tashtagol road
This route, which can be used to get to Lake Teletskoye, contains two sections. First, they travel from Tashtagol to Turochak, covering 90 km of road, which is operated by the Altai and Kemerovo road services.
Next comes the Turochak – Artybash section with a length of 70 km. The final destination is located on the shore, where tourists can find many bases, estates and other places where they can comfortably stay. The road is paved and more landscaped than the previous section.
Features of fishing on Lake Teletskoye by fishing season
On the lake, only the left bank is allowed for fishing; on the right, the Altai Nature Reserve is located and fishing is not allowed there. Fishing is also prohibited for large taimen up to 2 meters in length. When caught, you must immediately release them back.
Fishing in each season is interesting in its own way:
- In the summer, they mainly catch giant lenok, local whitefish weighing up to 300 grams, burbot up to 6 kg, pike up to 10 kg, grayling with fly fishing up to 800 grams. It is grayling that are most common on the lake; they go for worms, flies, and insects. Fishing for dace is successful with a float rod. Civilized fishing spots with developed infrastructure are located in the north of the reservoir, not far from the village of Artybash. In the south, tourists mostly fish for free, set up tents, and make fires.
- In winter, the reservoir is covered with ice, but only in its northern part. In the south it is deep and almost does not freeze. The ice in winter is thin and transparent. The water is clear, the bottom is visible. Closer to December, fishermen begin to arrive for winter fishing for pike and perch. They bring with them spinners, balancers, and jigs. Silver burbots, which are good for live bait, are caught using bait with imitation fry. Minnows and ruffes are suitable for bait. But burbots do not look at sluggish fish, so the bait must be extremely fresh. Burbot goes well on girders when they are installed in familiar places previously used by fishermen. To combine business with pleasure and immediately go fishing and relax, it is better to come to the reservoir in late July early August, when the water in the reservoir is +20°C.
- In spring and autumn it is quite cold, the water temperature does not exceed +16°C. Nevertheless, fishing enthusiasts also come at this time. Knowing the habits and manners of a particular subspecies of fish, you can fish throughout the year.
What kind of fish can you catch?
There are more than ten species of fish in Lake Teletskoye. The main representatives of the ichthyofauna of this reservoir include: taimen;
- teletsky whitefish;
- whitefish Pravdina;
- grayling;
- lenok (usk);
- burbot;
- dace;
- pike;
- perch;
- bream.
It should be noted that due to uncontrolled fishing at the end of the last century, the taimen population in Teletskoye has greatly decreased. Today there is very little of this fish left in the lake, so in order to restore its numbers, local authorities decided to include this predator in the Red Book.
On a note! The population of such an endemic as the Pravdina whitefish is also on the verge of extinction. If this fish is accidentally caught, it should be immediately returned to its native element.
Taimen
Taimen - this representative of the salmon family is the largest predator of Lake Teletskoye. In this reservoir, specimens over 1.5 m long and weighing about 50 kg have been caught. It lives throughout the entire water area, but its main hunting grounds are located at the confluence of the Chulyshman River, as well as in the deep-water bays of Kyga and Kamga.
This predator spawns in numerous lake tributaries. The largest spawning grounds are located on the rivers:
- Cauldor;
- Kamga;
- Chulyshman;
- Kyga.
Only lucky fishermen can boast of catching taimen on Teletskoye.
Fishing for taimen is permitted only on a catch-and-release basis. A fisherman who violates this rule can expect a considerable fine.
Sigi
Teletsky whitefish also belongs to the salmon breed and is endemic to this reservoir. Its population in the lake is quite large. The weight of an adult individual can reach 3 kg, with a maximum length of 50 cm. The geometry of the body and silvery scales give it an external resemblance to a herring. This fish spawns in late autumn, when the water temperature reaches 6–8 degrees. Before the start of spawning, the main population of whitefish gathers in Kamginsky Bay, where they can shelter from strong autumn winds.
Fishing on Teletskoye will be more successful if you have a boat with a motor.
Whitefish Pravdina is a poorly studied species. Ichthyologists have not yet established where it came from in the lake. This breed lives at great depths and lives in small flocks. Accumulations of this endemic can only be observed at the end of summer on the Biya River, when it forms pre-spawning groups. Its diet is based on zooplankton.
Grayling
The bulk of lake grayling adheres to areas where rivers flow into the reservoir. The water flow always carries animal food with it and saturates the environment with oxygen, which is very important for this species. In Teletskoye this fish feeds on:
- gammarus crustaceans;
- larvae of various insects;
- fry of carp breeds.
The diet also contains ants, grasshoppers and other insects that accidentally fell into the river. On Teletskoye, grayling begins to spawn in late spring, when the water temperature reaches 10 degrees.
Interesting! After spawning, the grayling rolls back into the lake and displays increased feeding activity for several days.
What types of fish can you find
The reservoir abounds in various fish and rare subspecies. Some fishermen manage to catch taimen using spinning rods. This giant requires trolling, strong tackle and submerged wobblers.
In the summer season you can fish both with spinning and fly fishing. You can come across hefty grayling trophies closer to the river mouths. Earthworms, flies, and live insects are suitable for bait. The donka and fishing rod come across special trophies - lenka, the taste of which is even better than that of taimen.
There are a lot of whitefish in the pond. Local residents compare it to a herring, similar in appearance. To catch whitefish you need a spinning rod, for bait - wobblers, vibrotails, twisters.
It's exciting to catch dace in a pond. There is a lot of it on the south coast. It is better to fish with a light float rod.
The shoreline on the lake is special, so fishing is only effective from a boat. Dace is well caught by fly fishing using maggots, worms, and insects during periods of their mass emergence. With the arrival of autumn, pike, perch on spinning rods and silicone baits begin to bite.
Seasonal fishing features
The success of fishing on Lake Teletskoye largely depends on the time of year chosen for fishing. It should be taken into account that each species of fish living in this reservoir exhibits increased activity during certain periods.
Spring
Spring is the best time for fishing for pike and dace. In the first half of May, the toothy fish finishes spawning and readily bites on all kinds of artificial baits. At this time, predator fishing takes place in shallow water areas where the depth does not exceed 3 m.
In May, dace is actively caught using float gear in the coastal zone. The most universal baits for catching it are considered to be dung worms and maggots.
On a note! Closer to mid-May, lenok spawning ends. After spawning, the predator rolls into the lake and begins to feed heavily. At this time, it is better to catch it with rotating spoons No. 2-3.
Summer
Summer is the most suitable season to visit Lake Teletskoye. During this period, there is increased activity of most representatives of the ichthyofauna. In June, an angler can count on catching taimen, which have already spawned and are trying to restore vitality through active feeding.
Memories of the pristine beauty of the local nature remain in the fisherman’s memory for a long time.
In summer, Telets whitefish bite well here. A school of this fish is easy to spot by its characteristic circles on the water. To catch it, a match rod is used, which allows you to cast the rig far. This is often necessary since whitefish tend to feed at a considerable distance from the shore. A worm is usually used as bait.
In August, bream fishing begins to be good. For successful fishing, the bait must be cast to a depth of at least 7 m. In shallower areas, you can only count on bites from medium-sized bream. Local fishermen fish for bream with onboard gear from a boat. Visitors usually use feeder tackle.
Autumn
In autumn, large perch are excellently caught using spinning rods. To catch it, you should use jig baits. Since fishing takes place at depths of about 6 m, the weight of the head should be at least 15 grams. When a school of predator is discovered, 20–30 large fish can be caught from one place. In September, grayling begins to show increased activity. At this time, he prefers to bite on small wobblers and spinners.
On a note! Since the water in Teletskoye is very clear, the bait must be cast as far as possible from the shore, where the fish are less shy. The sbirulino tackle is excellent for these purposes.
Winter
Throughout the winter, perch fishing is good in the coastal zone. To catch it, vertical spoons and balancers are often used. Often, when fishing for stripers, grayling sits on artificial bait.
On the first ice, the girders catch large pike. In areas with depths of 10–15 m, bream bite on a winter float rod. Starting from mid-February, burbot is caught on the supply shelves. After melt water begins to flow under the ice, all the inhabitants of the lake become active.
Due to the high quality of water, the fish of Lake Teletskoye have excellent taste and can be prepared in any form. By visiting this reservoir, you can not only have excellent fishing, but also enjoy the unique beauty of these places.

Reviews from tourists
- Grigory, 28 years old: “I’ve been to the Golden Lake base on Teletskoye. The territory is large and well-groomed, but there are many old buildings in the area that resemble a pioneer camp. A wide range of excursions are offered: walking, boat trips, a heated swimming pool (but for a fee), discos. The infrastructure and interior of the rooms leave much to be desired. Everything is old, decaying, the doors are creaking. And there is a lot of garbage near the hotel. It would be better to rent a room in a cottage or a suite, I recommend it’s quieter.”
- Mikhail, 38 years old: “I liked everything about the Old Castle.” I was once, but I want to come back again. I traveled around the lake, was in the village of Artybash, and found a good guide. The base resembles an ancient castle with a stone fence and turrets. I rented a room in economy class, the room was tidy, the walls were lined with wood. But there is only one toilet for the entire floor, although there are not many people, it is calm. I paid 1200 per night for a double room, the price includes parking, I arrived in my own car. The food in the dining room was delicious. I wasn't looking for any cons. I enjoyed fishing. I liked everything. I consider the base “Old Castle” to be the best on Lake Teletskoye.”

Teletsky whitefish
Belongs to the salmon family. Locals call it herring, but, unlike herrings, the Telets whitefish has an adipose fin, which is typical of salmon. This is the most numerous fish in the lake. Its weight reaches three kilograms, with a body length of up to 50 centimeters or more, covered with silvery scales. In November 1940, residents of the village of Yailyu P.V. Chirsov and GA. Gureyev was caught under a sawn-off shotgun at the mouth of the Chechenek River, a whitefish 52 centimeters long, weighing 2 kg 800 grams. In the summer, when the top layer of water warms up to 14-17 degrees, whitefish swim across the entire surface of the lake, collecting insects that have fallen on the water. Light splashes are visible throughout. Taimen rushes behind it, and sometimes you can watch how these large fish, carried away in pursuit, plow the surface of the lake with their powerful reddish fins. Spawning in October, November. Before spawning, whitefish form large aggregations. Whitefish are especially abundant in Kamginsky Bay and other places where it is much calmer during autumn storms.
