Fishing in January - How and where to fish?

In January, all underwater vegetation that has fallen to the bottom begins to actively decompose, oxidize and rot. This process has a detrimental effect on the oxygen content in the water, the lack of which affects the behavior of the fish. Therefore, in order not to be left without a catch, you should not expect a bite in such places. It is better to look for fish in areas with a clean bottom, preferably muddy or sandy.

The most productive fishing will be in reservoirs with a current, where the water is naturally enriched with oxygen due to the constant mixing of water masses. In January, the fish roll into wintering pits, hang around areas rich in natural food, stand near coastal reeds, at depth changes and other promising places.

The most successful bite will be in the following cases:

  1. During a prolonged thaw that occurred immediately after frost.
  2. On quiet, sunny and windless days at a temperature of no more than 10 degrees.

You should not hope for a catch during:

  1. Sudden changes in pressure and temperature.
  2. Any precipitation.
  3. Strong wind, especially from the north.

Burbot fishing in January

Burbot fishing in January
The fisherman's calendar for January notes that burbot spawning begins at the end of January. For northern regions, burbot spawning occurs 7-10 days earlier, closer to the south later. The fishing calendar advises you to remember that catching burbot during the spawning season is prohibited, and the burbot bite worsens during this period. Therefore, do not miss the feeding of burbot, observed in the first days of the month before spawning. As soon as the burbot begins to spawn, the bite practically stops; only small burbots that have not reached sexual maturity remain active. Burbot can be successfully caught on a bottom using minnows, ruffs and roach instead of bait.

Pike fishing in January

Pike fishing in January
Pike are caught using lures and large spoons, and in some reservoirs in January the pike bites well on fry. The most successful pike fishing is in January in the deep places of large reservoirs, in deep mill pools of rivers with changing water levels - the so-called active mills. Fishing in January can be productive when catching pike with winter baits. In small reservoirs and lakes, pike should be looked for at maximum depths, and in large reservoirs and rivers - in holes, whirlpools, depth changes, near reed thickets, etc.

Fishing for pike perch in January

Fishing for pike perch in January
We advise you to catch pike perch in January early in the morning and late in the evening on deep snags, in piles and pools. On large reservoirs, pike perch biting on spoons for several days (up to 7-10) is observed with a large discharge of water. Usually in these conditions it is caught throughout the day, at a depth of 5-7 m - in hollows, closer to deep holes. Using float rods, always with bait, or even better with bait, they catch bream, roach, silver bream, gudgeon, dace, chub, and ruff.

Perch fishing in January

Perch fishing in January
The amount of oxygen has a strong influence on the perch bite. If there is enough of it, then the perch stays in the upper boundaries of coastal dumps, old channels, flooded ravines, preferring a hard bottom covered with snags, closer to small fish sites. Small perch can hunt throughout the winter on the coastline, near reed thickets. Perch fishing in January is done using a fishing rod with jig tackle and lures. Perch is less willing to take bait: only on certain days, for a short time at dawn or at dusk, can it be caught with a small spoon baited with a perch eye or a small fry.

Catching chub, roach, bream

Catching chub, roach, bream
On some rivers in places with a medium current, a sandy or pebble bottom, a chub takes a small piece of unsalted lard. On quiet, windless nights, preferably during a thaw, in rivers with a smooth, not strong current, fish are caught with a flashlight. Roach, chub, white bream, and silver bream are caught with float rods using bloodworms, worms, and pieces of bird lung. The fish bite in January is improved by using bait made from small bloodworms, crushed boiled potatoes, and various cereals.

To guarantee a guaranteed catch when fishing, we recommend using the appropriate bait and bite activators. This attracts a large number of fish to the fishing grounds and significantly increases the chance of a good catch!

To compile a trout fishing calendar, materials from the book by M.M. Matveev were used. “Seasons of a Fisherman” Moscow, FiS, 1988 and other sources.

In addition to this fishing calendar, it would not be superfluous to take into account the factors influencing the bite mentioned in the article When the fish bites - what affects the fish’s bite.
