The time it takes for the fish to start biting is determined mainly by the quality of the top and how well it is compressed.

The rate at which the food breaks down into pieces is also important. Sometimes it happens that a fish gets hooked within 5 minutes, but this happens extremely rarely when a fisherman throws the tackle right under its nose.

However, most often this procedure takes more than 10 minutes. Therefore, anglers usually fish with several fishing rods at once, which are equipped with top rods.

Features of fishing on the top

Carp loves the smell of oilseeds so much that they swim to the top of the tree from afar. In addition, bait can be used to ensure a good bite. Corn, wheat or peas are suitable for these purposes.

Once in the water, the dust begins to disintegrate and spread the aroma throughout the reservoir. The carp senses it and comes to the fishing spot. It is important to remember that complete dissolution of the bait takes no more than 3 hours. After this time period, the compressed cake will need to be replaced. Fish, attracted by the smell, usually begin to carefully eat food from the corners of the installed structure, but sooner or later they get hooked. At this moment, the clutch is activated, and the fishing line begins to move. The fisherman must hook and catch the fish. To avoid missing the bite time, constant monitoring of the rod is required. In most cases, the carp will self-hatch with the lip, so the angler only needs to pull out his prey without tearing the tissues and causing the prey to escape. If you understand that a fairly large individual is biting, then use a landing net.

Fishing for carp on the top (makushatnik)

Many fishermen practice fishing on the makushatnik. You can successfully catch crucian carp, roach, rudd, including carp using compressed cake. This fishing method is not considered sportive, but it is one of the most effective.

Makushatnik is waste from the production of oilseed crops, such as sunflower, pressed into briquettes. The fishing technique is very simple, but most importantly, it does not require homemade bait mixtures, which is very important. Plus, the makushatnik tackle is quite easy to install and does not require any special fishing equipment. This fishing technique allows even inexperienced anglers to come home from fishing with fish.

Operating principle

The tackle with the cube is thrown into the water.

The carp, having swallowed the hook, tries to hide. It is at this moment that you should hook and start fishing for carp.

Makukha can be purchased at the market. There they sell it in large circles, up to 40cm in diameter. Before buying it, you should make sure that it is fresh and does not emit aromas of spoilage.

The consistency of the top, or rather, its density can be different. A harder top is more suitable for fishing in currents, while a less hard top can be used for fishing in still water. The cubes should be stored in a glass jar with a screw top. The cubes are sprinkled with crumbs formed after slicing.

Preparing gear for makushatnik

It is unlikely that you will be able to buy ready-made tackle in a store, but assembling it yourself, from separately purchased elements, will not be difficult. You can find several design solutions for the makushatka, which belong to individual fishermen. They all have structural differences, but the principle of application is the same. In this case, there is a huge field for experimentation. By choosing this path you can get gear that has unique capabilities.

A rod for a spinner must be able to withstand the weight of the spinner and the weight of the carp, which can be quite significant. Therefore, the rod must be stiff. The length of the rod is selected within 4 meters or more.
The reel is also chosen to be powerful, always inertia-free, size 3000-4000, in order to accommodate a sufficient amount of fishing line.
The thickness of the fishing line is selected depending on the size of the carp in the pond. The diameter can be in the range of 0.25-0.45mm, and the length of the fishing line can be at least 150m.
Carp hooks are used, with a long shank, sizes No. 6-No. 8.
The choice of sinker plays a huge role, since you have to fish in currents or in still water. In currents, dovetail or horseshoe type sinkers are mainly used. When fishing in still water, it is possible to use sinkers of any shape.

If you plan to catch small carp, weighing no more than 2 kg, then ordinary, not so powerful fishing rods will do. At the same time, you should seriously approach the issue of choosing fishing line. As a rule, monofilament is used to catch carp, as it tends to stretch and dampen the jerks of the fish. This can be an ordinary fly fishing rod, 4-6 meters long, equipped with a spinning reel.

The creation of a fishing gear does not end with one makushatnik. To place the bait in the right place and then remove a large trophy from the water, you need to assemble reliable tackle, which consists of several elements:

rod or reel;
coil;
fishing line;
top (sinker, hooks).

Each component must have sufficient strength to fish for large and strong fish, so you should not ignore or take the proposed recommendations lightly.

Rod selection

When fishing for carp in small and medium-sized reservoirs, where the cast is made no further than 50–60 m, super-heavy feeder rods 4 meters long with a test weight of over 42 grams are used. On large reservoirs, when it is necessary to cast the equipment over a hundred meters, the length of the rod is chosen to be 5–6 m.

If you plan to fish on a river and the fishing spot is located a few meters from the shore, you can do without a rod and reel at all. The line is wound onto the reel. Before casting, the required amount is carefully lowered (so as not to get confused), and the casting itself is done by hand. After this, the reel is secured to the shore.

Coil

Preference should be given to a spinning reel. It should be powerful enough and have a spool of 4–5 thousand in size, capable of holding 100 meters of fishing line. Such a reserve is necessary for long casting, as well as in case of catching a large carp that can pull several meters of line from the spool during fishing.

The friction mechanism must not be “tightened”. It is adjusted for impact and jerk, so that during the process of hooking and retrieving fish, the line does not succumb to high tension or sudden loads that can break it. A properly configured clutch will be able to absorb excess stress.

The choice of fishing line is based on the size of the carp living in a particular body of water. The optimal solution is monofilament: it can stretch without losing its strength properties, which is very important when working with heavy weights.

A product with a thickness of 0.35-0.45 mm is selected. If catching specimens over 2-3 kg is not expected, you can get by with a diameter of 0.25 mm. The length should be min. 100 to 150 m.

Sinker and hooks

When fishing in bodies of water with no current, the shape of the load is not particularly important. It can be round, rectangular, teardrop-shaped. The weight of the load remains fundamental, which should allow the equipment to be sent over a given distance.

On rivers, preference is given to the shape of a sinker in the form of a “swallowtail” or a horseshoe. It is desirable that it be of the sliding type.

Carp hooks are installed at the discretion of the angler. A hook that is too small can cause a large fish to escape, while a hook that is too large can result in a lack of bites. Recommended size is No. 8.

Installation of the top cover

To assemble a makushatnik, you must have the following components:

Lead sinker of the appropriate shape.
Wire.
Elastic bands – 2 pcs.
Monoline, diameter 0.25-0.4mm.
Hooks – 2 or 4 pcs.
Pressed bars of sunflower cake.

Assembling the tackle on your own is not very difficult and quite accessible, you just need to show a little effort.

A thin lead plate is wound across the wire. In this case, small rings are formed at both ends.
The square of topcoat is held in place with rubber bands. The elastic bands should be black to blend in with the crown.
A block of makukha is placed on a metal plate and secured with rubber bands. The size of the block must correspond to the size of the metal base.
A swivel is attached to one of the wire rings.
Leashes with hooks, the tips of which are directed downwards, are attached to the other ring. When the top of the head is assembled, the hooks are hidden in the top of the head so that the carp does not notice them prematurely.

Varieties of makushatniks

The makushatnik or press cake can be dull and sliding. The first option is considered basic and classic, from which it is recommended to master this equipment. The second mounting method is more difficult to assemble and configure, but it has better sensitivity, and therefore is more effective when hunting cautious large and passive fish.

Blind equipment

The basis of blind installation is a lead weight. It has a flat shape, usually in the form of a rectangular plate. On one side, the main fishing line is tied to it. The weight of the load is selected according to fishing conditions and can be 30–120 grams.

The fisherman cuts off a plate-sized block of topcoat. Secure it with two or three rubber bands. In the winding ring on the sinker we attach leashes made of braided fishing line with a diameter of 0.1–0.12 mm. Their length is 5–15 cm, the number depends on the activity of the carp, its size, the nature of the bottom and the depth at the fishing site, maybe 1–2, maximum 7–8 pieces.

We tie single hooks to the free ends of the leash. It is advisable to choose specialized carp models with a short rounded forearm. Using a needle, awl or thin drill, we make holes in the cake where we hide the singles.

We pay attention to the quality of fixation of the crown block to the lead plate. It must be pressed tightly against the plane of the load, otherwise it may jump out at the moment of casting or hitting the water. When attaching hooks to the bait, we install several in its corners, since the carp begins to suck the cake from them.

Sliding equipment

Installation with a sliding sinker is relevant when fishing for carp in the current and on a soft muddy bottom, when the equipment can fall into the ground. To make it you will need:

sliding lead weight, often in the shape of a horseshoe;
bead-shaped limiters;
leashes made of braided cord;
single hooks.

The assembly of the sliding equipment begins with fixing the first limiter. Then a sliding sinker and a second stopper are put on. The free stroke length of the load can be 15–50 cm, depending on the activity of the fish, the nature and structure of the soil in the fishing area.

A loop is made from the free end of the main line. A hole is drilled in the cake block and a fishing line is threaded through. The crown is brought to the bottom stopper. All that remains is to tie the leashes to the loop, and to them the hooks, which are hidden in the bait, similar to a blind rig.

Makushatnik with sliding weight

You can consider another version of the makushatnik, which uses a sliding weight.

A stopper is installed on the main line, usually monofilament, a sinker is put on, and then another stopper is placed.
A hole should be drilled in the cube of sunflower cake through which a loop with a fishing line on which the clip is attached is pulled.
Leashes with hooks are attached to the loop of the main line.
Slots are made in the corners of the pressed cube, in which hooks are hidden, the stings of which are directed outward.

It should be noted that there should be no foreign odors coming from the pressed macadamia, especially the odors of diaper rash. The tackle should be collected directly near the reservoir so that the pressed cubes cannot lose their aromatic properties.

Choosing a fishing spot

Carp constantly migrate across the pond in search of food. At the same time, he will never be in a place where there is no food. Its favorite places are holes, drops and edges, as well as thickets of reeds and other vegetation. It may be in an area with a clean bottom, where you can always dig something and profit. As a rule, it prefers to be at depths of 2 meters or more. It is advisable to choose clean places, without the presence of obstructed trees and snags. The carp, having grabbed the bait, will try to go with it into the depths, or even better into a snag. Therefore, there is no point in delaying hooking and fishing.

You should also not choose areas with silt, as the bait can get into the silt and the carp will not notice it.

It is better to catch carp on the top of the fish after lunch, in the late afternoon.
It is more convenient to catch carp and other fish during the day, since all the gear is in sight and there are no problems with fishing.
At night, carp can be caught more readily, and serious specimens may be caught.
For night fishing, you should prepare in advance and remove all unnecessary items from the fishing spot. These can be stones, logs, sticks, etc.

Technique for catching carp with a fishing rod

Carp picks up odors from a great distance, so they will certainly respond to the aroma of sunflower cake. For greater efficiency, it is better to feed the fishing spot in advance. For this purpose, bait is prepared, which should contain whole grains of corn, wheat or peas. Such large fractions can keep the carp at the biting point.

After the tackle has been fully prepared and the cube made from macaque has been strengthened, it is thrown into the water. After about 2-3 hours, the cube dissolves under the influence of water. This means that after this time the makukha cube should be replaced with a new one. As soon as the carp smells the smell of corn, it will immediately swim up to the cube and begin to taste it. Carp works like a vacuum cleaner: it sucks in food along with foreign objects and then separates them into edible and non-edible components. Thus, he will be able to suck in the hook along with the crown. When you try to swallow it, the hook will certainly get caught on the lip.

The fisherman's task is to carefully land the fish. Carp can be killed by releasing the line tension from time to time. It is much easier to catch a tired carp. A fisherman must have a landing net in his arsenal, otherwise it is unlikely that he will be able to catch a large specimen of carp.

Choosing a place and time for fishing

When choosing a fishing spot, you should give preference to areas with a depth of up to 5 meters and a clean bottom, otherwise there is a chance of leaving the equipment on the bottom if it gets caught on snags.

The main positive features of the gear are ease of manufacture, as well as high catchability. The makushatnik is a bottom tackle, and therefore at dawn and sunset, when the carp rises to the water surface, the number of bites comes to naught.

During the day and especially at night, you can observe a greater number of bites. At night there is a chance of catching a large trophy, so you need to have a strong landing net in your arsenal. At night, you should try to move along the shore as little as possible, use lighting and make loud noises, as these actions will scare the fish away from the fishing spot and will negate all your efforts.

When it gets into the water, the makha attracts fish due to its aromatic qualities, and also spreads soggy and exfoliated particles of cake, oily “clouds” around the fishing site.

As the carp eats the bait, it gets so carried away that it grabs one of the hooks along with the top of the bait. The process of soaking and delamination of the top is quite long, so you should not wait for an instant bite after casting, but must be patient.

It is almost impossible to miss a bite; it will be visible by the sharp tension of the fishing line and the sound of the reel clutch operating. If there are no large specimens in the reservoir, then a small bell can be used as a bite alarm.

Large specimens of carp and carp have rather dense tissues on their lips, therefore the hooking must be immediate and sharp, and sharp hooks must be used when making a macho hook. All this will allow you to avoid fish runs. In order to prevent the attracted fish from leaving the fishing spot, it must be held with bait. Groundbait is also prepared from corn flour with the addition of flavorings.

A tackle with a weight made of lead in the form of a horseshoe; the top is fastened using a self-tightening loop, which is inserted through a hole drilled in a block of compressed cake. The hook is attached to the tackle using a leader material with a fastener. The advantage of this type of equipment is the ease of replacing a hook or if the need arises to add a few more leashes with hooks.
A tackle with a lead weight in the shape of a heart; the top is fastened using a self-tightening loop, which is wound around a cylindrical block of compressed cake. The leash is tied to the load using any of the knots without using a fastener. The disadvantage of this type of equipment is the loss of time required to replace the hook and it becomes necessary to make a transverse cut on the crown block to tighten the fastening loop. This type of gear is also not recommended for use on a river with strong currents.
This type of gear is made on the basis of a trempel for the use of technoplankton. By means of a swivel, the load is connected to a flexible trempel on which three hooks are attached, and subsequently a top is placed on the base of the trempel by drilling a longitudinal through hole in it. The top of the hook is fixed on the frame with a rubber cambric, through which the leash of the outermost hook is also released, to which the main fishing line is tied. Foam is placed on the hooks to give them buoyancy.
The most common type of tackle, assembled on the basis of a flat piece of lead in the form of a square with a persistent side, which will protect the top from destruction when colliding with an obstacle at the bottom. It will also provide aquaplaning due to its shape; when lifted, the load will not bury itself in the bottom, but rather will begin to rise above it. The top is attached to the base with a self-tightening loop and a rubber ring around it. The hooks are inserted into drilled holes in the top of the head.
A combined type of gear, which includes in its design an addition in the form of a ring-shaped weight with a built-in feeder for soft bait. This design allows bait to be delivered more accurately to the fishing spot, increases the suspended matter content in the water, and, accordingly, makes it more visible and attractive to fish.

Tip: You can successfully catch carp only using fresh, not dried out product.

A good poppy seed has a yellowish-black color and a pleasant smell of sunflower oil. There cannot be any mold stains or visible delaminations on it. When pressing on the block, the finger should spring slightly; overdrying or waterlogging is unacceptable.

How to prepare super-catchy carp cake yourself

Every fisherman can make a carp hook with his own hands at home. To do this, you need to purchase sunflower seeds. It is advisable to take raw, slightly dried material rather than fried. The manufacturing process for this nozzle is as follows:

Grind the seeds in a mixer or crusher. The product should have a moist, loose consistency, from which a pleasant smell of sunflower oil emanates.
Wrap the resulting mass in gauze and leave to dry at room temperature.
To form cubes you will need a press, which can be easily made from two metal plates curved to the desired shape. They are bolted together at 2–4 points.
All that remains is to place the dried workpiece in the press, tighten the bolts and leave for several hours.

As a result, we get homemade flour that is in no way inferior to the store-bought product. Moreover, fishermen can independently regulate its density, taking into account the upcoming fishing conditions.

On a note! It is better to place the finished briquettes in zip lock bags and store them in the lower compartments of the refrigerator. This way the bait will retain its original density for a long time, will not dry out, and will not lose its taste characteristics or attractive smell.
