But then some familiar men arrived and said that they had been to the Tsimlyansk reservoir and caught a bunch of Tsimlyansk roach and bream. Moreover, roaches are caught up to 400 grams. I once caught large under-ice roach (roach) in Kostroma, so I knew that it can be quite commercial in size and dried in no way inferior to ram and roach. We quickly went to Wikipedia and read that the Tsimlyansk Reservoir was formed artificially during the construction of a hydroelectric power station on the Don River and stretches for hundreds of kilometers. We found a website of local aborigines, read how they pull bags of fish from the ice, and we started drooling and in one place the well-known itch appeared. The main thing is to make a decision to travel, and then life turns upside down, everything is subject to packing and preparation. And no matter how much time is left before departure - a day or a week, one obsessive thought is constantly pounding in my head that sooner or later the weekend will come, and nothing will hold us back. And frosts at night press down to -25-28⁰С, and the wind is fierce up to 12 m/sec. But is this a reason not to go fishing? Tsimla is only 450 km from us. one way, but can this affect the decision made? And now the long-awaited Friday has arrived. A new winter tent, tiles, and gas cylinders were specially purchased. The freshest bloodworms and maggots are moving merrily in the refrigerator, lungs and udders have long been purchased and frozen, millet porridge has been boiled and a bunch of bait has been prepared for bait. I don’t even want to talk about the gear - solid fluorocarbon, and some incredibly expensive jigs made of superalloyed alloys. In general, you already understand that the fish simply cannot avoid catching all this, and there are no more reasons that can interfere with this fishing. The hardest thing left is to fall asleep on the eve of departure. Departure is scheduled for 4.00, you go to bed at 22.00 and then toss and turn until 00.00, again and again in your inflamed mind, how you drag one hefty sorogee one after another. Finally you fall into oblivion, and the alarm clock immediately rings. You no longer understand whether you were asleep or not, but the hour “X” has struck, and the time has come for active actions in reality, and not in dreams. A quick breakfast, the car loads in 10 minutes, it’s only -18⁰C outside, there’s no wind, in general, life is good, and the heart is clearly beating loudly in anticipation of a miracle. I pick up a friend and go ahead. The Stavropol Territory, the Krasnodar Territory, the Rostov Region quickly flashes by in the night, and now we are entering the Volgograd Region and there is only an hour left to reach our destination. In general, when you move towards your cherished goal, the road flies by absolutely unnoticed. We were traveling to these places for the first time, and were afraid to turn somewhere on the wrong road. But the closer we came to our cherished goal, the more and more people who were sick just like us began to appear. Finally, we just stupidly lined up in a single row of cars with twin drivers with idiotic grimaces of absolute happiness on their faces. The asphalt smoothly turned into a fairly well-rolled winter dirt road, and after a short wander through several coastal villages, we suddenly had a view of an endless expanse of water covered with ice and snow crust. All the cars boldly drove onto the ice and moved in the direction of the tent city visible ahead. The town, to put it mildly, is a real Las Vegas, with its own life and schedule. Moreover, it stands on the ice from the first to the last day of ice, and the sickest people begin to be taken from there on hovercraft, because all the paths to the shore are already cut off by water. This city is not permanent, some come, others leave, but if you take a census, the total number of residents will be approximately the same at any time. We involuntarily looked at each other and congratulated each other on our arrival, but in our hearts we thought that there were two more idiots in Las Vegas.

I'm not a fan of crowds, so we decided that we would stay away from the main camp. We chose a place a little further to the sea from a group of four lonely tents. Frost - 23, almost no wind. In general, the weather is fabulous for these places. We drilled, set up tents, and fed holes. Ice 45-50 centimeters. I began to unwind the first fishing rod and discovered that the depth to the ice was only 20 centimeters. Doubt immediately struck me, but I decided to wait a little. We courageously sat for half an hour - the result was complete “...oops.” Decide to check how your neighbors are doing. I approached the neighbors; they had just crawled out of their tents and were sitting down at a makeshift table made from a box. He came up, said hello, and found out how things were going. They were fishing at 7.00 and had already caught several kilograms, but their tongues were suspiciously tongue-tied for quite an early time. I asked about the depth, they said it was about 2 meters, although they are more careful than us. To my uncomprehending glance, one answered that we stood right on the spit, that’s why there was no one there, because the depth was knee-deep for a sparrow. Another invited them to join their company and be neighbors. We didn’t take much persuasion, broke up camp and quickly moved closer to new friends. Drilled again.

I immediately measured the depth, indeed much deeper than we had. We fed and set up tents. In short, we really lost 2 hours of precious time. But nothing, the first damn thing is lumpy. I sat down in the tent and set up two fishing rods with 2 jigs each. I strung one with bloodworms, the other with maggots. Cool, the tent is warm and quiet, very cozy and relatively spacious - I didn’t skimp on the tent. And here is the first bite. I saw her in my dreams for so long, and everything happened so unexpectedly. The nod swayed slightly, froze and twitched violently. The hook is hooked, and the first well-fed roach struggles on the ice. I had just started re-stringing the bloodworm when the second fishing rod started working. Hook, and immediately two measured eggs crawled out of the hole, shimmering with silver against the background of bright orange fins. I quickly lowered the first fishing rod and, before I could put it on the stand, I felt a sharp bite in my hand. Undercut and strong resistance at the other end. He lifted it smoothly, and a 200 gram beauty came out of the hole. Well, it’s sooooo nice, damn it. It became clear that the second fishing rod was superfluous at this celebration of life. The bite hit like a machine gun, probably like the Black Stones had in the famous comedy. Believe me, there was no time to raise a glass. But the neighbors seemed to have given up on fishing and were drinking on the ice under the rising sun.

In any case, they became more and more active, and talked incessantly about past fishing trips. Soon they started talking about women - everyone knows what stage this is. About 2 hours passed in the monotonous lowering of the fishing rod and once or twice or three times pulling out a well-fed sorog or doublet. Ananism with bloodworms and oparium was stopped. The lungs and udders, cut into small pieces at home, were hung on hooks. For this snack, measured sorog was hung and small things were excluded. And now the long-awaited moment has come. The bite stopped. At the next lowering, the nod froze above the hole. This was a signal to action. They quickly set up an impromptu table on a box, and boiled water on the stove for noodles and tea. Another portion of bait was poured into the holes - it was a mistake. They had just poured a glass when the nod started jumping merrily on the fishing rod. Not paying attention, they rolled in for successful fishing. The line on the fishing rod tightened, and the fishing rod began to bend towards the hole. I no longer had the strength to look at this mockery. I had to lift the doublet of plump mothers into the light of day and put the fishing rod aside. Having had a quick lunch, we ran to the tents. The holiday continued...

When the bite began to subside, you simply threw a piece of bait into the hole, and everything continued with renewed vigor. The fish was placed in an “orphan” sugar bag. This continued until 17.00. The bite stopped as suddenly as it started. We were incredibly happy about this, and climbed out of the tents into the light of day, bent into the pose of “running Egyptians.” Having kneaded the bones, we quickly served dinner. The frost began to get stronger, and measured snoring was heard from the neighboring tents. In general, everyone got what they wanted from fishing. We arrived overnight and had high hopes for the night. We read on the forum that hardware and bream are suitable at night. The frost began to oppress. After dinner, we again took our places in the tents and lit the stoves for warming. The breeze picked up, and it became completely uncomfortable outside, but inside the tent it was warm and cozy. After sitting until 10 p.m. and catching a couple of hand-sized white-legged breams, we decided to stop tempting fate. I started the car, and half an hour later we settled down comfortably for the night. This is where the movement began among our neighbors. They froze in their tents, woke up, and climbed out. The weather outside did not inspire optimism in them, and they asked us to look behind their tents, while they themselves moved in their Niva to the village for booze. We promised to guard their tents as if we were our own and immediately fell asleep. We woke up at 6.30 am. It's a complete mess on the street. Wind, frost and fine prickly snow. The decision was made quickly. We didn’t need any more fish, and we didn’t want to stay on the ice in this weather. We quickly got ready and set off. We moved along the bay in the dark with high beams, and a continuous line of shifters of Las Vegas residents called “Tsimla” was moving towards the meeting.

From this place you can quickly get to any fishing spot in the reservoir by motor boat. Agree that the most valuable thing when fishing is time. Also, the convenient location of the base allows you to significantly save on gasoline when using a boat with a motor. In winter, you won’t have to walk tens of kilometers on ice to the middle of the reservoir. The only drawback of this base is that there is no electricity. But don’t be afraid, all lighting and electrical appliances are powered by batteries. So you won't notice much of a difference.

When to come?

You can fish in the reservoir in any weather - the fish always bite. But it is better to fish on quiet, windless days. Peak fishing occurs at the end of summer - beginning of autumn. It is at this time that fishermen flock here from all over Russia. Autumn here is warm and not rainy, not hot, and mosquitoes and midges do not bite. In winter they mostly come for the first ice. (28.09 – 02.10.09) Annual trips to Akhtuba for almost the last 10 years have somewhat lost their attractiveness and thrill.
It didn't take long to search the Internet for new places. And here we are visiting the Don! The first thing that struck me was the abundance of water and reeds, behind which one could guess numerous lakes and islands. And with what delight you see the huge tankers and barges sailing along the fairway! The hospitality and attentiveness of the host is also worth a lot! It was the huntsman’s tips on equipping gear and promising fishing spots that led us to stunning success. These include pike weighing 2 or more kg (the largest weighs 4,200), perch weighing 600-800 g, and decent pike perch. After all, October is the month of the predator. We didn’t catch much whitefish, but we managed to salt it. Many thanks to Natalia for the delicious, homemade food. Three meals a day, organized at the base, completely freed us from the need to prepare food and significantly increased our time on the water. What else do you need while fishing! After 4 years of autumn holidays on Akhtuba in the Kharabalei region, we decided to go to the Tsimlyanskoye reservoir at the base “U Fedor” and did not regret it.
The fishing was varied, interesting and productive. The main object of fishing is commercial pike perch 0.5-1.5 kg per jig and vertical lure when rafting. We devoted a couple of days to trolling (pike, perch); in two hours we caught a bucket of excellent leucorrhoea (bream, roach) with an average weight of 200-250g. Of the trophies, it should be noted that there were absolutely fantastic perches, three of which exceeded the kilogram mark!!! Moreover, we did not specifically catch perch. Our successes were determined both by the richness of the reservoir and by the excellent professional qualities of our huntsman-instructor. Among the “unsolved” fishing problems, I would like to mention pike fishing in floods, where it was very difficult to get due to the extremely low water level. Our neighbors brought from there 50-60 kg of medium-sized pike and perch in half a day using elastic bands. We also failed to find the key to the large and very numerous local bream, which sometimes attacked jig baits and even turned purple, but could be caught with a worm, maggot, etc. refused categorically. The base is located very well, excellent places for catching predators and whitefish are located directly opposite the base, 80-100 meters from the shore, and at a distance of 2-3 km there are several more excellent places. A boat (at least a rubber one) is required, because... It is difficult to reach significant depths from the shore. The huge number of nets in the most catchy places is upsetting. They catch everyone with nets, from legal gangs to local and visiting poachers. Two words about the base. It is under construction, but the owners are doing everything possible for a great vacation, and the dinners that the hostess prepares taking into account the wishes of vacationers are simply delicious. In terms of price-quality ratio, this is the best we know. We will definitely return next year to catch pike perch and trophy perch, and also finally get to grips with pike and bream. Vitaly, Jean.
