There are at least 60 species of fish in local reservoirs. The species composition depends on the region (north, south) and on the size of the lake: the larger it is, the more fish are found.
The largest lake in Karelia, Ladoga, is of greatest interest to avid fishermen. The surface of the reservoir includes more than 500 rocky islands, which can be reached both by boat and by wade. This feature of Ladoga makes fishing more attractive and richer in catch.
Fishing here is possible all year round. The lake almost never freezes up to the middle, and the water, containing almost 100% dissolved oxygen, guarantees an active bite. You can catch: salmon, vendace, trout, palia, raw fish, roach, ide, smelt, pike perch and other fish.
Lake Ladoga has an area of about 18 thousand km², it is not surprising that in such a large area fishermen have identified their own special, popular fishing spots:
Staraya Ladoga Canal (it’s better to fish on a motor boat, since the shore is completely covered with thickets)
Novoladozhsky Canal (the most popular place for fishing from the shore, accessible by car)
Skerries of Lake Ladoga (the skerries can only be reached by transport in winter, in summer - by boat. Shallow backwaters attract fishermen from all over Karelia)
Zagubskaya Bay (there is no direct access to the lake, but a boat can be launched through the Novo-Svirsky Canal and then reached the lip)
In addition to the large Karelian lake, of interest are:
• Tikshozero.
Located in Loukhsky district. Here they catch vendace, whitefish, brown trout, sculpin, perch, roach, pike, burbot, smelt, ide;
• Pyalozero.
Located in the Kondopoga district. Pike, perch, ruffe, vendace, roach, burbot, and bream are caught in the reservoir;
• Kukas.
This is a lake in the Louhi region, surrounded by mountains. In its waters you can find whitefish, smelt, vendace, and grayling;
• Ondozero.
It is located in two districts of Karelia – Muezersky and Segezhsky. Here they catch grayling, roach, ruffe, dace, bream, burbot, minnow, stickleback, vendace, whitefish, perch;
Located in the Pryazhinsky district. There are 16 species of fish in the reservoir: roach, perch, vendace, pike perch, whitefish, bleak, ruffe, dace, burbot, ide, bream, etc.;
• Nuke.
Located in the northwest of the region. Fishermen come to the lake for pike, roach, whitefish, vendace, perch, bream, ruff, and burbot.

Features of winter fishing in Karelia
Not every amateur fisherman comes to fish in Karelia in winter - this is an extreme sport. At this time of year, you need to dress as warmly as possible when going to the pond. Fishing in the region begins in December, when ice appears on the lakes and rivers and the fish adapt to cold water.
The main advantage of Karelian winter fishing is the opportunity to get to places in water bodies that are inaccessible in summer. You should be as careful as possible near snags and in places where reeds grow - here the ice is less durable.
Bait and tackle
In winter, fish in Karelian reservoirs are caught using donks, girders, and winter fishing rods. For bait use:
maggot;
bloodworm;
live bait;
worm;
jig;
balance;
spinner.
Winter is a good time to catch burbot, which hibernates in the summer. Burbot is a rare fish; it is not found in muddy and dirty water. For this reason it is called an “indicator” of the cleanliness of a reservoir. In addition to burbot, pike, whitefish, perch, roach, and grayling are caught in Karelia in winter.
"Forest Lake"
When considering fishing bases on the lakes of Karelia, you cannot ignore this comfortable place. You can live on the territory of the base either in a comfortable house or in a tent. The cottages are located almost right next to the water. Inside the Forest Lake complex there is a real Russian bathhouse and a guest house.
In addition to fishing, guests are offered a lot of other leisure activities: boating, table tennis, bicycles, billiards. If fishermen come here in winter, you can rent snowmobiles, skates, and skis. In summer, in addition to fishing, you can go to the forest to pick mushrooms and berries. There is also an excellent cafe on site. The car can be left in a guarded parking lot. Guests are offered three two-room cottages, as well as a guest house with 2-4 bed rooms.
The base is located in the Olonetsky district on the shore of the island. Vagvozero.
How much does winter fishing cost?
In private sectors, fishing is paid, here you can rent equipment and fishing rods . The cost of living at a recreation center averages 2 thousand rubles per day per person. To travel around Lake Ladoga you need a snowmobile. The rental price starts from 2500 rubles.
Where to go fishing in Karelia in winter?

Ladoga lake. More than 50 species of fish live here. The desired “guests” of the fisherman will be rudd, Ladoga slingshot, pike, and catfish. In the shallow southern part, pike perch are caught.
Vodlozero is a lake in the Pudozh region of Karelia. Winter fishing here lasts from November to May. About 20 species of fish are caught here: ide, pike perch, bream, vendace, perch, etc.
Features of summer fishing in Karelia
In summer, boats and boats are used for fishing in Karelia. A motorized watercraft is an opportunity to get to a fishing spot on a lake that is impossible to get to along the shore. Since strong winds blow in the region even in summer and there are waves on large lakes, it is necessary to take life jackets with you on the boat.
In hot weather, the fish bite worse, so ideal fishing in Karelia occurs in August. It is in this month that you can catch large predatory fish.
IMPORTANT: in Karelia there is a spawning ban for each reservoir at a certain time. Before fishing, you need to clarify its terms in order to avoid an administrative fine (from 2 to 5 thousand rubles) and not lose your boat and gear.
Bait and tackle
In summer, the bite is better on worms, maggots and live bait. To do this, anglers use spinning, trolling, float rods, fly fishing (grayling and trout are best), girdles, and sbirulino.
Equipment and bait are used to catch the following types of fish in the summer:
salmon; Body length up to 2 meters. Weight – up to 70 kg.
burbot; Body length up to 120 cm. Weight – up to 18 kg.
pike; Body length up to 150 cm. Weight – 35 kg (average weight 8 kg)
