Anton Shaganov
Breden (also known under the local names “volokushka”, “volokusha”) is essentially a small seine, differing from the classic seine only in length (from 6 to 30 meters, rarely longer) and the method of application: the seine is a casting tackle, it is swept from a boat or boats, surrounding a certain part of the reservoir, after which the tackle is pulled ashore or onto the ice (for winter fishing).
Breden is a winding tackle, they bring it into a reservoir and wade it to the fish, without the help of boats. I have already repeatedly described the design and production of nonsense with my own hands, so here I will only recall the general appearance of the gear and its components (Fig.

Aluminum
Aluminum models are lightweight and stable.
Thanks to two convenient runners, they move smoothly over snow and ice. Some aluminum models have reliable handles to make it comfortable for a person to hold. These options are distinguished by high sides and reliable fastenings. Aluminum fishing sleds come in lengths of 2 m, 2.5 and 3 meters.
Some models are equipped with arches and an awning . There are double models with a lid, models with a locker. The price of aluminum drag sleds is from 35,000 to 95,000 rubles.
Advantages of aluminum products:
- Ease of movement
- Sustainability
- Suitable size (can be transported on the roof of a car)

Important! You should definitely purchase a case for plastic models; it will help keep them safe.
The price of plastic options for fishing is from 4,000 to 40,000 rubles.
Finnish
This type of sled first appeared in Sweden. They were used as a means of transportation. Nowadays Finnish sleighs are used to transport fishing gear.
Such sleds weigh no more than 8.5 kg, the length of the runners does not exceed 1.37 meters. Such characteristics allow the Finnish sled to easily move on ice and snow. To make them glide better, plastic ski-like ones can be attached to the steel runners.
Finnish fishing sleds consist of a high seat, a special frame and runners. They can be used as a fishing chair .
The main thing is that they will conveniently transport everything for fishing, and then - a rich catch. Finnish fishing models are equipped with special fastenings for transporting goods . There are models with a motor and a special wheel. These additions make the speed faster.
Interesting! Folding models are also made for convenient transportation.
Advantages:
- Strength
- Ease
- Durability
The price of Finnish drags ranges from 7,500 to 80,000 (motosleds).
The most common types of sleds for winter fishing
On frozen bodies of water, the most convenient types of structures for transporting heavy fishing equipment are:
Metal sleds, which in turn are divided into collapsible and non-collapsible.

Wooden sled. In order for wooden sleds to serve for a long time and properly, they must be treated with a special impregnation and covered with waterproof paint. These precautions will help protect the wooden runners and body of the product from moisture.
Dragging sleds for fishing. This manual transportation design has a whole list of advantages, which will be discussed below.
Inflatable sled. The simplest product, which is also the easiest to transport from home to the fishing spot. The only drawback is that inflatable sleds are not particularly durable and, accordingly, reliable.
Finnish sled. Many fishermen recognize only such sleds. This is a structure consisting of long runners and a high chair mounted on them.
The main advantage is that you don’t have to drag a Finnish sled. You can move on them in the same way as on skis, pushing off with your feet instead of poles. In addition, the fisherman already has a comfortable place to sit near the ice hole.
These and other types of sleds are convenient to attach to snowmobiles.
How to do it yourself?
You can make a fishing model with your own hands. The easiest ones to make are metal ones .
They can be made collapsible. The metal structure consists of a solid base and a platform made of boards or plywood. All accessories will be transported on it. Runners must be attached to the sled .
In order to make a fishing sled with your own hands, you will need an aluminum sheet 3-4 mm thick.
The contours of the reamer are drawn on it and the workpiece is cut out. The finished development is bent using a bending machine at a certain angle. Drill through holes. Make the bottom in the same way as the side walls.
Now it's the runners' turn. Take a channel made of aluminum and magnesium alloy of the required length. Mark a fold line and an angle on it, which will serve as the place where the runners bend. They cut right through, then bend the profile.
Assembly
Collect as follows:
- Drill through holes
- Fasten parts of future sleds using rivets
- Clamp the bolts with nuts
- Homemade sleigh is ready
Finnish sled: making it yourself
If you have the necessary materials and tools, every master can build a sled, and then use it for riding or fishing.
Skids
The easiest option is to use old, unnecessary skis with metal edging as runners. If they do not have an edging, then 4 corners with drilled holes for bolts are simply attached to the tree.
You can also make reliable metal runners using the following materials as a base:
- round aluminum pipe 30 x 4 mm and 22 x 3.5 mm;
- sheet aluminum 4 mm thick;
- porous ribbed rubber for the footrest and footrest.
To make runners, you will have to get a welding machine and a pipe bender. From a pipe measuring 30 x 4, bend the base of the sled (2 parts), drill holes in it for attaching the chair and footrests (the latter are made from a 22 x 3.5 pipe and sheet metal). All elements are secured by welding, and pieces of rubber are glued on top of the back of the runners and the footrest. A frame is also placed on the guide tubes to add rigidity to the entire structure.
Chair
To save money and time, you can attach an old chair to the runners by drilling holes in it for the bolts. To make your own chair you will need:
- aluminum pipe 22 x 3.5 mm;
- planed wooden planks.
Legs and vertical posts are bent from the pipe, and wooden planks - the seat and back - are fixed in their corresponding areas with rivets. Holes are made in the finished chair for attachment to the runners. Cover all wooden elements with paint or varnish.

Back
The back of the chair is “built up” with similar wooden planks, and a top wooden bar is installed. For comfort, the handles are covered with porous rubber. If you plan to make a folding sled, then wing nuts are used to fix the vertical posts and the chair.
Modification of the sled to improve comfort
To ride on loose snow, it is worth purchasing special plastic attachments for the Finnish sleds made - they will not allow the runners to sink into the snowdrifts. To reduce the risk of injury, you can cover the handles, footrests, and also install a platform for the feet with anti-slip material. In order to secure the load, elastic bands and hooks in the required quantity are immediately attached. If desired, the sled can be made self-propelled by adding a motor and a gas tank on a separate frame.
Despite the greater durability and wear resistance of purchased sleds, many anglers prefer to make them themselves. With winter transport, fishing will become more accessible, comfortable and fun entertainment, and without extra costs.
Inflatable
This version of a fishing sled consists of straight support cylinders with a small deck between them.
Flexible runners are glued to the cylinders. There are 3 pairs of handles on the sides, 1 pair of handles on the bow and stern. They have elastic straps . The deck has four strips of non-slip material.
Advantages:
- Ideal for transporting fishing gear
- You can cross the wormwood
- Durable
- Heat resistant
- Quickly assemble and inflate
- Frost-resistant
Important! To inflate a sled of this type, you will need a car pump.
All inflatable models are made of gas-containing PVC . They will transport not only fishing equipment, but also the fisherman himself. When fishing, an inflatable sled can also be useful as a comfortable bench, and also as insurance in case of an unpleasant situation on the ice. The price of inflatable sleighs is from 3,500 rubles to 6,500 rubles.
Design characteristics
The drag sled owes its name to a primitive device. The drags consisted of two wooden poles connected by a transverse crossbar. They were used by peasants when moving various loads. Modern designs do not have poles. They differ from simple sleds in the presence of a bottom; it is this shape that makes the devices stable in the snow .
The structure consists of a frame and a trailer structure. The frame is represented by a cast trough, consisting of a bottom and sides. To increase strength, the side parts are made with the thickest possible edging. The bottom front and back has a rounded shape, which makes it easier to slide on snow .
The tow hitch includes a shock absorber. The spring dampens the shocks that occur during the movement of the drag.
Dragging sleds are used for transport and fishing. Fishing dragnets are large in size. The length of the structure exceeds 1.5 m, since winter fishing fishermen require various auxiliary equipment and gear. Structures intended for transportation in vehicles are more compact in size. They must fit in the trunk of a car.
