Vetluga River, types of fish, map, and fishing methods
Vetluga is one of the most beautiful rivers in Russia, the banks of which are home to several urban-type settlements and two cities. The beauty here helps visitors from big cities forget about the hustle and bustle and problems and completely surrender to nature. For fishing lovers, you cannot find a better place. Fishing on Vetluga is an activity not only for local old-timers, but also for young people who often come to relax, barbecue and do a little fishing in the modest company of friends and relatives.

Types of fish. These places are ideal for a predator. There are a lot of perch and young pike in the snags, which prowl in search of food. In addition, there are: pike perch, catfish, burbot, asp. Of the cyprinids, ide, bream, bluefish, and roach live in the river. This diversity is facilitated by brownish water with the presence of humic substances.
Seasonality of fishing. You can catch fish at any time of the year, the main thing is to know what to fish for. Amateur fishing on Vetluga begins in the spring, when the ice begins to melt. A bottom fishing rod is best suited. A worm is used for bait. At this time, burbot and sabrefish are most active, as well as roach fishing in the spring using brewed semolina. To prepare it you need:
1. Mix cereal with milk
2. Place the resulting porridge in a nylon bag and lower it into boiling water for a few minutes
3. The result should be a viscous porridge, ready for use in fishing.
A little later, at the beginning of summer, when the external waters recede on Vetluga, this is the best period for successful fishing; you need to take float or bottom fishing rods, and use maggots as bait. Bream catches well on bark beetles and worms. The ide is preferred by the bark beetle. Particularly large individuals are found here.
Stunning Vetluga River
Good day everyone, on September 17 the Kostroma region championship in spinning from the shore will take place on the amazing Vetluga River in the Sharya region.
I knew that she was wonderful, but unfortunately I hadn’t gotten around to it yet, and that week people who were just as sick in the head as me (in a good way) called and offered to go to training, to which, of course, I agree.
The journey from the city is 330 km one way, the road is not bad and having left at 3:15 we arrived at the reservoir at 7:15.
Wow, this is just a fairy tale, incredibly beautiful places and a miraculously meandering river.
The shallows and spits were immediately visible, as were some of the snags. We were very lucky that a local came with us, who gladly told us everything about this reservoir
And after the educational program, we realized that we had to try to catch everything. I chose rubber and settled on Grub Stick 2.85 in 3 colors, after the first casts it became clear that the edge was underfoot, the depth in the riverbed was 4 meters and there were a lot of snags, the optimal weight was 6-8 grams on an offset hook. The bites began almost immediately and the perch started biting, my comrades did not lag behind and then my comrades did not lag behind and also caught striped robbers, but due to the specifics of our competition, namely, you can bring 5 perches and 5 pikes into the competition!!
The goal was precisely the toothy one, but as luck would have it, there were only striped ones in the snags, and as quickly as they arrived, the reserves of rubber left on the snags melted at the same speed. Finally, my friend Seryoga persuaded one toothy one.
We met for a meeting and again dispersed around the area of the upcoming competition.
There are a lot of perch in the entire zone and as soon as you put a little less bait, he immediately hangs himself, and on any bait that he can theoretically swallow.
Once again, having thought through our brains, we put on very large gear and go into battle.. At least some hints of a toothy one appeared.
I caught 2 strings of half a kg each, another 1 was caught by Sergey and 1 by Oleg. After we finished fishing, the local guy Dima said that our 4 strings were a drop in the ocean and you didn’t catch them, but tortured them, a sharp change in weather was to blame for this and the real Sharya pike from 3 kg just standing under the snags, after these words there were more questions than answers. We really hope that by the 17th everything will be fine with the weather.
P.S. On the way back we stopped into the forest and picked up some whites for soup... The forest is a separate story, I won’t talk about it, I’ll just say that apparently EVERYTHING is beautiful in these places, the Rivers, the Forests, and most importantly the People! Thank you for everything Sharya, we will meet again soon!!

Fishing on the Vetluga River - video
At the very beginning of autumn, fishing on Vetluga turns into hunting for predatory pike. For this purpose, deep-water spinners are most often used in the plumb line of the boat.
Winter fishing is rich in such catches as: perch, burbot, and less often - pike perch. At this time, the perch will bite on spoons, and after a few weeks, it will be possible to catch it with a jig. The depth is approximately 4-6 meters, not far from the shore. Pike perch will be excellently caught using a spoon.
What place to choose. For maximum pleasure, you need to choose the right place where you can both live and fish. Recreation centers in the Nizhny Novgorod region have very good reviews. There is a concentrated huge number of places where you can spend an unforgettable time near the river. The most popular ones are located in the Voskresensky district, namely in Voskresensk itself. There's plenty of fishing here. Many fishermen are very pleased with their catches, especially the large specimens that they manage to catch in the local creeks and snags. In addition to the regional center itself, fishermen often fish on: • - Kladovka • - Prorva • - Yurognskoye Lake
On the Vetluga River, Yurkino village
Report on fishing on the Vetluga River, Yurkino village. Feeder and snacks. Bream "one and a half", catfish and white-eye sop. Something has changed on Vetluga...
We have been planning to go to Vetluga for a long time. We heard from one fisherman friend, then from another, that large bream are caught on Vetluga, up to two kilos or more . But the distance to those places is not close. Therefore, if you are going to go, then do it for two or three days at once. And these days cannot always be filled with work and other responsibilities. So the trip to distant lands was postponed, and fishing was more suburban.
We missed the fertile time of the summer bream run. Usually, as far as I remember, at the height of summer, large bream was caught on Vetluga, in the month of July. And then we only got out in August. But okay, I think we'll catch something. Moreover, according to a friend, one of his acquaintances catches bream in those places all the time. It releases half-kilogram white bream. That's it... And we would need something like this just to relieve our souls, and to dry and smoke fish. Bream of this size are best salted and smoked (how to smoke bream).
We packed up and left with our son Dimka in his Logan. True, it didn’t work out in the morning. It was only after lunch that I managed to get out. But they were walking mostly at one hundred and twenty, sometimes even faster. Although you won’t get much speed on the narrow Kozmodemyansk highway. Although it is a federal road, it winds and the width clearly does not meet the parameters. The fate of the reckless driver and passengers of the minibus, which accelerated along a narrow road at night and crashed into a timber truck, is evidenced by the wreaths on the side of the road. Last year there was a tragedy.
We were in Yurkino around four o'clock. We pumped up the boat and hung up the motor. Loaded things. And where does such a quantity of fishing supplies come from? It seems like there is nothing superfluous. It was possible, of course, to settle down on our shore. But Dimka went here with his wife to relax, and he really liked the sand spit on the opposite bank, where, according to him, there was a black hole immediately beyond the shallow water. And there were no people on this bank. Still, we are going to fish near the village. Along our shore, city fishermen sit with feeders, and local residents and fishermen walk.
So here we are. The braid, of course, is beautiful and the depth seems to be black. But after casting, it became clear that although it’s not shallow here, it’s not possible to get the feeder to the edge . This edge, apparently, is located closer to the steep opposite bank. No matter how hard I tried to reach it, the feeder braid went into the water in a gentle line. While this is a suitable place for relaxation, it is not so good for fishing. But let's see... There was no time to look for a new place. Moreover, nearby there was an oxbow overgrown with water lilies. Here's where to put the flyer bars (how to put the flyer bars). Would be with pike.
But catching live bait on the spit turned out to be difficult. I only came across sopa. There was no roach. And the white-eyed sopa is a weak fish on the hook of the girder. It won't last long. It was necessary to immediately go to the oxbow lake and catch roach or crucian carp there from a boat. I realized this only later. In the meantime, we were hoping for a bite from the bream. But only the sop pecked, and the only bream worth half a kilo was caught only in the dark.
For the night, we threw in several snacks with pearl barley and shells skewered with meat. For catfish. But the toss-up bell never rang.
In the morning, a small sop was still biting and I suggested moving to the opposite bank, which had a yellow sandy-clay high cliff. There was clearly a hole there. No sooner said than done. We started the engine and headed to the other side. Yes, after casting the feeder, it became clear: there was at least six meters of depth under the shore. But again there was a problem to reach the edge, but from the other side. 3.9 meter long feeder reached the border of the pit and the spit. No wonder I took it. Short homemade feeders, which worked perfectly on a small river, here did not reach the edge by some ten meters. The feeders fell into the hole.
Sopa was also biting here, only larger. In the evening, apparently, he took the little brawn onto the feeder, judging by the jerks. But I got off. And already at dusk I took another one. I took this one. At night, we had to remove the feeders altogether, because they were constantly taking catfish from the palm of our hand. They had to be taken off the hooks and thrown into the water. We haven’t come across a larger catfish.
In the morning I took a “one and a half bream” on my branded feeder , I caught several small bream, but overall I didn’t take any bream. As a local fisherman who came up on the Kazanka said, there is no bream here, as there was before, for two years now. And even the famous Sukhodol, where we initially wanted to go, was no better than this place where we were now. Something apparently has changed in Vetluga. We caught a bucket of fish, if you count the fish boiled in the ear, but sopa prevailed.
Where is the Vetluga River located and where does it flow?
The river enters the mouth of the Cheboksary reservoir. It meanders not only through the Nizhny Novgorod and Kirov lands, but also across the expanses of the Mari El Republic and the Kostroma region.
Near Kozmodemyansk (12 km higher) it flows into the Volga.
There are many sand bars, rifts and shallows on the river. Due to the fact that Vetluga is winding, the channel changes, creating oxbow lakes.
Few people know that the river got its name from a dinosaur. Yes, yes - from a dinosaur named “Wetlugosaurus”, which was dug up in the 20s of the last century.
What kind of places there are - you just can’t take your eyes off them. It is not without reason that famous artists and writers dedicated their works to this river.
These places are ideal for a predator. There are a lot of perch and young pike in the snags, which prowl in search of food. In addition, there are: pike perch, catfish, burbot, asp. Of the cyprinids, ide, bream, bluefish, and roach live in the river.
Kayakers raft here every summer. Many people like this taiga region. And how the indigenous locals love these places and their river Vetluga. Excellent outdoor recreation.
Vetluga is a serious, generous river
Many people who want to stock up on fish for future use come here from different regions of the Mari El Republic. There are fisherwomen from the Kirov and Nizhny Novgorod regions here. They make their way off-road to familiar oxbow lakes and backwaters. Iksa, Yurkino, Maryino, Lunda, Koporulikha, Podgornoye. These names evoke wonderful associations in the imagination of every knowledgeable fisherman and take your breath away. And how many little-known villages there are in Vetluga. Treasured places on the banks of the ducts. Getting there can be difficult for a newbie. There are entrances where you can only get to the water through narrow gaps among the thickets. The main thing is to launch the boat. And there, with God's help...
Someone is rowing along the channels with a spinning rod and hunting for pike. Someone on a motor is taxiing closer to the fairway, beyond the islands. On the core, catch bream using a “ring” or hunt for pike perch with a spoon. Free will. Those who want to catch adrenaline in their pants even risk setting nets along the Vetluga canals. But this illegal activity can end badly. Fines for poaching are increasing. The caught fish may turn out to be golden.
So it’s better to earn food for your family honestly, with a fishing rod, while getting great pleasure.
The Vetluga River is no longer spawning
Among them there are quite a few generational fishermen. And just now they were extremely indignant. Why is it forbidden to fish on Vetluga during the spawning ban?
The old people say that fish never entered the river to spawn. In addition, all the rivers that flow into Vetluga are not prohibited.
They are also not happy with the work of the Fishery Supervision Authority - you will never see Fishery Protection inspectors when called.
Simple, correct and real fishermen say that everyone here is tied up. That’s why poachers rule and rampage here - fish inspectors have a percentage of their catch.
All significant places are blocked with nets, and the inspectors seem to be deliberately not seeing anything. They are only too keen on fining ordinary fishermen with a float rod - the plan is on fire.
