There are only two fishing bans in the Astrakhan region: fish and crayfish. From May 16 to June 20 inclusive, a ban is in effect, according to which fishing in Astrakhan reservoirs is strictly prohibited. In addition, fishing is prohibited:
- in wintering pits
- in the Volga forbidden pre-estuary space
- in spawning grounds
Do not forget that there are year-round bans on catching the following types of fish: sturgeon, whitefish, barbel, burbot, herring (not including blackback herring), badyagi, kutum.
Things to remember
There are many spawning ridges in Astrakhan and the region; they are divided into 3 zones - upper, middle and lower. Their total area is 400 hectares, and each is on average a couple of kilometers long. There are also a lot of wintering pits - almost 60 and for good reason - Astrakhan is famous for its reservoirs - the Volga and several other rivers. The fishing here is excellent! You can also often meet underwater hunters here, because the diversity of the inhabitants of the reservoirs is amazing, and especially people come here from all over the country for carp and catfish.
It is necessary to take into account the minimum sizes of fish that can be caught. Fish catch size limits are shown in Table 1 (in cm). Each fish is measured from the end of the snout to the tail (middle rays), and sturgeon fish should be measured to the notch on the tail. Also, if you like to catch crayfish, then they are measured from the middle of the eyes to the end of the horizontal plates on the tail.

The weight of fish that is allowed to be caught per day is 10 kg. Catfish is considered separately - no more than 1 fish and 50 crayfish. The weight of one copy should not exceed 10 kg.
The Caspian seal is also prohibited, both in amateur and professional hunting (all year round!).
In the Astrakhan region, it is worth adhering not only to the spawning ban, but also to the new fishing law introduced on January 1, 2021.
Prohibited areas for fishing in the Astrakhan region
Areas prohibited for the extraction (catch) of aquatic biological resources, periods (periods) for the extraction (catch) of aquatic biological resources, types of aquatic biological resources in water bodies of the Astrakhan region are established by the Fishing Rules for the Volga-Caspian fishery basin.

Prohibited periods (periods) of extraction (catch) of aquatic biological resources in the Astrakhan region
Recreational fishing in the Astrakhan region is prohibited during the periods:
- from May 16 to June 20 - everywhere, with the exception of water bodies of fishing significance within the administrative boundaries of settlements, as well as in fishing (fishing) areas provided for the organization of recreational and sport fishing during this period;
- from April 1 to June 30 - crayfish.
Types of aquatic biological resources prohibited for extraction (catch):
- sturgeon species of fish, herring, except blackback herring, kutum, whitefish, vimba, barbel, burbot, badyaga.
Amateur and sport hunting of the Caspian seal is prohibited on the territory of the Astrakhan region.
New changes in the law
What changes in the law are worth paying attention to:
- You are allowed to take with you no more than 2 daily allowances of fish, in any form (live, salted, dried, etc.)
- if the weight of the fish you caught is about 5 kg, then you must either stop fishing and take the catch, or release it and continue fishing.
In summer, carp is very popular. You can catch fish up to 40 cm in length and weighing up to 10 kg per day within populated areas. You can fish in the city, and no one will fine you, so the entire embankment in Astrakhan is busy. You cannot fish in the surrounding areas, but in the city on the embankment you can!
Pike can be caught in quantities of no more than 5, and pike perch is allowed in 3 copies. If you are lucky and you catch a fish larger than 5 kg, then you have a choice: you either take this one fish with you and stop fishing, or release it and continue fishing again.
When you come to Astrakhan for fishing, you will enjoy it - you can fish almost everywhere, there is enough for everyone. It may be for the best that a fishing ban was recently announced due to quarantine, so there will be many times more fish. The 2021 spawning ban also occurred at the same time.
Catching carp is considered the highest skill when using a fishing rod. It is best to catch it from the evening (approximately 17:00-18:00 hours) until 11 am. Take your usual bait: crawler, corn, dung worms or pearl barley. Fans of evening fishing will be delighted, such a playful fish like carp is found in such large quantities in the waters of Astrakhan and the region that spending one day here will not be enough! After the spawning ban and quarantine, the waters are simply teeming with fish, and the fishing results will be simply excellent.
On the territory of the Astrakhan region, you can rent a room or a house and relax with your whole family or company on a fishing trip. Let it be cool!

Permitted fishing methods and gear
Means and methods of fishing that are guaranteed not to be considered illegal make up a fairly extensive list:
- Float rods of any type;
- Donks and feeders with no more than 2 hooks per rod;
- Elastic donks with only one hook per donk;
- Spoons, wobblers, flies and other baits for actively catching predatory fish using a spinning rod;
- No more than 3 shells per person, and of such a size that the sum of the lengths of three dimensions (height, width, length) does not exceed 80 cm;
- Ships, mugs, piers without restrictions;
- Fishing with quok;
- Trolling and fishing on the lane should be carried out with no more than 2 baits per boat, regardless of its capacity and number of passengers;
- Shotguns and pistols for underwater hunting without restrictions;
- Spinning and casting tackle without restrictions.
Particularly important information for those who like to install batteries from donks and knit chandeliers on feeders: the inspector will check the total number of hooks on all your fishing gear, and it should not exceed 5 units! Doubles and trebles are allowed to be used only when fishing with spinning rods and lures.
All other methods of fishing are either prohibited or will transfer you to the commercial fishing class, both options for an amateur fisherman mean a large fine.
Underwater hunters are strictly prohibited from hunting:
- In prohibited and closed areas for fishing, during periods (periods) prohibited for the extraction (catch) of aquatic biological resources;
- In places of mass and organized recreation for citizens;
- Using scuba gear and other self-contained breathing apparatus.
- It is not permitted to use special pistols and shotguns for underwater hunting from the shore, from the side of floating craft, or by wading.

Responsibility
For exceeding fishing standards, citizens may be fined in the amount of two thousand to five thousand rubles with or without confiscation of the vessel and other equipment for the extraction (catch) of aquatic biological resources (Part 2 of Article 8.37 of the Code of Administrative Offenses of the Russian Federation).
The inspector will consider criminal liability under Article 256 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation if this act is committed:
- Causing major damage;
- Using a self-propelled floating vehicle or explosives and chemicals, electric current or other prohibited weapons and methods of mass destruction of aquatic biological resources;
- In spawning areas or on migration routes to them;
- In specially protected natural areas or in an environmental disaster zone or in an environmental emergency zone.
For this you will be punished with a fine in the amount of three hundred thousand to five hundred thousand rubles or in the amount of wages for a period of two to three years, or correctional labor for up to two years, or imprisonment for the same period.
In addition, the fisherman must remember that while fishing he is within the boundaries of water protection zones of rivers, lakes, streams, canals (50-200 m from the coastline depending on the length of the watercourse), where a special regime of economic activity is in effect in order to prevent pollution of these water bodies and depletion of their waters, as well as preserving the habitat of aquatic biological resources and other objects of flora and fauna.
Within the boundaries of water protection zones, the movement and parking of vehicles (except for special vehicles) is prohibited, with the exception of their movement on roads and parking on roads and in specially equipped places with hard surfaces. Violation of this prohibition entails administrative liability in the form of a fine for citizens in the amount of three thousand to four thousand five hundred rubles (Part 1 of Article 8.42 of the Code of Administrative Offenses of the Russian Federation).
Other fishing bans by date
The ban on fishing during the spawning season is not the only fishing ban. In accordance with the Rules, it is prohibited to:
- extraction of certain types of resources at any time: sturgeon, vimba, badyaga, kutum, barbel, burbot, white fish. Hunting for the Caspian seal is completely prohibited;
- fishing in certain areas at any time: on spawning grounds in the Volga forbidden pre-estuary space, on wintering pits.
