Fantasies often take us away from reality. “Advanced” fishermen attributed miracles to the first float suits. They say that you will fall into a wormwood and jump out of it without getting your feet wet. With the acquisition of real experience, they increasingly wanted the “floats” to breathe well. Back then it was all science fiction. Years have passed. What changed?

Nowadays, sealed, breathable float suits with a multilayer Gore-Tex membrane are actually produced. You can swim in them even in the ice hole, even in the ocean. However, out of the millions of fishermen in our country, only dozens have such clothing. The main reason is the astronomical cost. It encourages even wealthy people to find out what they can buy for that kind of money.

And here a number of subtleties are revealed. Firstly, such a suit is not worn; it is worn almost like a spacesuit, which is not always convenient. Secondly, the breathing properties, although very high, are by no means what they were imagined to be. Third, the pant legs extend into neoprene socks. They do not get wet, but they also do not have a steam outlet, which leads to wet feet. And drying socks after fishing is a separate issue.

So, willy-nilly, the vast majority of fishermen settle on “utilitarian” “floats” of the middle price category. About 15 years ago these were exclusively imported suits. What to expect from a “float” when fishing?

In some situations, the suit will slow down the flow of ice water, warm it, and at the same time raise your legs to the surface, making it easier to crawl out. It’s good if you have “life savers” at hand at the right time.

The “floats” also have noticeable disadvantages that will have to be dealt with. With high activity, the fisherman will become hot even in a modern suit. This is fine. They didn’t forget to “insert” the membrane, and the fabric of the suit breathes properly. Those who doubt this can wear an OZK suit over the “float”. A few hours of experimentation will be enough.

Why is breathability lacking? Classic float suits are made with foam plates. They significantly increase buoyancy and reliably protect against strong winds, but impair gas exchange and hinder movement.

The solution is to use these products correctly. Classic “floats” are good for relatively slow-moving fishing from a boat - trolling or vertical trolling. On ice it is difficult to walk far in deep snow and drill holes. All this is not a problem for owners and passengers of snowmobiles, “pillows” and “caracats”. You don’t have to go anywhere - you can drive there, and the holes are “stamped” with a motor drill or a screwdriver.

And yet our water bodies are dominated by foot fishermen. Manufacturers are trying their best to please them. Several years ago, the solution was seen in replacing solid plates with small round pieces of polyurethane foam. Alas, the mass fisherman did not vote for this technology with their wallets. He liked the lightweight “floats” of the TRITON “Skif” type much more. There are no hard plates in them, and the suits perform their function properly, as evidenced by the video.

In fact, this is a healthy, yet quite budget-friendly compromise between conventional fishing suits and classic “floats”.
