How to choose an inflatable boat

When choosing inflatable boats for productive swims on bodies of water, it is extremely important to determine the key characteristics:

Boat length

. A parameter that affects both the capacity of the inflatable vessel and its purpose. If in the future it will be used only as a model for a walk, then a boat up to 2.0 meters in size will be the ideal choice. If your priority is fishing or hunting, then you should focus on both the number of people who will swim with you and the amount of cargo required.

Capacity

. As recommendations for this characteristic, we will immediately give approximate guidelines for the minimum length:

for solo fishing, this figure can vary from 2.0 to 3.- meters (depending on the amount of gear you take with you);
for two or three people, boats from 3.0 to 4.5 meters are suitable;
four or more people will fit perfectly on vessels from 5 meters, however, such models, due to low demand, are quite rare.

Strength

. This parameter is determined by what material is used to make the hull of the inflatable boat. According to modern standards, almost all models are sewn from PVC (polyvinyl chloride), containing 5-9 thin layers with connecting threads. This material copes well with its functions in open water, but for swimming in snags, bushes, reeds or in shallow water, it is better to use boats with a more durable base, so as not to accidentally damage the cylinders. This can be either reinforced PVC (with additional layers of a durable base) or a material with a special surface impregnation.

Seam type

. In accordance with the classification, the seams on the boat can be glued or welded. The first type is found on the vast majority of cheap boats, and is not reliable in the long term. Weld seams are considered to be of the highest quality, since the likelihood of their opening is high only when the material ages.

Bottom type

. According to this classification, the bottom of the boat can be

rigid - made of processed wood material or duralumin. It gives rigidity and strength to the structure, but it takes a long time to assemble and requires more space.
non-inflatable - the most impractical bottom from the point of view of operation, made of rubberized PVC or other dense material. It is absolutely unstable and can get accidentally punctured, but boats with such a bottom are cheaper than others.
inflatable - a more comfortable type of bottom, usually made from the same material as the main part of the boat. They have higher stability and increase the load capacity, but they weigh more, and the probability of puncture is also high.

Optional add-ons

. In some cases, even cheap inflatable boats can have such design elements as a water drain check valve, additional fastenings for the fuel tank, seat covers, rigid protection for the submerged part of the cylinders and the bottom, etc. We strongly recommend that you pay attention to this, since add-ons can bring a lot of benefits during regular use.

Rating of the best PVC boats

Its compilation would have been impossible without feedback from owners of such small rubber boats. When analyzing them, we took into account how convenient, safe, useful and practical this or that model is, as well as whether its quality corresponds to the established price.

Best PVC Inflatable Rowing Boats

Such models are usually not very expensive; they cost several times less than those designed for a motor. Most often, they are characterized by a simple design and small size. They are mainly used by fishermen or hunters, but for long rafting trips this is not the best option.

Pilot C-200

Let's start the review with this offer, which in our rating can be called the best for fishermen who are going to go sailing alone. This single-seat model has a non-inflatable bottom made of a thick layer of reinforced polyvinyl chloride. Therefore, it is not surprising that reviews write about the convenience of fishing even while standing. Naturally, the product is small and therefore very light, but at the same time it stays quite reliably on the water, does not tip over and feels confident when turning.

The “Lotsman C-200” model has a well-placed seat, almost in the middle. But sitting on it for a long time can be uncomfortable due to its rigidity. Since this is a rowing-type watercraft, the set includes two oars, which are considered quite comfortable for long-term use. Separately, it should be noted the high quality of the seams, applied end-to-end and reinforced with fabric, which makes the alloy even safer.

This is one of the most durable and lightest models in our rating. Its owners note in reviews that the air in it is held reliably, it is easy to inflate and, if necessary, deflates without problems. True, its bottom is not inflatable. The reliability of this option lies in the fact that it can stay afloat even if one of the compartments is punctured, since there are two of them.

The Aqua Optima 260 boat does not have a keel, but despite this, it handles quite well when turning. It is quite easy to control it with the help of oars that come with a pump, oarlocks, and a rope. The disadvantages include hard, uncomfortable seats.

The length of Aqua Optima is 260 cm, which partly explains its low weight of 13 kg. It has a simplified design with a minimum number of seams, which reduce the likelihood of damage to the product. The board can carry a maximum of 220 kg. The characteristics of this model are not the best, but, as for a budget model, they are quite acceptable.

The best inflatable boats with a hard bottom

Poseidon PN 500 (500 cm)

Rating: 4.9

Poseidon PN 500 is an extremely expensive boat in the premium segment, accommodating up to 11 people and capable of transporting cargo weighing up to 1915 kilograms. Both the bottom and the cylinders here are made of reinforced PVC fabric with a density of 1200 g/m2, which ensures maximum strength and reliability of the model in the long term. The engine configuration implies the possibility of placing a 50-horsepower unit on the transom, which is capable of accelerating the vessel to 70-80 kilometers per hour.

Among other features of the Poseidon PN 500, we note that the diameter of the cylinders is 62 centimeters - this is the best result in the selection, however, pumping and complete assembly of the vessel takes an extremely long time. The flooring used is standard, plywood, 12 millimeters thick, does not always survive until the entire boat reaches its limit state, and requires re-purchase over the years of use. In general, in terms of overall dimensions, this is the best option in the category. True, the availability of his choice is not the prerogative of everyone.

Kasatka KS 385 Marine is a modernized version of the standard river boat “Kasatka-385”, designed for seafaring. The maximum power of the motor installed on its reinforced transom can reach 30 horsepower, but the maximum speed is 3-4 kilometers per hour lower than that of its river counterpart. The reason for this lies in the completely redesigned bottom, which increased the comfort of riding on waves and improved seaworthiness.

The maximum carrying capacity of the model is 740 kilograms, and as a small “frigate” for two or three people it will be great. But for the stated six passengers it will be quite cramped: during fishing, various kinds of problems may arise due to the lack of operational space for swinging or fishing. However, the Kasatka KS 385 Marine is also used as a boat for racing competitions, which neither we nor the experts expected to see.

Despite the fact that the load capacity of this boat is obviously lower than that of its competitor Gladiator C 420 DP (only 900 kilograms), its strength characteristics are at a much higher level. This is facilitated by the high density of PVC material (1200 g/m2), the presence of welds and an additional reinforced layer. All this, coupled with the large dimensions, resulted in 95 kilograms of weight, transportation of which is quite difficult for one person.

Gladiator C 420 DP (420 cm)

Rating: 4.6

The fourth place in the rating goes to the Gladiator C 420 DP boat, which belongs to the premium segment of the market. Despite its Chinese origin, the global community of fishermen and hunters received it very warmly, mainly due to the high-quality protection of the cylinders using additional reinforced lining. With dimensions exceeding the Yukona 400 TS, this model weighs a couple of kilograms less (87), which is explained by the use of lighter protective elements.

The deck is made of standard moisture-resistant FSF plywood with aluminum edging, and the bow is covered with an awning, which tends to wear out quickly. The carrying capacity of the Gladiator C 420 DP is about 1087 kilograms, and the maximum number of passengers can be accommodated up to 7 people. True, comfortable fishing with such a load is unlikely to be possible: the most comfortable, from the point of view of users, is for no more than 5 people to be in the boat at the same time. Purely visually, it looks great, and it goes on sale in six color variations. It is expensive, but in terms of price/quality ratio it beats almost any competitor.

Yukona 400 TS (400 cm)

Rating: 4.5

Yukona 400 TS is an extremely large boat with a capacity of up to 6 people, the dead weight of which reaches 89 kilograms. It is difficult to transport and takes up a lot of space, but it has one very important advantage over its competitors: the high density of the five-layer PVC material (at 1100 g/m2). In order to ensure greater structural reliability, the outer part of the 50-centimeter cylinders is protected by a fender and a splash guard. All seams are soldered and additionally taped, which also adds strength.

The total carrying capacity of the Yukona 400 TS was 800 kilograms, and for a 4-meter boat this is very good. It can be equipped with 30 horsepower engines that reach a speed of 70 kilometers per hour. The most important thing in this whole story is the price, much lower than for the Riviera Maxima or Flinc Boatsman considered. That's why we award her fifth place

"Riviera Maxima" 3400 SK (340 cm)

Rating: 4.4

A very suitable option for the summer season, expensive, but capable of serving faithfully for up to 20 years...if you look after it well. "Riviera Maxima" 3400 SK combines a beautiful appearance and high quality finishing, for which it is awarded almost the highest demand among all representatives of this category. True, the “Compact” model is in use, and only because the prices for the full-size version are too high.

The diameter of the side of the model is 46 centimeters, and this is quite enough to prevent water from getting inside. A denser PVC material, reinforced with synthetic and polymer threads, allows (with smaller dimensions) to transport cargo with a total weight of up to 650 kilograms: Flinc Boatsman BT365SK, with all due respect, is far from this. And the floorboard looks much more representative, since its thickness is 12 millimeters. The maximum engine power is also at 20 horsepower, and the permissible speed is 50 kilometers per hour.

Flinc Boatsman BT365SK (365 cm)

Rating: 4.3

The peculiarity of this vessel from the Flinc company is its visual breadth - in comparison with the Viking VN 360 LS, it looks much larger, although the difference is only a few centimeters. An interesting layout, coupled with a pleasant design (either graphite orange or camouflage color) makes the Boatsman BT365SK very noticeable against the background of other products, and in terms of characteristics, everything is going very well.

The maximum power of the component engine here is 20 horsepower, which does not seem excessive and provides an acceptable speed for moving a fairly heavy boat (64 kilograms). The hard floor is made of standard plywood with water-repellent impregnation, the thickness of which is 9 millimeters. It is stable, but, as users note, if 4 people are in the boat at the same time and the pressure increases on a limited area, it may not withstand it. But the vessel’s carrying capacity on 47-centimeter cylinders is 600 kilograms, and the likelihood of an accidental breakdown with such indicators is quite high.

Poseidon Viking VN 360 LS (360 cm)

Rating: 4.2

An inflatable boat with increased load capacity, the main advantage of which is the presence of a reinforced transom, on which motors with a power of up to 18 horsepower can be installed. True, the excessive potential of the Viking VN 360 LS is very often out of place: sensitivity to waves and excessive yaw along the course can play a cruel joke, even to the point of capsizing.

But in everything else, real superiority is felt. The diameter of the cylinders was increased to 45 centimeters with their end part changed to a conical shape, making it eccentric in relation to the bottom. The shifted center of mass better holds the boat on the water, making it feel at least some semblance of safety. Thanks to the increased dimensions in length and width (360x160 centimeters), the carrying capacity was over 500 kilograms - enough not only to accommodate 3 people, but also to lift on board an impressive arsenal of fishing or hunting equipment. There is also a 9-millimeter thick plywood floor, which ensures proper functioning throughout almost the entire life of the boat.

Flinc FT320L “Lux” (320 cm)

Rating: 4.1

A three-seater boat with a bow canopy, capable of transporting up to 320 kilograms of total weight. It is a good alternative to the Pelican 300 TK both in terms of size and price, although in some nuances it is extremely modest. For example, in terms of the maximum power of the component engine, here it is only 6 horsepower. In general, the difference is noticeable, but only appears during long swims.

The floor of the Flinc FT320L “Lux” is lined with 6.5 mm plywood “book” type, but its resource is limited to 3-4 years of use - then you have to look for an alternative. The color variation is limited only to gray and green colors, but by and large, no one loses anything, and there is no need to overpay for “exclusivity.” The only bewilderment among all users who operated this vessel was the fastening of the clamping bar to the inside of the transom using self-tapping screws. Their output is barely 5 millimeters... and there are no traces of glue or other attempts at additional fastening.

Pelican 300 TK (300 cm)

Rating: 4.0

A 3-meter boat with a built-in transom, the bottom of which is lined with special marine plywood with the outer part treated with an anti-slip coating. Thanks to this, as well as the presence of sides with a diameter of 40 centimeters, which minimize the ingress of water inside, the Pelican 300 TK is comfortable to stand on, which is very important when aiming while hunting or casting a spinning rod.

The manufacturing material for this boat is a combination of standard PVC and polyurethane, which better resists scratches (including deep ones) and retains a pleasant appearance longer. The seams are taped, and twice, but the quality does not suffer very much from this. According to internal tests, the Pelican 300 TK can withstand up to 10-15 years of intensive use, albeit with periodic maintenance (no one has canceled accidental punctures and unusable valves). Such a vessel is quite expensive, comes in 9 color variations, and can be equipped with a motor with a power of up to 10 horsepower.

Depending on your hobby, you need to choose a boat for yourself. If you need a boat for hunting, then preference is given to some characteristics, for fishing - to others, and for tourism - to others.
