How the Rybinsk Reservoir was formed
Quite a lot is known about the history of the largest artificial lake, located on the Volga, Sheksna and Mologa. 17 thousand years ago, on the site of the Rybinsk Reservoir, there was a glacial lake, which then became shallow. On the territory of the resulting lowland, in the first half of the 20th century, it was planned to build the largest artificial reservoir in the world.
Construction began in 1935 near the village of Perebory, and by the fall of 1940 the Volga was blocked in order to begin filling the reservoir the following spring. Work was carried out until 1947. During the implementation of this goal, the city of Mologa was completely flooded in the Rybinsk Reservoir, whose residents were resettled to the “mainland”.
