Techniques for catching pike with spoons and the most catchy models

Spoons for pike and their varieties

The pike spinner is distinguished by its versatility and special structure. Experienced anglers use two types of spinners when fishing with spinning rods: oscillating and rotating.

Oscillating (oscillators)

Spinner spoons for pike are curved metal plates with hooks. For fishing, medium or large sized plates are usually used. For successful fishing, the color of the spinners is imitated to resemble multi-colored fish scales or small fish, sometimes with the addition of bright “fins” or flies.

Advantages of "oscillators":

  1. Efficiency (not inferior to expensive wobblers).
  2. Versatility (can be used in any reservoir for different fish).
  3. Long-distance casting of tackle (up to 70 m).

In the water, the spoons sway rhythmically from side to side, and hypnotize the pike: it mistakes the spoon for a small fish and is caught on the hook.

Rotating (turntables)

"Rotators" for pike

Rotating spoons are called spinners due to the rod around which, under the influence of water, a metal petal rotates.

Under the petal there is a weight (core) and a treble hook. This bait bears little resemblance to bait, but attracts pike due to the sound waves it creates by rotation.

It is good to use bright pinwheels in muddy water, and dark ones in clear water.

Spinnerbaits

Another non-hooking device, but this time intended for underwater wiring, not surface wiring. It is a small rocker, on one wing of which a petal is attached, like on a turntable, and on the other there is a hook with a weight, covered with a bundle of silicone fibers. This type of bait is not very common. When retrieving, the bait is positioned with the weight down and the blade up. Clings to the equipment by the middle ring on the bend. The petal oscillates when playing, attracting the pike, and the toothy one usually grabs the silicone washcloth on the hook.

Anglers who actively use pike spinnerbaits claim that this is a very catchy bait for the toothy predator. It passes underwater thickets and mud well without catching them. And pike loves such places. Both trophy pike and small grass fish take spinnerbaits, and you can make it yourself at home or find it in any fishing store, as well as on Aliexpress.

In addition to Croatian eggs, ducklings and spinnerbaits, there are several more catchy unhooked baits for pike

Spinnerbait

Unhooked

Non-hooking ones come in different colors and types. A distinctive feature of the bait is a hook (single or double), the tip of which is protected from snagging by a magnet or a metal tendril/tendrils. Its sting opens only at the moment of attack.

Non-hooking fishing rods are used for catching pike in reservoirs with an abundance of algae, organic debris (branches, snags) or stones.

Pike streamers

A streamer is a type of large, heavy fly used in fly fishing. In a spinning rod for pike, you need an even larger fly - a whole panicle of wool or fur. It is difficult to find a large pike streamer for spinning on sale - they are used by a narrow group of anglers when searching for trophy pike when the predator refuses to take traditional baits.

These baits work, and on large pike – and that’s a fact. Retrieving is a slow pull, in which the fur or wool flutters sluggishly in the water, depicting a fairly large living creature, which a large pike likes to pick up. This type of bait is difficult to find in the store, but you can make it yourself or to order.

How to properly catch pike with a spoon

Depending on the time of year, day, water temperature and other factors, the correct way to catch a spotted predator with different lures is applicable to the fishing conditions. Let's look at the main types of wiring for oscillating and rotating spoons.

Posting an oscillating spoon to a pike

Posting an oscillating spinner is carried out in 3 options:

  1. Uniform wiring.
  2. Wavy wiring.
  3. A fall.

When driven evenly, the spinner may fluctuate slightly. This game is applicable only in open water, with a flat bottom topography. Wavy, or uneven, wiring requires the skill of the angler. It's more effective. It is good to carry out the fall with large models of spoons, at great depths, where the predator will certainly notice the bright bait. The fall can be supplemented with wavy fluctuations.

About

Spinners

Compared to an oscillating lure, a rotating lure has a comparatively greater final fishing result when cast correctly. Retrieving using rotating spinners is carried out at a calm pace.

The fisherman must take a responsible approach to the choice of this type of bait, since the outcome of the fishing directly depends on it. When looking closely at a spinner, pay attention to its size. For catching pike at shallow depths and in the coastal zone, rotating spoons No. 3 are suitable.

How to remove pike from a spoon

The mouth of a pike is a real trap, capable of easily collapsing and swallowing “prey”, in this case a spinner.

You can remove pike from a spoon in the following ways:

  • carefully insert your hand into the mouth and quickly remove the bait. In this case, it is better to keep the mouth open so that the “trap” does not slam shut on the hand;
  • use a fishing clamp (surgical scissors) or pliers if the lure sits deep.

The safest way to remove bait from a pike's mouth is with a yawner (a large pin with a clip for securing the fish's mouth).

Types of hooks and types of their fastening

The catchability of the spinner is largely influenced by the characteristics of the hook:

  • Single hooks are suitable for small and medium-sized baits. Firstly, they will not disturb the weight distribution, so the play of the spinners looks more natural. Secondly, a single is easier and quicker to retrieve, which means you're less likely to miss a school while you're fumbling with one bass you've caught.
  • For large spinners, doubles and tees are used.

Installation of hooks depends on the type and model of bait. Hooks can be soldered into the body of the spoon, attached to a chain or ring. The advantage of the latter methods is that they create an additional game, which can be made even more noticeable by wrapping the hook with colored thread. However, this does not always work - often the perch takes it on a simple bare hook. Therefore, have in your arsenal different types of spinners with different types of hook fastening:

  • During the period of activity, the striped predator also works well on rigidly fixed hooks.

When using spinners with soldered hooks, keep in mind that there must be a distance of at least 4 mm between the plane of the bait and the sting. Otherwise, the bites will be empty.

It would not be amiss to tie a 3-5 cm leash with an additional hook onto which the bloodworm is attached to the main fishing line, not far from the place where the spinner is attached. The game of the spinner in this case will be similar to the attempt of a fry to grab prey. And the perch may try to get ahead of the “fry” and sit on an additional hook.

The color of the spinner, the type, the depth of fishing are minor nuances when fishing for pike. It all depends on the skill of the fisherman. The higher it is, the greater the chances of catching a real trophy. Well, as you gain experience, you will have your own most catchy lures for pike, which will work great and bring more than one trophy specimen.

Pike fishing with spinning rod

Let’s talk right away - there is no better and working bait. It’s not worth going to the store in search of a philosophical imba that you threw and caught. This is the wrong way. There are many types of spinning baits for pike. Each of them contains features, requirements for gear and fishing conditions. The choice of bait is based on the tactics and characteristics of fishing, personal preferences in the method - jig, twitching, trolling, or a little bit of both. On an overgrown pond, the tactics are one, and on a deep reservoir, another.

They say that pike are indiscriminate - this is far from true. The toothy one grabs everything that moves. However, such periods are rare. The rest of the time, when fishing for pike with a spinning rod, an angler needs to use maximum ingenuity to lure out the predator and provoke an attack.

You need to treat this as a system, which includes the conditions of the reservoir, time, the spinning rod itself with equipment, and pike baits. The result of the correct combination of these factors is the capture of pike. Both old spoons and atoms work, as well as wobblers with jigs - each is better or worse in certain conditions. And which ones specifically – we’ll look at them further.

Disadvantages of oscillating spinners

spoons for pike

  • Oscillating spoons do not allow you to effectively fish all water horizons in a reservoir. Oscillating spoons are designed for fishing in the water column. You cannot fish with a spoon on the surface of the water, like a popper, or in the area directly at the bottom, like with silicone baits on jig heads.
  • Oscillating lures are cheaper than wobblers, but more expensive than silicone baits. For many anglers this is of significant importance.
  • Oscillating lures without hooks allow you to fish in difficult places: among thickets of underwater vegetation and snags, but in such places the use of non-hooking rigs with silicone baits (Texas, Carolina, etc.) can be more effective.
