What kind of fish can you catch on the Ob?
If we talk about what types of fish live in a given water area, then it will be easier to list those fresh “inhabitants” that are not there.
Thus, the river, without the slightest exaggeration, includes an incredibly large number of fish, the most active of which are considered to be:
- Yelets;
- Zander;
- Burbot;
- Ide;
- Pike;
- Roach;
- crucian carp;
- Perch;
- Bream;
In addition to the above list of the most common inhabitants of the river, one cannot fail to note those fish species that are considered the most rare and valuable:
- Sturgeon;
- Chirom;
- Muxon;
- Whitefish;
- Sterlet;
- Nelma;
Places for the best fishing on the Ob
A wide range of towns and small hamlets located along the Ob River allows a large number of citizens who want to go fishing to settle in good places that have already been prepared and “equipped” by other fishermen and local residents.
In addition to comfort, the following places also include a high probability of catching fish by an angler:
- Verkh-Suzun is a small village located on the right bank of the river. In this place, according to reviews, you can catch carp, crucian carp, pike, perch and bream. If you go a little higher upstream (behind the village on the right side), you can bring home a lot of ide, which is often caught with a spinning rod. Among other things, it is worth saying that fishing in the territory of this locality and on the river as a whole is completely free;
- Kudryashevsky is a village located near the regional center of Novosibirsk, which cannot but be considered good news for urban fishermen. The best, truly “fishing” places are located near Bear Island. Fauna such as crucian carp, pike, roach and perch can be caught;
- Ilyich is a village that originates near Barnaul. Local residents claim that an excellent bite can most often be observed in the area of the so-called Dam. Regarding what kind of inhabitants this water area is inhabited, it is noted that here you can easily catch bream, crucian carp and ruffe;
The best time for fishing on the Ob
Considering the fact that the reservoir includes a lot of fish, both heat-loving and cold-loving, it is impossible to say that some time of the year is less or more fruitful in terms of catch and bite.
- Spring: This period of the year on the river begins only in the month of April, when the ice has completely melted. At first, the activity of the fish can be understood due to the “winter hunger strike”, and after that, the matter is clear - spawning alternates;
- Until the end of June, freshwater inhabitants are extremely active due to the aforementioned spawning. Towards the end of summer, fishing is also active, during which you can catch a lot of fish with caviar;
- Some argue that in the fall the fauna residents are not as active as before, which is understandable. Some say that in the fall the season for fishing with spinning rods for such species as ide, sturgeon, pike and perch just opens;
- This period is characterized by frosts and strong winds. But, even in such unfavorable weather, you can observe a stable bite of pike, carp and crucian carp;
Moving around a body of water on watercraft during a spawning ban
Movement on water bodies on watercraft, including motor boats, is not prohibited, provided that there are no fishing gear on the watercraft.
You should also pay attention to the fact that within the protected exclusion zones of hydraulic structures and bridges established in accordance with the legislation of the Russian Federation, fishing is prohibited regardless of time. It is not completely clear to us how to determine the exclusion zone of bridges across the Ob River and whether it exists at all in those places where areas are not fenced or guarded; this requires a more in-depth study. At the same time, the prohibition zone previously designated as “500 meters from the bridge”, after the latest edition of the rules, is invalid. Regarding hydraulic structures, the prohibition distance is ambiguous and may vary. Therefore, before fishing in a place where it may be prohibited, we advise you to call the Federal State Budgetary Institution “Verkhneobrybvod” and check the possibility of fishing in this area.
At high-risk hydropower facilities, the fishing ban zone is set at 500 meters in the upper and lower reaches of the hydroelectric complex, regardless of time.
At fish farms, their workshops and points, cages for growing and keeping fish located on water bodies, fishing is prohibited at a distance of less than 500 meters, regardless of time.
As you can see, in our region fishing during the spring spawning period of fish is possible, under certain conditions. To ensure that the situation does not change in the future, we once again urge you to be conscious about fishing at this time. The fish reproduces - give it this chance!
Fishing gear on the Ob
This river, having a large length and a mass of fish species, allows its fishermen guests to try a variety of fishing gear, which, as it turns out, bears fruit.
In other words, almost all of the existing fishing gear is excellent for fishing on the Ob River:
- Spinning (often fished with spinning all year round): Fishing is done exclusively from the shore, at least it is the one that brings the highest results;
- Often, spinning is used only when you want to catch predatory fish: perch, pike or burbot;
- As regular fishermen who spend a lot of time on the Ob advise, it is advisable to choose rods made of bamboo or birch;
- Dung worms, corn, bread can be used as bait;
- Fishing with a jig;
Endorheic lakes with rivers flowing into them
The ban on fishing (from swimming devices and gear with more than two hooks) in closed lakes with rivers flowing into them will last from April 25 to May 25
Please note that fishing for sterlet in the Ob River is prohibited regardless of time. In the Novosibirsk reservoir, sterlet is prohibited from being caught from the moment the ice melts until June 30th.
Siberian sturgeon, taimen, lenok, grayling, nelma, muksun are prohibited from being caught everywhere in our region.
Reviews from fishermen
Being a fairly active fisherman, I try to never waste time choosing the most desirable fishing spots. For about six months now I have been giving preference to the Ob River, from the banks of which I have repeatedly caught ide, pike, perch and crucian carp, and once I even managed to catch a sterlet. I cannot call myself a professional fisherman with extensive experience, but, as for me, in order to immediately understand whether a place is profitable from a fishing point of view, you don’t need to be one. I believe that fishing on the Ob River is not only fruitful, but also interesting, because in addition to the catch, you can enjoy the silence and amazing nature that takes place along the banks of the reservoir. Grade:
Anton, 23 years old (Novosibirsk)
Due to a busy work schedule and a small child, it is very rarely possible to go fishing even on weekends. But when such a moment comes, I without a doubt go to the village of Kudryashevsky, which is not only very close to the city, but also allows you to fish on its territory, located on the banks of the Ob. Each of my trips has a result: at least 5-6 kilograms of crucian carp and several small pikes. Grade:
Oleg, 25 years old (Novosibirsk)
I’ll say right away that there’s no extra money to visit paid places, so if there’s fishing, it’s only free. A lot of different fish, silence and the opportunity to relax completely free of charge - these are the three components of the Ob reservoir, of which I am a private guest. I recommend to everyone! I would like to note the natural beauty of the village of Verkh-Suzun, which, in addition to incredible landscapes, allows you to settle down on its territory and have really good fishing, and for free. This settlement, by the way, was built on the banks of the Ob River, where you can catch silver carp, crucian carp, pike and ide. Grade:
Sergey, 36 years old (Novosibirsk)
Since I live in Barnaul, and the age for long trips is no longer the same, if I want to go fishing, I go to the village of Ilyich, not far from my place of stay, where you can comfortably sit on the banks of the Ob and within a few hours catch fish for dinner, and a wide variety of them breeds: from perch to whitefish. Grade:
Anatoly, 50 years old (Barnaul)
I would like to recommend to all those who like to fish for freshwater inhabitants the Ob River, which is teeming with about 30 species of both peaceful and predatory fish. For example, last week I was able to catch about 8 kilograms of ide and 12 kilograms of pike (5 pieces) using a spinning rod. Grade:
Afanasy, 29 years old (Novosibirsk)
Good to know! From the above methods of fishing and the best places for it, we can conclude that, in principle, the Ob River along its entire length has many inhabitants, fishing for which, moreover, is a completely free pleasure.

Dear users of the site FishingSib.ru, we remind you that on April 20, 2015, the spring spawning ban on fishing came into force, which, although it does not exclude the possibility of fishing, makes significant adjustments.
Today it is no longer uncommon to see bodies of water in which the fish have disappeared completely, or there is so little of it left that many more years of reproduction of offspring by fish will be required in order to somehow restore the ichthyofauna of empty ponds, lakes, and channels. Catch volumes are becoming prohibitively high, the number of fishermen is growing, and among them the percentage of those who are ready to resort to prohibited gear and nets is growing. In order to eliminate the potential danger, fisheries authorities annually announce a spring spawning ban on fishing.
Fishing rules are approved by the federal executive body in the field of fisheries for each fishing basin. The documents defining the periods of prohibition, restrictions on the use of gear and the catching of certain types of fish are decrees of the Government of the Russian Federation and orders of the Ministry of Agriculture. The rules of the region must indicate a list of spawning grounds where any fishing will be prohibited, as well as restrictions in force during the period of the spawning ban. This is what the situation looks like for us:
“Dear fishermen, the Federal State Budgetary Institution “Verkhneobrybvod” reminds you that a fishing ban is coming into force:
- in the Ob River with all its tributaries, branches and channels from April 20 to May 20;
- from April 25 to June 10 - in the Novosibirsk reservoir;
- from April 25 to May 25 - in closed lakes with rivers flowing into them;
- from May 20 to June 15 - in the Ob River, from the mouth of the lower approach canal of the Novosibirsk Hydroelectric Power Station to the village of Maloe Krivoshchekovo;
- from May 20 to June 15 - in the Ob River, in the area of the settlements of Pochta, Beloyarka, Tashara, Vyatsky Kameshek.
During the prohibited spawning period, the following fishing gear from the shore (without the use of watercraft) is allowed for use in clause 39.9.2: one bottom or float rod, spinning rod, feeder with a total number of hooks of no more than 2 pieces, and no more than 5 girders are also allowed pieces per person.
According to the order of the Ministry of Agriculture dated October 22, 2014 No. 402, changes were made to the Fishery Rules of the West Siberian Basin and came into force on February 3, 2015. A ban has been introduced on fishing in the section of the Ob River with the floodplain from the dam of the Novosibirsk Hydroelectric Power Station down to the mouth of the approach canal, with the exception of fishing from the shore with one bottom or float rod. If you have a remote control, you are allowed to fish with a spinning rod.
The wording of the ban on fishing near bridges and hydraulic structures has changed. It is now prohibited to fish within the limits established in accordance with the legislation of the Russian Federation of protected exclusion zones of hydraulic structures - a 500-meter zone.
Take care of nature and the work of people who replenish the reserves of the Verkhenob basin: through artificial reproduction, installation of artificial spawning grounds, rescue of juveniles, etc.”
Every year, after the publication of the regulation, users have many questions and misunderstandings related to the nuances of the spring ban. We tried to say the same thing in our own words by adding markers on the map.
