Fishing for trophy grayling in the Polar Urals in Vorkuta

The main part of this region is located in the taiga. The fishing season here gains strength from mid-November and ends in April. There is practically no civilization in the republic. This factor seriously affects the fish population in this region: there are a minimum of poachers here, which allows the fish to fully spawn and gain weight without any problems.
Winter fishing in Komi, where the places are mostly wild and where there are practically no roads, can bring a lot of fun and be remembered for a lifetime. The reservoirs here are distinguished by their pristine purity, which is why the taste of the local fish and its benefits are at the highest level.

Despite the unique fishing conditions, without certain knowledge and experience you can’t count on a catch. To prevent this from happening, you should study all the necessary information, some of which can be found in this article.

Review of reservoirs for winter fishing

Rivers such as the Pechora and the Luza River are considered the richest reservoirs for fish. These rivers are home to valuable fish species such as sturgeon and salmon. In the Luza River you can catch carp, burbot, perch, silver bream, chub, etc.

Heading southwest, the Pechora River originates in the southeastern part of this region. The river is quite large, as its length reaches 1800 km.

The Luza River flows in close proximity to the village of Vazyuk. This river originates in the Kirov region, in the Oparinsky district. First it directs its waters to the north and then to the west.

In addition to the guest house, there is a separate house on the territory, designed for 3 people. It is made of ordinary but durable wood. Despite the remoteness from civilization, cellular communications and the Internet are available here.

Base in Knyazhpogostsky district

The tourist base "Bear's Kiss" is located within the village of Meshchura, which is 280 km from Syktyvkar. The entire staff consists of people who know these places by heart. Therefore, you will never be lost with them in the taiga. On the territory of the base there are houses, as well as an ordinary Russian bathhouse.

Here you can rent a boat or a snowmobile and go fishing or hunting. When you go hunting, you can take your huskies with you. The local rivers are rich in fish such as whitefish, pike, grayling, salmon, etc.

Base "Coin"

The base is located on the banks of the Vym River. In the immediate vicinity is the taiga, rich in game, mushrooms and berries. The rivers are clean and have rapids where you can fish with equipment such as spinning and fly fishing. On the territory itself there are 3 lakes where you can easily catch trophy pike.

What fish are found in Komi

Here you can find 50 species of different fish belonging to 16 families. The most valuable of them are salmon, such as omul, salmon and pink salmon. Map of fishing spots of the Republic of Tatarstan

The Komi Republic captivates tourists with its unique natural beauty. Picturesque landscapes are formed by mountainous terrain, taiga and a vast area of tundra.

These places are literally created for successful fishing. It is worth noting that you should not expect comfortable conditions for fishing in the region, as there are a lot of midges, it is terribly cold in winter, and damp in autumn.

Only a true fisherman who wants to get a successful trophy and maximum pleasure from his leisure time is ready to endure all these moments. This republic is small in population, so there is no fishing pressure in local reservoirs.

In turn, the lack of competition between fishermen has a positive effect on the quality of the catch.

Everyone will receive maximum pleasure and a guaranteed trophy. Local fishermen prefer to “hunt” predatory river and lake inhabitants. Pike is becoming the most common catch, although its habits in Siberian conditions are noticeably different.

Pike is caught in almost every body of water in the republic where the bottom has broken relief and depressions. If you go to the lake, then you should look for pike in dense places with abundant vegetation.

Large individuals of this breed prefer to hide in depressions three meters deep, so carefully examine such areas.

As soon as the ice begins to melt from the water surface, lakes and small rivers become promising places for “hunting” for pike. As the water warms up, you can move to deeper bodies of water.

Experienced professional fishermen in the republic, as a rule, do not use spinning rods. They prefer to catch pike with live bait, the main thing is to carefully throw the gear so as not to damage the bait.

Pechora is the fastest to become covered with an ice crust, but on the contrary, it thaws later than everyone else. The sources of this river are located between mountain ranges. A distinctive feature of the river is its crystal clear water with low temperatures.

Fishing events

Every year, in the Komi Republic, organizational events related to the competitive process of fishing are held. Competitions are held in fishing on ice or from a boat, with a spinning rod or a jig, etc. In 2015, the Komi Republic championship in jig fishing was held in the village of Chasovo. The event was perfectly organized and areas for cars, prizes, as well as appropriate fishing conditions were prepared for the participants.

Women and children were allowed to compete without an entry fee of 50 rubles. The competition took place in 2 rounds, 2 hours each, between which the fish were weighed. This time was enough to catch a sufficient number of fish. Not only the winners, but also all the participants remained in a good mood.

Lokchim

The Lokchim River, flowing in the Komi-Permyak district, is also a favorite place for many fishermen. It originates in the Northern Uvals and is formed as a result of the merger of Badiou and Sedyu. This waterway has a flat character, which is not typical for this region. In the upper reaches its width is no more than 15 m. Closer to the mouth it widens to 1 km. The average depth is one and a half meters.

Due to the winding channel, many flood lakes and channels of various sizes were formed in the Lokchim floodplain. Even in summer, the water temperature in the river does not rise above 16 degrees, which creates excellent conditions for the habitat of the following fish species:

  • grayling;
  • dace;
  • burbot.

On a note! Grayling on Lokchim is caught with both spinning and fly fishing gear. In the first case, small rotating spoons No. 0–1 serve as bait. Bites occur more often in the coastal zone.

When fishing with fly fishing gear, floating mayfly imitations show good results. In August, small streamers of bright colors work well.

Winter grayling fishing on Lokchim is also very popular among local residents. In the cold season, this predator should be looked for along the shores washed away by the current, where the depth is about one and a half meters. You can fish with a jig with a worm attached or with small vertical spoons and balancers.

Winter catch
Winter fishing in the Komi Republic can be no less productive than summer fishing.

Dace on this river is consistently caught from July to August using a Bolognese fishing rod. A worm or maggot is used as a bait. Burbot begins to show increased activity in early September. In the fall, it is easy to catch with bottom tackle, the hooks of which are baited with a worm or fish slices.
