Winter fishing at the Shchukino recreation center

Nizhny Novgorod is one of the most interesting places for active recreation, including fishing. Large and clean reservoirs, which harbor many underwater inhabitants, are a favorite place for local and visiting fans to sit with a fishing rod on the shore.

But it’s one thing when you just want to relax on the shore with your family, and quite another when you go to a pond with the goal of catching a lot of fish. Most experienced fishermen do just that. But for this you need to choose the right place for fishing, tackle and bait.

What kind of fish is found in Nizhny Novgorod

Novgorod reservoirs are not famous for rare fish, but there are more than enough familiar species. An interesting fact is that fishermen’s catches often include quite large fish, which are considered rare for other regions. Most often, fishermen manage to catch:

  • Pike;
  • Perch;
  • crucian carp;
  • Bream;
  • Roach;
  • Pike perch;
  • Bersha;
  • Chub;
  • Bleak;
  • Rudd;
  • Ide;
  • Yelets;
  • Asp;
  • Minnow;
  • Ruff;
  • Burbot.

True, in order to catch a really big fish you need to have knowledge about catchable fishing spots. Local fishermen are reluctant to share them, motivated by the fact that they will eat enough and catch all the fish with nets. But we did find out about a few good places that we mapped.

Map of fishing spots

In the floodplain of the Sura River behind the village of Yagodnaya (located in the Pilninsky district) there is a small lake, which the locals call Barabanskoye. There are quite a lot of large predatory fish in the lake; pike weighing about a kilogram and medium-sized perch are often found. Peaceful fish are dominated by crucian carp, roach and bream.

The Gorky Reservoir, which is located in the village of Andronovo, Gorodetsky district, often attracts fishermen. They fish on the reservoir all year round, and some areas do not freeze in winter and you can fish with a spinning rod. The most common species caught are perch, pike perch and bersh.

The Piana River flows through almost the entire territory of the Nizhny Novgorod region, but for fishermen, the area located near the village of Annenkovsky Quarry is of particular interest. The village is located in the Vad region and lies on the right bank of the river. Fans of fishing for predatory fish will be interested in hunting for large pike, perch and chub.

Lake Arbuzovo also attracts lovers of active recreation. But it is quite difficult to call this body of water a lake; due to its small width, it looks more like a channel. The average depth is about 2 meters. White fish bite very well, and it is better to fish from the shore using a float rod. I recommend using a worm or bloodworm as bait.

Near the village of Troitskoye there is a small lake called Armanikha. The reservoir is known to local lovers of fishing for predatory fish. Here you can catch simply huge pike and perch. The main thing is to choose the right bait and do not forget to arm yourself with a powerful spinning rod.

Winter fishing at the Shchukino recreation center

Fishing in winter is a very interesting and exciting activity for anglers. After all, it is in winter that a fisherman has his own romance when fishing. The advantages of winter fishing include the fact that it is at this time of year that you can get to all available places for fishing on the ice. There is also currently so-called paid fishing. Its advantage is that you can come for such fishing with the whole family and relax, barbecue, and enjoy the beautiful winter nature.

During winter fishing you can catch a wide variety of fish. The most important thing is to know how, when and what to catch this or that fish.

For example, in order to catch a pike in winter, you need to work hard, since its activity decreases in winter. You need to know the following: in winter, pike mainly hide in stones and thickets of grass. You have the greatest chance of catching a pike on first ice than in the dead of winter. Also, in order to catch a pike, you need to immediately drill as many holes as possible (about 10). If the fish still doesn’t bite, then you need to move to another place and continue trying to catch pike.

The likelihood of catching a pike increases depending on what you use to catch it. The most successful tackle is a spinner, about 50-80 mm in length, and they should be of different colors. Towards the end of winter, you can purchase smaller spoons.

Also in winter, pike can be caught on a balance beam and on a girder. When catching fish with a balancer, just like with a spoon, you need to drill several holes; if there is no bite, you need to change the holes. The size of the balancer should be no more than 5 centimeters. You can catch pike with a girder both at depth and in coastal places, depending on where the bite is.

In winter you can also catch fish such as bream. Bream is a very shy fish, so you need to drill holes as quietly as possible, at a distance of 5-7 meters from each other. If you attack a school of bream, you can catch a huge amount of fish. In winter, bream is mainly found near the bed of the reservoir. Bream can be caught on a fishing rod with a jig, methodically checking all the holes.

In winter you can also catch perch. It is especially well caught 2-3 weeks after the ice freezes. You should catch perch in calm, quiet, windless weather. The perch bites very well in the evening. Perch really loves various thickets and depth changes. In winter, perch is mainly caught using balance beams and spoons.

Also in winter you can catch a lot of different fish. Winter fishing is the most interesting and unforgettable activity. Winter fishing has many of its own characteristics and joys, especially when a lot of fish are caught.

Happy fishing!

Babinsky backwater on the Oka River is one of the best places for fishing. If you are focused on catching pike, then you should pay attention to areas of the backwater with thickets of water lilies. A clean bottom, almost complete absence of trash and a depth of about 2 meters makes this backwater a very promising place for fishing for large pike, perch and asp.

In the Borsky district there is an excellent reservoir for fishing enthusiasts - Lake Kislenko. You can get to the reservoir from the village of Neklyudovo, the distance is only 1.5 kilometers. There is a lot of fish in the lake, but most often you catch pike and perch. Bream, roach and rudd bite a little less often.
