Fishing in Altai: best places and reviews

The main hobby of Barnaul residents and residents of cities and villages located in the vicinity of Barnaul is fishing. There are really places to fish in this area, so only the laziest don’t pick up fishing rods. Moreover, catching fish is often much easier than choosing a place for fishing, because there are a lot of rivers and lakes in the Altai Territory. And in all of them there is fish, in large quantities. It’s not for nothing that fishermen come here to Western Siberia even from Moscow itself, covering a distance of almost 3.5 thousand kilometers. Here they are guaranteed to have an unforgettable experience.

Fishing in Barnaul - overview of the region

Fishing in Barnaul and its environs is primarily associated with rivers, of which there are more than 17 thousand. About 95% of them are full-fledged water arteries at least 10 kilometers long. The total length of the rivers of the Altai Territory is 51,004 kilometers. The main object of the fishing “pilgrimage” is the Ob, one of the largest Russian rivers, formed by the confluence of the Biya and Katun. Its tributaries Alei, Northern Sosva, Bolshoi Yugan, Chumysh, Chulym and Charysh are no less popular among the fishing fraternity.

River
There are also many lakes around Barnaul, almost 11 thousand. The largest of them, namely Bolshoye Topolnoe, Kulundinskoye, Gorkoye, Bolshoye Yarovoye and Kuchukskoye, are located in the steppe zone. The area of most of the rest, including in mountainous areas, exceeds 1 sq. km.

With such a volume of “water”, fishing in these places cannot be bad. The aquatic biological resources of the region are represented by 35 different species of fish, but, unfortunately, most of them are listed in the Red Book of the Russian Federation. Catching such species is either prohibited or limited, so before throwing gear on a particular body of water, you need to familiarize yourself with the fishing rules established in the region.

What kind of fish are there?

Reservoirs located in flat areas are inhabited by pike, perch, ide, pike perch, chebak, dace, tench and two types of crucian carp, gold and silver. In rivers and large flowing lakes there are also less common species: ruffe, gudgeon, lake and river minnow. Even less common are the spiny sculpin, sculpin goby and lamprey. They have no commercial significance and are of interest only to individual float fishing enthusiasts. The most valuable in the region are considered to be nelma, sterlet and the king fish - sturgeon. In the Ob, the latter once grew to enormous sizes and gained a weight of 30 kg, but now such specimens are no longer found.

Carp
In the cold rivers of the Altai region there are taimen and grayling, in the lakes - whitefish, in high mountain reservoirs - ottomans (as many as three varieties). In culinary terms, of the listed species, the most interesting is grayling, the meat of which has unsurpassed taste characteristics.

Bream, carp and its wild relative carp have acclimatized in numerous fresh lakes of the steppe. Fish farms that breed carp constantly stock their reservoirs with fish to maintain the population, so fishing there is always productive. True, you have to pay for the opportunity to experience the pleasure of fighting with a large and strong fish.

On free public reservoirs things are somewhat worse. The local population practices active fishing with nets, which mainly catch large fish. Therefore, supporters of sport fishing come across trophies less and less often. Although representatives of environmental authorities are fighting this phenomenon, net fish continue to cause serious damage to fish stocks.

What kind of fish can you catch on the Ob?

If we talk about what types of fish live in a given water area, then it will be easier to list those fresh “inhabitants” that are not there.

Thus, the river, without the slightest exaggeration, includes an incredibly large number of fish, the most active of which are considered to be:

  • Yelets;
  • Zander;
  • Burbot;
  • Ide;
  • Pike;
  • Roach;
  • crucian carp;
  • Perch;
  • Bream;

In addition to the above list of the most common inhabitants of the river, one cannot fail to note those fish species that are considered the most rare and valuable:

  • Sturgeon;
  • Chirom;
  • Muxon;
  • Whitefish;
  • Sterlet;
  • Nelma;

Effective fishing gear

The choice of gear depends on what kind of fish the angler is targeting. Let's start with predatory species. The main predator of the Altai plains and foothills is pike. In the Ob and many of its tributaries there are specimens weighing 10 kg or more. Such individuals respond well to jerkbaits and large silicone lures that are fashionable today (up to 30 cm), so you will need a powerful spinning rod with an appropriate reel and a reliable cord. The placement of silicone fish and wobblers is carried out in the bottom horizon, where the toothy “monsters” are mainly hidden in snags and stones.

Spinning in hand
Pike perch is another common predator in Altai, which requires a spinning rod to catch. Like pike, it is caught using jig baits and wobblers. Record specimens were caught using vibrating tails 15-20 cm long.

The most numerous of the predatory species is considered to be perch, which has settled in almost all rivers and lakes of the region, except for the high-mountain ones. Small and medium-sized perch can be successfully caught in the coastal zone with a fishing rod using a worm as a bait. Humpback whales prefer to stay away from the shore, so they can only be reached by boat. Spinning tackle and several twisters of different sizes and colors will help you find and “thin out” the discovered flock.

Another popular species among Barnaul fishermen is the Siberian roach or chebak, as it is called here. You can catch a chebak using a feeder or a float rod, the main thing is to find the place where it accumulates. The baits for this kind of fishing are dung worms, bark beetle larvae, maggots; in the warm season, baits of plant origin work well. When catching chebak, the by-catch often includes dace, but this small fish is not of particular interest; it can only be used as live bait.

Carp and its domesticated brother the carp were once rare in Western Siberia, but are now abundant in ponds and lakes along the upper reaches of the Ob River. They feel great not only on well-groomed plateaus, but also in many “wild” reservoirs. As in other regions, in Barnaul these giants (the weight of caught individuals reaches 20 kg) are caught mainly using bottom gear.

Donkeys on the shore
Visiting fishermen are chasing taimen. This fish is caught in cool, fast-flowing rivers using powerful spinning gear. There are known cases of catching 50-kilogram giants, so the spinning rod for taimen must be very strong, as, in fact, its equipment. Even if you are not lucky enough to catch taimen, the by-catch will definitely include lenok or pike.

A popular representative of the Altai ichthyofauna is the handsome grayling, which has an unusual dorsal fin that looks like a flag. This is not his only advantage. Grayling is very tasty, no matter how it is prepared. Fishermen are willing to spend hours jumping over boulders on the banks of mountain rivers in order to catch several specimens of this fish. It’s difficult to say which tackle is the best for this type of fishing; grayling can be caught with equal success using a float, lure, or fly fishing. They don’t bother too much with rigs; this voracious predator is not afraid of either large hooks or thick fishing lines.

Paid fishing in Barnaul and the surrounding area

On paid reservoirs you can not only catch fish, but also relax in comfort. There are plenty of these in the Altai Territory. They can be divided into two categories: some pay directly for fishing, others pay for the services provided. Where do supporters of comfortable fishing most often go? We list the most visited paid reservoirs:

Lake Teletskoye

No less popular place among tourists and travelers. It is one of the largest reservoirs in this region, and its length reaches 80 km. The reservoir boasts the purest water, an amazingly beautiful coastline and, of course, a variety of fish. There are more than 14 species in these waters. People come here for pike, taimen, perch, etc.

Fishing on Lake Teletskoye

This deep-water lake is the largest in the Altai Territory , its length is more than 80 kilometers. The water in the lake is very clean, and the coastline is dotted with forests. Winter fishing is very popular. The fact is that on the southern side the reservoir does not freeze and is not covered with ice.

Best Free Fishing Spots

The choice for those who do not want to fish “for money” is huge. There are many such places; whoever wants to go fishing there in Barnaul. From the impressive list, we can highlight several of the most fishy reservoirs:

  • mountain river
    The Charysh River consists of continuous rifts and rapids, but this does not stop spinners. In its waters they try to catch perch, pike, pike perch, grayling, burbot, taimen and, I must say, not without success. For example, in spring and late autumn, some lucky people manage to catch up to fifty pikes per day. Everything is fine with peaceful fish in Charysh, bream weighing up to a kilogram is biting, a decent sized sorog, and in some areas there are crucian carp. You can count on a good bite near the village of Charyshskoye, and fishing near Sentelek is almost always productive.

  • Losikha is a river in the Altai Territory, which surprises with the abundance of fish despite its modest size (maximum width - 30 m, maximum depth - 4 m). The place where it connects with the Ob River is especially popular among fishermen. Here, on the banks overgrown with willow grass, floaters, feeders and spinning fishermen coexist peacefully. Fishing on Losikhe in Barnaul is good not only for large catches, but also for its close location to the city. For this reason, on weekends the river experiences severe fishing pressure, however, there is enough fish for everyone.
  • Ursul
    The Ursul River is one of the longest waterways in the region, which is home to different species of fish, and in large numbers. In it you can equally successfully catch both the ubiquitous perch and the beautiful grayling. There are burbot, pike perch, and ide. If you are lucky, a real fighter will “sit” on the hook - taimen. He will give a serious exam on fishing skills and check how strong the fisherman’s nervous system is.

  • Sumula is a mountain river with a complex landscape that is not easy to adapt to. Often you have to fish from steep cliffs, which is not very convenient. Those who are not deterred by this successfully catch predators using spinning rods: pike, grayling, lenok, large taimen. True, in such conditions it is not always possible to pull the latter out of the water. But it’s okay, because we go to reservoirs primarily for sensations, and they are guaranteed on Sumult.
  • River in the mountains
    The Chulyshman River is also famous for its excellent fishing. A wide variety of fish are caught, including Siberian char and Altai osman. Of particular interest to the fishing fraternity is the delta of this river and its channels, where grayling bite well. In autumn, when a hungry predator swims in the upper horizons and grabs everything that moves, even a person who has picked up fishing tackle for the first time can catch it.

Places for the best fishing on the Ob

A wide range of towns and small hamlets located along the Ob River allows a large number of citizens who want to go fishing to settle in good places that have already been prepared and “equipped” by other fishermen and local residents.

In addition to comfort, the following places also include a high probability of catching fish by an angler:

  • Verkh-Suzun is a small village located on the right bank of the river. In this place, according to reviews, you can catch carp, crucian carp, pike, perch and bream. If you go a little higher upstream (behind the village on the right side), you can bring home a lot of ide, which is often caught with a spinning rod. Among other things, it is worth saying that fishing in the territory of this locality and on the river as a whole is completely free;
  • Kudryashevsky is a village located near the regional center of Novosibirsk, which cannot but be considered good news for urban fishermen. The best, truly “fishing” places are located near Bear Island. Fauna such as crucian carp, pike, roach and perch can be caught;
  • Ilyich is a village that originates near Barnaul. Local residents claim that an excellent bite can most often be observed in the area of the so-called Dam. Regarding what kind of inhabitants this water area is inhabited, it is noted that here you can easily catch bream, crucian carp and ruffe;

Fishing rules and prohibitions

Barnaul and its surroundings have their own fishing bans, including spawning. In addition to this, there are a number of other restrictions that fishermen should be aware of. What can't you do? Prohibited:

In addition, it should be remembered that taimen, nelma, peled and some other representatives of the ichthyofauna are listed in the Red Book of the Russian Federation. Of course, many people don’t care about this, but at least the young of these species can be released. Otherwise, our children will only be left with “home fishing” using fishing simulators.

The best time for fishing on the Ob

Considering the fact that the reservoir includes a lot of fish, both heat-loving and cold-loving, it is impossible to say that some time of the year is less or more fruitful in terms of catch and bite.

  • Spring: This period of the year on the river begins only in the month of April, when the ice has completely melted. At first, the activity of the fish can be understood due to the “winter hunger strike”, and after that, the matter is clear - spawning alternates;
  • Summer:
      Until the end of June, freshwater inhabitants are extremely active due to the aforementioned spawning. Towards the end of summer, fishing is also active, during which you can catch a lot of fish with caviar;
  • Autumn:
      Some argue that in the fall the fauna residents are not as active as before, which is understandable. Some say that in the fall the season for fishing with spinning rods for such species as ide, sturgeon, pike and perch just opens;
  • Winter:
      This period is characterized by frosts and strong winds. But, even in such unfavorable weather, you can observe a stable bite of pike, carp and crucian carp;
