In autumn, as the weather gets colder, the fish move to deeper areas. Often you have to fish at medium and long distances. However, there are sections of rivers and lakes where the channel zone is located close to the shore. It is not always convenient to use donks and feeders, especially if there are trees and bushes behind you. Yes, and feeders in the middle and at the end of autumn can scare away cautious roach or bream.

Many anglers opt for short rods. A very good option for pickerel with dough from 10 to 40 grams. The length of such rods usually does not exceed 3 meters. These fishing rods are comfortable for fishing at short distances, up to 35-40 meters.

How to choose a picker

The main part of the fishing rod is often double with a special plug hole. There are also folding pickers. They are convenient to take on long trips, and in general they are not very different from plug-in ones in properties.

Specialists produce fishing rods mainly from plastic. Fiberglass fishing rods are quite durable and strong. They are not expensive, which is good news.

The only negative is that they are bulky in size. Carbon fiber gear is popular in the modern market. They are also well made and are relatively small in size.

But not everyone can afford their price. The best option is composite fishing rods. They have a reasonable price that corresponds to a quality product.

Carbon fiber gear is perfect for fishing with pickerel. Since fishing with pickerel involves being active, due to their lightness, they will not cause you any inconvenience.

Multi-component bait

You don’t have to be too zealous when choosing plant bait in June. The smell of bait is secondary. It is much more important to correctly adjust its mechanical properties. When fishing with pickerel on grassy river shallows, plant bait performs only a transport function to deliver animal components to the fishing point.

Through trial and error, I chose coarse mixtures that quickly disintegrate in water. For 1 kg of bait, which needs to be pre-soaked and sifted through a sieve several times, I usually use 0.2 liters of sinking casters and the same amount of floating casters. The use of casters instead of maggots in bait is not accidental. Unlike maggots, light casters quickly separate from the bait, rise on top of the grass and attract fish that are located downstream. While sinking casters lie in a compact heap in the area of the stern “spot”.

Bait with casters is used at the initial stage of fishing. Therefore, it is not necessary to prepare it in large quantities. Of course, you can continue to feed casters further. But in order to cut off small fish, which will certainly be the first to gather in the feeding zone, after a while I prefer to switch to feeding with clean maggots. To do this, instead of a cage, a special maggot feeder is hung on a fishing line. The pace of fishing with such a feeder slows down significantly, but this is exactly what is needed: the fish will begin to collect maggots crawling out of the feeder, and, therefore, will constantly be close to the hook with the bait.

Pickerel fishing restrictions

Although this type of fishing has many advantages, it is necessary to follow a list of some restrictions and safety rules when fishing.

By the way, one of the advantages of the picker is that it can be used in any weather conditions. It will cope with various difficult places in the reservoirs and make your fishing better and more relaxed.

In fast-flowing rivers, this fishing rod is a must-have. It is more comfortable with it if there is a strong wind during fishing.

Regular fishing rods have a hard time cutting through heavy air currents. It is much more effective to fish far away. There she does not feel the presence of the fisherman and behaves calmly.

On the Internet you can see many videos of pickerel fishing.

Equipment

On pickerel I still prefer to use only monofilament lines. The casting distance of this tackle is short, about twenty turns of the reel, and there is no need to worry that the stretchability of the monofilament line may negatively affect the casting accuracy. As the main line, I most often use Browning Cenex Plummet Method Feeder Line with a breaking load of 3.7 kg ( photo 4 ). It is no coincidence that I choose such a small fishing line diameter (0.2 mm).

When fishing with such delicate gear as pickerel, it is very important to maintain maximum precision in feeding. The water puts much less pressure on a thin fishing line, which means the equipment slides less along the bottom. But you also don’t need to get carried away with too thin fishing lines. Firstly, from time to time you have to deal with large and strong fish. And secondly, in the coastal zone of the river there is always a lot of bottom debris. The main danger to the equipment is shells. When rubbing against their sharp edges, scratches will certainly form on the surface of the fishing line. And the thinner the fishing line, the more dangerous these “wounds” are for it. So a diameter of 0.18 - 0.2 mm is the golden mean.

Picker fishing from a boat

Fishing with pickerel from a boat is one of the most exciting activities. You can use it if you can’t cast your fishing rod to more fortunate places where the fish are found.

Of course, you can use a feeder in this matter, but experienced fishermen prefer a picker. In this case, its disadvantages become invisible, and its advantages only delight anglers.

A huge advantage of the picker is its light weight. Agree, it is not very convenient to install a huge fishing device in a compact boat. You can attach a feeder of any size to the boat.

Installation of equipment

The main advantage of picker lies in its delicacy. Therefore, the installation of equipment should be as delicate as possible. After going through many options, I chose the so-called in-line installation. A clip with a built-in fastener for attaching the feeder moves freely along the main line. At the bottom, the travel of the clip is limited by a silicone float stopper ( photo 5 ). Below this stopper there is either a twist from the main fishing line about 8 cm long, or a piece of feeder wire of the same length.

I like the feeder-gum installation better: the presence of an elastic insert gives me additional advantages when fishing for large fish. A leash with a length of 30 to 60 cm is attached using the “loop to loop” method. As you can see, installation is very simple and there is practically no confusion. I select the diameter of the fishing line for the leash based on fishing conditions, but usually it does not exceed 0.12 mm.

Pickerel fishing on the river

Among fishing enthusiasts, pickerel fishing on small rivers is popular. Pickerel is perfect for this kind of fishing. But everywhere you can find some inconveniences, and here too.

Picker is suitable for catching small fish. Before fishing, carefully study and analyze the area where you plan to spend a certain period of time.

There may be places in the river where, due to their shallow depth, no fish live. If fish are in spawning season, they move along the river very quickly.

It will be useful for any fisherman to study the movement of fish along the river, and then successful fishing is guaranteed to you.

Bait presentation options

Now we have reached the moment when the advantages of a picker over a heavier feeder become obvious. You cannot do without proper presentation of the bait when catching large fish. And the feeder is too static a tackle that does not allow any significant experiments with presentation. Yes, you can change the weight of the feeder, the length of the leash, and the installation diagram. But the lower limit at which the tackle loses its sensitivity is still too high for the feeder. But with a picker, if necessary, you can put a 10-gram feeder, and then a sinker of the same weight or even lighter. In general, I experiment with bait presentation on every fishing trip, regardless of whether I’m fishing in a place I know well or have come to a new one. After all, something is constantly changing in the river, and this forces the fish to behave differently. It is very useful to change the type of presentation after each catch of a large fish, change the bait on the hook, or simply every half hour of fishing. Picker allows such experiments to be carried out without any problems. And the result can be a stable bite of “bonus” fish. Have fun fishing!

Fishing with a feeder on a picker

Fishing with a feeder on a picker always brings a lot of fish. The feeder is used when casting a fishing rod over long distances. But at the same time using different feeders. They can be of any origin.

Feeder fishing is recommended for beginner anglers. It is very easy to install and operate. In the store you can buy ready-made fishing kits.

We determine what the main line should be using picker rods. Let's share our experiences and thoughts. And an article for “seed”:

Here are some thoughts about fishing line and cord for your feeder:

What to use cord or fishing line for the feeder is a question that essentially does not have a clear answer. The answer to this question lies in the conditions of fishing with a feeder and in the fish that will have to be caught. Although, if you read the forums, a fairly large number of feeder operators prefer a braided cord, completely ignoring the line for the feeder. It is clear that many feeder operators prefer cord based on their own understanding of feeder fishing. And this is quite understandable. But there is a category of fishermen who are influenced by the stereotypes that have developed around braided cord. Moreover, often, the choice in the direction of the cord is based on a banal perception: “cool - not cool.” Like fishing with a line is cool. And the fishing line, in general, completely sucks. In reality, everything is not so simple.

Feeder cord

The arguments for using a cord in a feeder are quite clear and reasonable. The cord does not stretch, the cord transmits the bite well to the quivertip, and gives a positive feeling when pulling even small fish onto the feeder.

In addition to all this, when fishing in the current, due to the small cross-section of the cord, the water pressure on the entire tackle is significantly less than when using fishing line. In principle, using a cord on a feeder provides certain advantages over fishing line in casting range. In addition, the line has less sail when casting, which is especially important in windy weather. And quite naturally, the accuracy in feeder casting increases, which is very important.

But besides all these positive qualities of the cord, it has certain disadvantages. And one of the main disadvantages is the uneven cross-section of the braided cord along its length. Although this drawback very much depends on who makes this cord.

What do we have in the case of using relatively inexpensive American cords (compared to Japanese manufacturers)? And we have a distinctly different cross-section along the length of the cord.

It is completely wrong to assume that a braided cord has an ideal round surface, with the same cross-section along its entire length. And it is completely wrong to say that the cord has a certain diameter. This size may vary. And the appearance of the cord, under high magnification, does not at all resemble the round cross-section of monofilament.

Hence the problem arises that the cord can break under load, anywhere, and not just at the nodes. So the shooting of the feeder or the breakage of the feeder during a hook can happen absolutely anywhere on the cord. In this case, 10-15 meters of cord can fly away, along with the feeder, which is not so cheap.

It is clear that the better the quality of the cord, the more its cross-section approaches circular. And the break, most likely, will be at the node, but in budget versions of the cords, the cord can break anywhere.

Another problem with the cord may appear if fishing with a feeder takes place during the period when fluff flies from the poplars. The cord, much larger than monofilament, collects all this debris on itself. Then the small rings at the top of the feeder begin to become clogged with this debris.

And the cord, compared to fishing line, is less resistant to shells, which may be located at the bottom of the reservoir or on the edges. And if the shell begins to cut the threads of the braid, then shooting the feeder at the moment of casting becomes quite possible. Moreover, these cuts are not always visible, and the strength of the cord in these places is greatly reduced. Although a similar phenomenon with cuts is also observed when using monofilament.

There is one more point that is associated with the breakage of the feeder tips during casting. If the cord overlaps the top, then due to the strength and low extensibility of the cord, part of the top is simply cut off, like a knife. This especially applies to feeder tips with little dough. Although overlaps over the tips are just a matter of attention when fishing with a feeder and casting technique.

It is not very comfortable to catch carp on a feeder with a cord. Precisely, because of the inextensibility and complete lack of shock absorption, while fishing for carp. It is clear that if the conversation is about catching small carp, special depreciation is not needed. The elasticity of the feeder rod and the work of the clutch are enough. But if you have to feeder fish for normal carp, it is better to give preference to monofilament.

When fishing for carp on a feeder, the special sensitivity of the gear, which is provided by the use of braided cord, is not particularly needed. Carp bites are quite confident and it is impossible not to notice them.

It’s another matter if you have to fish at a long distance, and the fish don’t always bite so clearly. You can't do without a cord here. It is the inextensibility of the cord that gives those advantages that no monofilament can provide.

Feeder line

If we approach the issue of fishing line for a feeder in more detail, it is worth noting that fishing line specifically for feeder fishing does not exist. Although some manufacturers continue to persistently write on their packaging the term feeder.

Moreover, the main argument of the manufacturers is that the fishing line does not stretch much. Well, many fishing lines have a low degree of stretch. And it rather depends on the chemical composition of the raw materials from which the fishing line is made. Moreover, low-stretch lines are also found among carp lines, with exactly the same regularity as lines with a high degree of stretch are found.

And it’s not a fact that for feeder fishing you need a low-stretch line. What if this is carp fishing on a feeder? Moreover, the conditions can be completely different. And if the reservoir is clean enough and there are no shelters for the carp after hooking, then what is the point of using a low-stretch, rigid fishing line?

But it could be the other way around. The pond is full of grass and snags, and letting the carp run wild after hooking is a very reckless decision. This is where you need a rigid, low-stretch fishing line.

In addition, the fishing line is quite justified when fishing for bream on a feeder. And it is its good elasticity that can give an additional advantage when playing. And when using a fishing line, the bite will take longer than when using a non-stretchable cord.

conclusions

To briefly summarize everything, you should always use common sense when choosing a fishing line or cord. And the line will definitely win over long distances, when catching any white fish. But it will obviously lose to the fishing line when it comes to catching carp, and in some cases, bream. In addition, the fishing line withstands shell cuts better than braided cord. In short, you need to weigh everything before choosing a cord or fishing line. And it’s best to have a spool with a cord and fishing line.
