Fishing in Bashkiria: the secrets of Yuri Zvykov

Toponymy

  • Other names: Agidel (Bashkir).
  • Origin of the name: the Bashkir name of the river is derived from the words “ak idel”, and in translation is identical in meaning to the Russian name - “white river”. There are two versions of the origin of this hydronym. According to the first, the river was so named because its water at the confluence with the Ufa (Karaidel - “black river”) is noticeably lighter in color. The second version is related to the color orientation of the cardinal directions: at the confluence with Ufa, Belaya runs from the south, while Ufa runs from the north.

Places for free fishing in the Republic of Adygea

The Belaya River, which flows near the village of Pobeda, is a favorite place for local and visiting feeder fishing enthusiasts. The fact is that this reservoir has very large populations of silver bream and roach. You can often find large crucian carp in the catches of fishermen using a float rod.

The Kurdzhips River flows near the village of Krasnooktyabrsky, on the banks of which you can meet a large number of fishermen walking with spinning rods. The fact is that in this place they are looking for chub. There are relatively many of these fish here, and they are most often caught on wobblers. It is worth giving preference to small-sized baits.

Not far from the village of Ozernoye the White River flows, which is a favorite place for all fishermen. The fact is that fans of spinning fishing very often catch perch and large pike perch here, but you just need to use an echo sounder in order to choose the right place. Fans of feeder fishing prefer this river, as there is a lot of bream in its waters.

Near the village of Impuls on the same river you can see a large number of people with float gear. The fact is that they come there for only one purpose - in search of rudd. There is really a lot of this fish in this place, and given its taste, few people will refuse to pickle it for beer.

Geography

  • Coastal landscape: in the upper reaches the river runs between mountain ranges overgrown with deciduous and mixed forests. Closer to the source, its banks are quite swampy, but after the confluence with the Greater Avnyar, they are dry. Throughout the mountainous section there are often rocky outcrops, in some places with grottoes and caves. After Verkhnebikkuzino, for a short distance the river flows through the hilly forest-steppe, then the real steppes begin. After turning north (not far from Kumertau), the river runs along the border of the steppe and forest-steppe zones, while its left bank is open and low, the right bank is noticeably higher and in places overgrown with broad-leaved forests. Closer to the confluence with the Ashkadar tributary, the river enters the forest-steppe zone and then continues along it - all the way to the mouth.

Fishing in Bashkiria: the secrets of Yuri Zvykov

Fishing in Bashkiria is excellent! If I'm wrong, then throw a jig at me! Both in winter and in summer, fishermen, and not only local ones, hunt on numerous rivers and lakes of the Republic. Social networks are full of photos with decent booty. I managed to record an interview with one of the skilled fishermen. Meet! Yuri Zvykov from the city of Salavat, a fisherman with significant experience and experience. Where, when and what to catch such beauties? – we’ll find out from him right now.

    - Yuri, good afternoon! Thank you for agreeing to the interview, I know how difficult it was for you to talk. Fishermen are inconspicuous and quiet people, they sit with a fishing rod on the bank and silently fish. And even more so, your brother doesn’t like to talk about where, how and what he catches. But let's break the rule at least once, so that our readers can find out whether there are actually fish in the lakes and rivers of Bashkiria? But let’s start with this: tell us a little about yourself. Where are you from?

    – I was born and raised in Salavat, my father was an avid fisherman and hunter, but at first I was indifferent to fishing.

    – How long have you been interested in fishing? And where did this interest come from?

    – In the late 90s, I was invited to go fishing by a work friend, Sergei. In the upper reaches of the Belaya River. There were much more fish then than there are now. While we were setting up camp, Sergei caught a couple of pikes with a spoon, which we immediately cooked over the fire.

I didn’t manage to catch a single fish on that trip, but the impressions of the process overwhelmed me. Since then, spending time with a fishing rod has given me great pleasure.

    Zvykov Nikolay Filippovich

    – Do you fish in the vicinity of Salavat or go somewhere else? Have you been outside the Republic? Are you traveling alone or with a group?

    – The Belaya River flows next to Salavat, we usually fish there, but downstream. The road takes approximately 130 km.

I traveled outside of Bashkiria, but not often. I traveled to Tataria a couple of times and to Kazakhstan the same number of times. We always fish with a group, sometimes a very large one. We travel less often with Sergei.

    – What is the most suitable season for fishing in Bashkiria? Judging by your photos, you mostly fish in the summer, right?

    – I fish only in open water: from spring to late autumn. I don't go on the ice. I'm afraid that one day it won't support my weight (laughs).

I prefer fishing for predators to any other. In June we catch catfish, and all summer long we catch asp, pike, chub and pike perch. In the fall, when the water is already cold, we come for burbot.

Fishing for burbot is interesting because you have to walk a lot. We throw donks with minnows. If you can’t catch a fry, then we put fish cut into pieces on the hooks, which we bring with us (bought in the city at the market). We arrange all the donks and sit and warm ourselves by the fire. Needless to say, sometimes you can’t do without the notorious 100 grams. Then we go check the donks. If we come across burbots, we remove them and throw the donks again. And so constantly, until three in the morning. Then a short nap in the car and at about 7 o’clock we take off the donks, load the fish and go home!

    Bream!

    – Where are there more fish: in lakes or rivers? Let's say I'm an inexperienced fisherman (that's how it is, in principle). How can I find out where the fish are in my area? Or is it better to go straight to Belaya or the Urals? But it’s not a fact that I can find a place on Belaya where fish are definitely found.

    – I don’t consider myself an experienced fisherman either. And it’s hard for me to say where there are more fish, in rivers or lakes? With the same success, you can try to answer another question: what is better, football or hockey? We are used to fishing in rivers. I have a friend who loves fishing on Lake Aslykul. Would prefer her to anyone else.

    – Yuri, on our website there is a special page that lists all the fish that are found in the rivers and lakes of Bashkiria. The list is huge and may no longer be relevant. Please list what kind of fish can really be caught in our waters? Is it environmentally friendly?

In the Belaya River you can catch bleak, gudgeon, cape, dace, perch, silver bream, grayling, bream, chub, ide, asp, pike, burbot, carp, catfish, sterlet. I think that the “king fish” taimen also remained in the upper reaches of the river.

In the ponds, crucian carp, carp, silver carp and grass carp are bred, and sometimes trout. If you're lucky, you might even catch some crayfish.

Regarding environmental friendliness, I will say this: everything that was caught in Belaya below Sterlitamak used to have a specific taste when cooked. The fishermen believed among themselves that this was the result of industrial waste being thrown into the river. But the last decade has been nothing so suspicious. Either the discharges stopped, or the rivers began to be cleaned, or my taste was simply dulled.

I have photos of almost all my fish trophies. I never part with my camera.

    Carp!

    – Now I ask you to reveal the subtleties of fishing skill. What does a fisherman need to have in his arsenal to catch fish anywhere and without misfires? Some special fishing rods, jigs, bait.

    – It all depends on what kind of fish you want to catch. Fish in reservoirs, no matter how you look at them, are still becoming smaller and smaller, and catching them is not easy.

A novice fisherman must have a fishing minimum. This is a fishing rod, a set of lines, sinkers, hooks and floats, a fish tank, and, of course, bait and bait. In fishing stores, of which there are more and more, you can buy everything you need: from equipment to motor boats. For any wallet size!

    Experienced fisherman from Salavat

    – How do you feel about fishing on paid lakes?

    – I have an extremely negative attitude towards fishing on paid lakes. Well, it shouldn’t be that someone “takes over” the lake, which is given to all of us by nature.

Another thing is fishing in paid artificial reservoirs, where the owner buys fry, food, grows fish, and simultaneously fights against countless poachers. We sometimes fish on such reservoirs, and it turns out interesting. Throw out several spinning rods, attach bells or bells to the end, sit and drink beer. The bell rang - my bite, the bell - my partner!

Solid fisherman's trophies. Catfish, 18 kg!

    – In one of the photographs you are simply standing with a giant fish! Did you really catch it here, in Bashkiria? Tell us how you were able to get her out of the water?

“Giant fish” is catfish, of which there are many in the Belaya River. And this is far from the largest specimen! This catfish was caught in the Gafuriy district. When catching it, a rubber boat and a large landing net were used.

    – Yuri, tell us a couple of places in Bashkiria where fish are definitely found!

    – As my father-in-law, now deceased, liked to say: “Fish swim on the bottom, you won’t catch a single one!” What I mean is that fish are everywhere and a real fisherman will not return without fish.

You need to look for fish by changing bait, spoons, and fishing spots. Well, just like in the lottery, some are lucky and others are not. But usually those who are lucky are lucky...

    Fisherman and also hunter

    – And finally, what do you usually do with your catch? Salt? Are you frying? Do you use it for cutlets? Can you share your favorite recipe?

    – If there is a lot of fish, then I give it to relatives and friends. I dry the small ones, but more often than not I don’t bother, I fry them. Moreover, you always have to clean and cook yourself. My wife and I agreed 25 years ago that everything I shoot or catch, I cut up and cook myself.

    – Thank you very much for the interview, Yuri! And I will remind our readers that our guest was Yuri Zvykov, an experienced fisherman from Bashkiria, from the city of Salavat. True, he himself does not consider himself experienced, he is modest, but this is a good trait in his character.

Friends, if you have questions for Yuri, ask them in the comments, and I will ask him to answer them. Add this site to your bookmarks! New interviews are coming!

The conversation was conducted by Irek.

    Ecology

The upper reaches to Beloretsk are considered the cleanest part of the river. After this city, its waters are polluted by industrial wastes, while the concentration of pollutants exceeds the MPC by two or more times. Further, this figure continues to gradually increase - up to the city of Sterlitamak, after which its gradual decline is observed. After the city of Ufa, the concentration of pollutants increases again. Pollutants in the waters of the Belaya River include heavy metals, petroleum products, and pesticides. On the pollution scale, its water in some places corresponds to category II (slightly polluted), in others - III (polluted).

    Paid and free fishing

For most Russians, fishing is associated with a rather wild holiday and is considered a purely masculine pastime. Traditionally, for effective fishing, people tried to choose remote bodies of water where there would be no crowds. More often than not, such places were difficult to access and, of course, free.

However, modern trends are such that fishing itself is no longer just a man’s business. Whole families or in the company of friends and colleagues now go to try their luck in fishing. Another current reality is that a significant part of reservoirs is passing into private hands - running fish farms, farms, etc. An important task of such farms is maintaining the fish population, which is achieved by regularly stocking their “aquatic property” with fish.

You can fish on private reservoirs and, most often, such an activity will be very productive. However, for such pleasure you will have to pay a certain price.

An alternative to wild fishing is the opportunity to stay at one of the recreation centers located near rivers and lakes, where, in addition to comfortable accommodation and leisure conditions, all conditions for the joys of fishing are created, there are opportunities to rent gear or watercraft, prepare caught trophies, etc.

We'll talk about the most popular fishing spots in each segment below.

Where to fish near Ufa for free

In the vicinity of Ufa there are a large number of reservoirs where you can fish for free. Among the most popular lakes:

    1. Olkhovoe is a very picturesque lake and, among others, it is the largest of those located near Ufa. The catch here includes pike, bream, tench and sorozhka. The landmark you have to reach to get to Olkhovoe is the 119th stud farm.
    2. Black - this lake is located next to the village of Zinino, surrounded by dense forest. This is an excellent place for summer fishing.
    3. Archimandritskoye is a lake located along the highway to Orenburg, quite popular among lovers of lazy beach holidays, but fisherman can also find a place here.

An alternative to lakes is fishing on rivers. It is worth remembering that if fishing is not a sporting interest, and the catch is planned to be eaten, then you should not fish within the city, although the Ufa and Belaya rivers provide such an opportunity. It is better to go outside the administrative center.

    1. Ufa River. You will have to go to the village of Karaidel or to where the waters of Ufa are replenished by the Ai River. The best time for fishing is from five o'clock in the morning until lunch. Among the underwater inhabitants are pike perch, perch, bream and pike, and ide. At the same time, pike perch are more often caught using live bait, while others are attracted to maggots or worms.
    2. Belaya River. To get your catch, you should go to Sterlitamak, beyond the village of Bulgakovo, Krasny Yar. Fish is caught here in the mornings (from 5 o'clock), in the evenings, and also at nightfall. Among the prey: pike, roach, bream and bream, perch, chub, asp, dace and burbot. The most effective bite is when pre-feeding. Suitable tackle: fishing rod with float or donka.
    3. Dema River. In summer, this reservoir often becomes shallow, but even with low water it is possible to catch pike, perch, asp, and less often bream, and with great luck, sterlet. The best time for fishing is in the morning from 8 to 11 o'clock. Suitable gear: spinning float rod.

    Alloy

    • Route: usually rafting in the upper reaches of the Belaya - here the fastest current and the most picturesque shores. The settlement of Kaga is chosen as the starting point - here the water content of the river is quite sufficient for rafting, and it is also easier to get there. There are several options for the final point of the route: Kapova Cave, the village of Irgizly, or - if tourists are not deterred by the prospect of rowing for a long time in standing water - the village of Verkhnebikkuzino (dam of the Yumaguzinsky reservoir).
    • Difficulty category: 1.
    • Obstacles: shifters, shallows, pressure, pitfalls.

Fishing for pike perch in Bashkiria

The latter is found here in quite large sizes. Feeder lovers have plenty to do, and there is something for spinners too. Good bream, large roach and even sprat are common fish in the catch of local fishermen. Red-listed taimen are found in the upper reaches of the Belaya River, and brook trout are found in the channels. Common fish here are dominated by bream, roach, catfish, and crucian carp. Winter and summer fishing in these places are equally good; having been here once, many fishing enthusiasts return again and again. Feeder fishing Fishing in Bashkiria. Catching catfish with live bait Fishing in Bashkiria.

Catching pike perch with live bait Fishing in Bashkiria. They also come here for catfish. But even more pleasing is the picturesque landscape and many waterfowl. And in the surrounding forests there are foxes, martens and stoats, which is not surprising, because the area around White Lake has been declared a nature reserve. Many people go fishing to Pavlovka because the fish almost always bite.

The reservoir is huge - about a hundred kilometers long and two wide. A local attraction is the famous Pavlovsk bream. You’ll definitely bring it home, and it’s a respectable size at that. At night you can try to catch bottom fish - catfish and burbot. Sometimes you come across silver bream, chub, pike perch.

    • Pike perch in winter on the white river sprat, Bashkiria | arch-studia.ru
    • But the main fish of August are pike and perch. Pavlovka, Chebykovo, Novosaitovo, Berdyash, Karaidel, MaginskNovomullakaevo. Some travel agencies sell special fishing tours. This lake in the Davlekanovsky district is called the Bashkir Sea.

It is the largest not only in the republic, but also in the entire forest-steppe zone of the European part of Russia. The depth of Aslykul reaches meters. Naturally, there are plenty of fish here. The sorozhka is large, up to grams can be found. The pike are big, up to eight kg, but only in pits. Five-kilogram burbots are not uncommon, but you have to work hard to get them. But in any case, no one leaves here without a catch. There's enough for everyone. This lake is also a natural monument. The only secluded place is not so easy to find - it is too popular. Access to the river is normal. There is also pike perch on Atkul, although I didn’t catch it there because I was fishing for carp, but I saw it at a camp where they sell vouchers, they feed dogs with it, what a bastard. I confirm about pike perch on Atkul. I witnessed a situation while standing in line for a ticket, when one fisherman approached a lying zander of 1 kg. So the dog, which had been sleeping until that time, rushed at him so furiously that even we, who were standing in line, had goosebumps running down our spines. And the man barely had time to jump away as if scalded. Some local, that is, Chelyabinsk fishermen, claim that there is pike perch on Treustan.

But I never caught him there. There is a lot of perch and there is a lot of large crucian carp, there is a little yellow, a lot of white, there is a lot of cheese and they are specially stocked. BUT I DIDN’T CATCH Pike-perch THERE!

So, in case it’s impossible to travel far, how can I get there and what do you recommend taking with me besides a spinning rod? See the fishing forecast for other fish species: Look for pike perch in the deep parts of the reservoir. Each fishing season has its own characteristics that must be taken into account in order to catch prey. You need to know the features of each of them so as not to return home empty-handed. In September, daylight hours decrease significantly and it begins to get colder. At this time, the weather is very changeable, one day the sun can shine and it can be warm, and the next it can rain and become much colder. In September, it is worth looking for prey in shallow water, especially if the weather is warm and sunny. When the water temperature drops significantly, you should look for carp, roach, ide, asp and roach at depth. Catfish and pike also hide in deeper places.

    • Almost all species begin to eat in autumn, so they are not very selective in food, they sweep away everything they can find. With the onset of October, all the prey tries to move closer to the wintering areas, into deep holes. Sometimes in the evening you can see circles on the water from walking fish. And the predators' gluttony continues, they try to gain more fat before wintering. Pike, perch and pike perch are very good to catch.

They will take almost any bait. Burbot itself can be caught using live bait. Burbot generally tries to look for food in cold weather, since it cannot stand the heat. It is caught on fry. October is considered the best month for hunting predators. Fishermen use spinners, spinning rods, girders, and donks for fishing.

    Fishing spots

On Agidel, the lower reaches are considered the most interesting in terms of fishing - where the channel is deep with pronounced underwater relief and a fairly numerous ichthyofauna. However, very successful fishing is also possible in other places.

Conventionally, the river can be divided into 6 sections:

    1. The very upper reaches - from the source to the mouth of the Big Avnyar. Here the river is a narrow, shallow watercourse running through a swampy lowland. This area is of little interest in terms of fishing. The ichthyofauna is represented by minnows, char and, according to some information, grayling (listed in the Red Book of the region).
    2. The upper reaches from the mouth of the Bolshoy Avnyar to the Beloretsk pond - the ichthyofauna in this area is replenished with species such as gudgeon, bleak, and roach. Closer to the place where the river flows into the pond, perch and pike can be caught, and in deep water - bream.
    3. The upper reaches from the dam of the Beloretsk pond to the Yumaguzinsky reservoir is a rather interesting area in terms of fishing, where the following fish are caught: bleak (notable for its particular fat content), medium and large roach, chub, bream, silver crucian carp (quite common along the river, noted even in the upper part of the site - not far from Beloretsk). Predatory fish include perch, catfish, and pike; closer to the reservoir - where the depth of the river noticeably increases - pike perch is found. There is also Red Book taimen, which is prohibited from catching. In some tributaries of the river there is also a very rare brook trout, also listed in the Red Book.
    4. The middle course is from the Yumaguzinsky reservoir to the mouth of the Ufa. Here the river gradually begins to show a flat character: it becomes calmer, meanders, and forms oxbow lakes. The ichthyofauna is also changing somewhat - species that prefer clean and cold water are giving way to more unpretentious fish. The main catches of fishermen here are: roach, bream, ide. Lots of bleak. Among the predators caught are perch, pike perch, chub, asp, catfish (usually small specimens weighing no more than 5 kg), and pike. In the lower part of the site there is a sterlet listed in the Red Book.
    5. The lower reaches - from the confluence with the Ufa to the mouth (in this area there are places where fishing is prohibited, more details in the next paragraph). Fish species such as white-eye and bluegill appear. Closer to the mouth, rudd and sprat are found, and cases of carp being caught here are also known. In the lower reaches of the Belaya there is a sedentary form of Russian sturgeon (it is in the Red Book, prohibited from catching). According to some information, there is sturgeon in the area of the Ufa mouth. Typically, fishermen’s catches include roach (medium and large), bream, ide; predators include pike, asp, catfish, pike perch, perch (including quite decent ones), and somewhat less commonly, chub (located at the mouths of some tributaries) . Fish such as saberfish are also caught in the lower reaches.
    6. IMPORTANT: areas on the Belaya River where fishing is prohibited are located in the lower reaches, in places where there are wintering pits in the riverbed. There are only two of them: in the Ufa district - from the village of Krasny Yar to the village of Solyonaya Gora, as well as from the Yulduzovsky water intake in the Ilishevsky district, to the border of the village of Angasyak, Dyurtyulinsky district.

    Fishing Features

Fishing on the Belaya River is not particularly difficult. The most popular tackle used by local fishermen is a bottom fishing rod; spinning is no less popular, especially in places where predators are concentrated - asp or pike.

    Vedenovsky Pond

Carp, silver carp, grass carp, crucian carp, catfish and other species of fish are bred on Vedenovsky Pond. Some of the fishermen wrote that they went there to no avail. Others say that they caught carp (from 3 to 5 kg and even up to 10 kg!), crucian carp and perch. We caught them using corn, peas, pearl barley and pea dough. They say that carp and crucian carp bite on maggots, corn and worms. The running tackle is “donka”.

Fishing fee – 350 rubles/day and 500 rubles/day per person. It was. But prices for the current year need to be clarified. In an interview, the owner of the Vedenovsky pond said that the price does not depend on the catch and fishing gear.
