Fishing spots and fishing techniques in the Kaluga region

The abundance of wonderful fishing spots in the Kaluga region has always attracted anglers of different generations from different cities. Every fisherman can easily find here the fish that he likes to catch, whether he is a spinner or a floater. Those who hunt for large prey should definitely visit these places, since local reservoirs are famous for their hefty inhabitants, especially catfish and pike. But those who are not going for records, but just want good fishing in beautiful picturesque places, will also be able to enjoy their holiday in these parts. In order not to run away from home anyhow and for unknown reasons, we have prepared for you a short overview of the most interesting places from a fishing point of view.

First, let's look at free reservoirs that are worth paying attention to:

Oka River

Every fisherman has heard about this river, but not everyone has had the pleasure of fishing here. But in vain, because Oka is a very popular place among fishermen. A large number of fish are found here, the main species being:

  • Chub
  • Gustera
  • Bream
  • Roach
  • Podust
  • Som
  • Zander
  • Chekhon
  • Pike
  • Ide

These are just the main inhabitants of the river; you can fish here all year round. It is not difficult to find a place for fishing on the river itself: we need pike perch - we are looking for pools, we need catfish - we are also looking for pools, dumps, and barrels. Pike are found almost everywhere. Therefore, for an experienced fisherman it will not be difficult to choose the ideal fishing spot, and a beginner will gain experience and will also be able to determine where and how to fish. By the way, you can fish both on the river itself and on its tributaries, of which there are quite a lot, only a few are listed here:

  1. Ugra
  2. Zhizdra
  3. Protva

The Ugra is a tributary of the Oka, in the Kaluga region it has a length of about 160 kilometers. Fish such as bream, pike, roach, podust are found, and pike perch, sterlet, and catfish are also found.

Zhizdra - originates in Lyudinovka, the fish caught is the same as in the Oka, burbot, rudd, ruff and perch are also found. The width of the tributary is about 50 meters, the average depth is 2 meters

Protva is the left tributary of the Oka. There is a lot of driftwood, but for a fisherman it is a paradise. The bite is the same, fishing on Protva is a pleasure, since there are many fishing spots

Features of fishing in Kaluga

Although the Kaluga region does not lead in the number of natural lakes, this does not give fishing lovers a reason to abandon such a favorite activity.

An excellent option for Kaluga fishermen will be glacial, floodplain and karst artificial reservoirs. Floodplain reservoirs - with a large surface of water, are located mainly in the basin and tributaries of the Oka River, glacial - deep. Among the largest lakes it is worth noting - Gorskoye, Tish (you can often catch rudd, perch, ruffe, roach, pike, carp), Polyanskoye, the deepest is considered Bezdon, which belongs to the glacial-karst reservoirs. In the region there are also lakes Bryn, Ogublyanka, ponds Ivakino, Mityaevskoye, Lykovo, Aleshkiny, the rivers Ugra, Desna, Zhizdra, Vorya.

More than 30 species of fish live in the reservoirs and ponds of Kaluga. And the thickness and weight of your catch depends on how you are prepared for the decisive battle of the fish kingdom. It’s no secret that winter fishing differs in its method of action from summer fishing, just as autumn fishing differs from spring fishing.

Winter fishing

Using jig nod tackle in winter, you can calculate in which horizon the future catch is moving. In order not to alert the fish, you can use snow or ice crumble to darken the hole. But with float gear, the hole must be kept clean, otherwise you may not notice the bite. If complementary feeding is used, then a slow release of the jig without hesitation, with periodic short pauses, can work. If there is no bite, you should change the location.

Spring fishing

In the spring, when the water has almost entered the banks, you should choose a worm for bait, because almost all the fish bite on it. Local residents prefer to fish by casting or dipping. It should be noted that spring bites can be too strong, so you should monitor the stands more closely.

Summer fishing

In the warmer seasons, in the Kaluga region you can find chub, white bream, bream, roach, and silver bream. In order to catch large prey, you need to seriously stock up on bait and bait. For example, you need to have at least 5 maggots on the hook. If you take corn, then several grains at once. For catching large whitefish, the most successful time for fishing will be warm July, when the water level is slightly lower than usual. You should choose either wheat or pearl barley for the bait; peas and oats are suitable. In June, fishermen often fish at night using a flashlight.

Autumn fishing

Active fishing continues until late autumn. During the “Indian summer” period, fishermen use a picker with minor external changes: instead of an end sinker, fishermen tie a feeder, the picker turns into a feeder. Fishing can be especially successful using an oscillating spoon. The main prey is pike.

Fishing places

In the region you can choose a fishing spot from various rivers and lakes. For this, maps are often used that mark the most promising fishing spots.

Map of fishing spots
Many small bodies of water are not marked on maps, which is why it is best to learn about them from local residents first-hand.

Flowing reservoirs are usually distinguished by a wide variety of fish species, while standing reservoirs can contain rare, poorly distributed trophies. Most of them are located along the Kaluga Highway, but before your trip it’s worth familiarizing yourself with the most popular of them in more detail.

Oka

This river is the main waterway of the region, and the diversity of fish in it is very large. In its areas you can find bream, burbot, bluegill, podust, pike, pike perch, perch and many other trophies. From time to time, sterlet is caught on hooks, but catching it is prohibited; if caught, it must be released. In addition, in places with a large abundance of stones in the river, crayfish are found.

View of the Oka
The Oka is a large, full-flowing river with a rapid current, which is why for fishing on it it is best to use a boat with a motor, and when fishing with bottom gear from the shore, use heavy feeders and sinkers with protection against drift.

Fishing on the Oka is carried out mainly on feeders and donks, however, spinning anglers will not be left without bites. In quiet places, fishing with float gear is possible, but it is somewhat less common. The Oka runs through almost the entire region, so problems with choosing a convenient place are unlikely to arise.

Water resources of the region

The Kaluga region is not very rich in water: of course, it is not a desert - there are rivers, ponds, and lakes - but there are few of them in comparison with other regions. There are hundreds of hectares of wetlands in the west, but overall they occupy a small percentage of the area. The region cannot boast of natural lakes; there are few of them here, but there are many reservoirs - small and large artificial ponds, including those specially designed for paid fishing.

In the mirror of numbers - the very best:

• Bezdon is the deepest lake of natural (glacial) origin, the maximum mark is around 40 meters, the water is transparent to a level of 8-10 meters. Fishing is paid, in summer it is better to have a boat with you so as not to break through the reeds to the water, but recently this small body of water (only a kilometer by 800 meters) has been intensively improved. Here you can catch tench, grass carp, pike, perch, carp, bream, crucian carp, rudd, and catfish. Thanks to the springs gushing at the bottom and the oxygen content, the fish has an excellent taste; • Zhelokhovskoe, or Tish, is the largest oxbow lake, its length exceeds 4 km, the water mirror occupies 32 hectares of area. Several smaller oxbow lakes adjoin it. If you fish from the shore, perch, carp, crucian carp, as well as the toothy predator – pike, bite well. Clean air and excellent ecological conditions attract many people here, including fishermen. At the same time, the catches are not very impressive: there are a lot of fish, but mostly small specimens are caught.

The fishiest artificial ponds include:

  • Lompad, or Lyudinovo Reservoir - beautiful landscapes and clean water, these are the two main characteristic features of this natural monument. The third is the wealth of the underwater world. The jigs are used for bream and bream, which usually make up at least half of each catch. There are also ruffs, carps, perches, and pikes are found only small and infrequently - in total there are 17 species of fish;
  • Brynskoye - this reservoir is a feeding pond where fish released into it gain weight. For fishing enthusiasts, carp are of greatest interest - with float tackle you can easily catch the 10 kg required by the package; perch, small-sized grass carp, roach, ruffe, and crucian carp are also easily caught. As a rule, larger specimens are caught when fishing from a boat;
  • The Milyatinskoe reservoir covers an area of over 380 hectares, which makes it one of the largest reservoirs in the region. The average depth is about two meters. Fishing on it is paid, the most interesting is the predator, which is caught on spinners, wobblers, under the shore, from a boat - with or without a motor. A popular fishing method is trolling, which is used to catch pike – usually about a kilogram, but you can catch larger beauties; jigs can catch perches larger than your palm. There are also crucian carp, rudd and roach, and tench is found in small quantities. Since there are no industrial enterprises nearby, the fish is not contaminated with toxins and heavy metals, it can be safely sent to the pot and the fire - the fish soup will be excellent.
