Spinning rods for wobbler fishing

Spinner is one of the types of fishing baits for predatory fish. Let's figure out how to choose spinners and for what purposes they are suitable.

There are three types of spinners:

  • Spinner, spinner;
  • Oscillating spoon, spoon;
  • Spoons for vertical fishing, this also includes balancers.

Pinwheel
The pinwheel consists of a petal, a body and a hook. The body acts as a load and lowers the spoon to the desired depth. The petal has a special shape that allows it to rotate while tensioning and pulling the fishing line around the axis of the spinner's body.

Oscillator
Oscillator

The oscillating spoon consists of two parts: the body is a spoon-shaped petal and a hook.

Spinners for vertical fishing or vertical trolling are used mainly in winter when fishing from ice. Due to the differences between winter and summer fishing, we will consider them in another article.

All types of spinners have different colors and many modifications, with a focus on certain fishing conditions and types of fish.

Which is better, an oscillator or a turntable?

This question cannot be answered unambiguously, and is more at the discretion of the angler and the specific fishing conditions.

The spinner works well to attract aggressive and active fish. It creates a lot of noise and water flow. This type of spinner does not like slow retrieves, which is why it can give poor results in seasons with low fish activity.

This type of spinner is suitable for fishing in muddy water, where the fish does not see the bait well, and relies on its sensations received from the side line. In this case, the speed of wiring and the noise created by the petal will be an advantage.

The spinner has a slower, smoother retrieve and is more natural in the water, making it work well during periods when the bite is poor. It is easier for novice fishermen who have not yet learned how to make uniform movements, and their mistakes in the case of this spoon will give advantages.

It is better to have two types of spinners and alternate them when fishing.

Tools

  • wood hacksaw;
  • sandpaper No. 30-60 and 100;
  • wood file;
  • vice;
  • wire cutters;
  • small pliers;
  • wallpaper knife;
  • small spatula.
  1. From a piece of poplar (or other softwood hardwood), cut a rectangular piece slightly larger than the fish you want to make. In the resulting rectangle, prepare cuts for a wire frame and a load of lead tape; Depending on your needs, the cuts can be widened with a piece of rolled up medium-grit sandpaper.
  2. Then cut the fish itself out of the block. The lower part of the wobbler should be more convex, because it is this part that will be loaded. Later, you need to sand the fish using fine sandpaper.
  3. Place the wire frame in the wooden body of the wobbler. Place the wire and lead load in the structure, securing it with Poxipol glue. All uneven surfaces must be filled with acrylic wood putty.
  4. Paint the body, having previously primed it with emulsion paint. After this, carefully sand to make the surface slightly matte, then apply two coats of pearl varnish on top. The sides of the fish can be supplemented with imitation scales by painting it in two rows with the same varnish after preliminary painting. The effect should be consolidated by repeating this procedure. From the appropriate height, paint the backrest with your chosen paint using spray paints.
  5. Draw the eyes. Use emulsion paint to paint the whites. The pupils can be drawn with a waterproof marker. At this stage, leave the structure for about 12 hours so that all active chemicals such as glue, varnishes and paints stop working and become safe.
  6. After this break, you need to coat the wobbler with waterproof colorless varnish using the immersion method. Leave the structure for another day so that it dries thoroughly. After this, repeat the procedure.
  7. When the entire structure has hardened and looks reliable, you need to clean the front ring of the frame and the end of the wire protruding from behind, onto which you should attach a bead and a suitable petal. Then use pliers to press the wire so that it fits the tee fastener. Install the tee. All that remains is to increase the efficiency of our product by decorating the tee with caddis flies and an edge of peacock or chicken feathers. The structure is ready.

How to lead a spinner?

The method of guiding the spinner always depends on the fish being hunted.

Perch is the most aggressive species in the reservoirs of our latitudes. He attacks everything he sees in his territory. When fishing for perch, speed and type of fishing are not so important; in this case, you need to find its parking lot.

Pike and pike perch hunt differently and it will be more difficult to interest them. When catching these fish, a uniform retrieve speed is important. The spoon should imitate the behavior of the fish, so sudden and frequent changes in the direction of movement and speed of the bait are not allowed. The spinner must rotate constantly at any depth.

It is important to cast the bait higher than the predator's expected location. The fall of the bait always causes fear among the inhabitants of the reservoir and the sound of the fall in the water is transmitted far away.

Most predatory fish do not attack immediately; they often follow their prey for some time. Therefore, if you lead a spoon past the place where a predator is supposed to be staying, do not stop the spoon, but move it to the side and then remove it from the water. Be prepared that a predator may attack close to the shore, at the moment you take out the bait.

Spinner or wobbler? Which bait is better?

Spinner or wobbler? Which bait is better?

The variety of artificial baits for catching predatory fish is amazing. Even for an experienced fisherman, choosing a wobbler or spoon can be very difficult. A beginner runs the risk of getting confused in the names and technical characteristics of such products, but the main question that a novice fisherman may have is: what is better - a spinner or a wobbler?

Gone are the days when predators were caught exclusively with live bait. The use of artificial baits allows you to completely abandon the use of live fish, especially since in some countries there is a ban on the use of live bait as bait. Each type of artificial bait has its own advantages and disadvantages, which you need to know when choosing a method for catching predatory fish.

Spoons. These baits can differ significantly from each other. Spinners can be rotating and oscillating. Each type has its own advantages and disadvantages. For example, rotating products work well at different depths; they can be thrown a considerable distance from the shore. The petal in such products begins to rotate even with slight movement, which significantly increases the catchability of this method of fishing. Oscillating spoons with skillful placement of the bait will also allow you to get large catches of fish.

Wobblers. These baits are artificial fish made of plastic or a special type of wood. The choice of material depends on the fishing conditions, as well as on the breed of predatory fish. The advantages of such baits include their great external resemblance to natural fish that live in the reservoir. The disadvantages of wobblers are insufficient mechanical strength.

The choice of one bait or another depends on the fishing conditions. For example, zero-depth wobblers are ideal for shallow waters overgrown with aquatic plants. When using a spinner in such places, the bait will immediately sink to the bottom after casting, which will significantly increase the likelihood of it getting caught. An important advantage of wobblers over spinners is that many models are equipped with “rattles”. The cavity inside the artificial fish contains several small metal or glass balls, which create a characteristic sound during wiring. The noise effect attracts predators at a considerable distance, which increases the catchability of such bait. In clear water, when using a wobbler, there is also a greater number of bites.

Many models of such baits have not only realistic colors, but also detailed elements and details. The most catchy models are wobblers whose back has a darker shade. Good results when catching predatory fish can be obtained when fishing with “big-eyed” models of wobblers. Lures with a disproportionately large eye bring the fisherman many more bites. These are the main advantages of wobblers over spinners.

The biggest advantage of spinners is their price, which can be an order of magnitude lower than the cost of a high-quality wobbler. Spoons are made of metal, therefore they have a greater margin of safety and, under equal operating conditions, will last much longer than wobblers. For the same reason, this bait should not be additionally equipped with a weight for fishing at great depths. The spinner can be thrown over a considerable distance; its greater mass and more streamlined shape allows you to throw even small spinners in windy weather. Among the advantages that are not available to wobblers is the possibility of galvanic painting on a metal base.

If you wish, you can make a gold-plated fish even at home, but you can always order a wobbler in bulk from Opt-Fish; you can immediately take a lot of inexpensive spinners and wobblers and not be afraid of tearing them off. If fishing is carried out with rotating spoons, then the fisherman only needs to move the bait evenly, and bites from the predator will certainly follow. Such products have a petal that begins to rotate from the moment the bait begins to move in the water column. Rotation creates vibrations that attract predatory fish.

In most cases, when purchasing a wobbler or spinner, the low cost of the product should alert you. There is a high risk of purchasing low-quality products when branded goods are sold at half the cost. Unfortunately, currently the number of counterfeit products on the domestic market is very large, so you should purchase such products only from a trusted seller who has all the necessary product certificates. An indirect sign of low-quality products may be uneven paint application or peeling.

A low-quality spoon, wobbler or other artificial bait is often equipped with hooks that do not correspond to this class. Hooks may not have sharp enough tips, and the metal of the hook can be broken by hand force. Low-quality wobblers may have an incorrectly installed blade, which negatively affects the balance of the product.

Unfortunately, this drawback is discovered during fishing, but usually counterfeit products have several signs at the same time that can be used to identify a low-quality product, so if a spinner, wobbler for pike or other artificial bait has poor-quality coloring, hooks, plastic or metal, then when used It will not be possible to obtain large catches of such products.

Is it worth buying spinners from Aliexpress?

Spoons from well-known brands are quite expensive, but on Aliexpress you can buy similar spinners at prices lower than branded ones. The main problem with Chinese spinners is that they play poorly in water and are made of low-quality materials, as a result of which they quickly corrode. The same applies to the hooks that are installed on them. But if you know how to use a tool and you like making things, then this is not a bad option.
