Fishing in August
Hot summer is perhaps the most difficult period for fishing.
During the day, the fish bite too sluggishly, so fishing is possible in the morning at dawn and in the evening at dusk. The first two weeks of August are not much different from July, and the change in fishing tactics concerns only a slight reduction in the time of day relative to night. However, at the end of the month the water temperature becomes more favorable for fishing. As the temperature drops, the fish begins to actively “eat”; it loses caution, trying to gain the necessary mass before the onset of winter. Moreover, this applies to both predators and peaceful fish species.
In the first half of the month, layer-by-layer stratification of water is still present in small lakes, so the inhabitants of the bottom, for example: catfish, ide, sturgeon, are forced to periodically rise closer to the surface, since the lower cold layer does not have enough oxygen. Accordingly, this fact is taken into account when fishing in the bottom layers.
For large lakes, rates, reservoirs with an open coastal zone, this is not so important, since under the influence of wind and passive currents, partial mixing of the oxygen-enriched upper layers with the lower ones occurs. At the end of summer, bream, crucian carp, ide, carp, pike, perch, and roach become noticeably active. However, if August turns out to be cold, then heat-loving tench, carp, and catfish will bite reluctantly, and with the onset of cold weather their activity decreases to almost zero.
Gear selection
The choice of gear depends on the fishing location.
If fishing is done from a boat, you can use a donk, which is lowered right next to the boat, as well as spinning rods or feeder rods, which will allow you to throw the bait even deeper (on the rod).
Read: Bream
In the case of catching bream from the shore, you also cannot do without spinning rods. It is very difficult to catch this fish near the shore.
In the evening hours, the bream can approach the shore and at this time fishing with a float is possible.
Hooks and fishing line are selected according to the size of the possible catch. The bream can withstand medium-thick fishing line and ordinary wobbler hooks. If there is a chance of catching a larger bream, you can take larger hooks.
Where to look for fish in August
The first days of August are characterized by continued blooming of water. Since algae spores clog the fish’s gills, most of its representatives try to stick to clean areas near springs, confluences of streams, and rapids. As the weather gets colder, flowering stops, the water clears and fishing continues as usual.
Catfish are traditionally searched for in pits and pools. Carp walk along paths formed in the thickets, occasionally emerging into open areas. The pike rushes at its prey from ambush, hiding among the algae, on the border with open areas. Pike perch, on the contrary, hunts in rapids with a rocky bottom, near exits from holes and rifts, choosing large boulders and snags as shelter. At the end of the month, there are fewer mosquitoes, so the asp is forced to look for falling insects near the shore, under the crowns of coastal trees. Ide and chub tend to look for food along the edges of dumps and ledges, but sometimes they approach trees for random bait.
By the end of the summer season the fry are gaining mass. The younger generation huddles in quiet backwaters, at the exit from the rifts, where various predators, especially perch, periodically come to hunt. White bream and saberfish stick to the reeds. The carp and bream continue to collect food along the bottom.

Spinning fishing in August
The end of summer is the most important time for perch fishing. This schooling predator is caught with live bait, spinners or wobblers through a slow, smooth retrieve along the rocky bottom, without jumping. In the same way, perch is caught on the border of coastal grass, from which it attacks prey. In some overgrown reservoirs, poppers and small jigs are used by moving across the water surface. In addition, pike perch from the perch family continues to actively bite, but it is more often tempted by wobblers and spinner baits. Read also: What baits to catch pike perch with
Pike are also caught on poppers with wobblers, but this predator can be finicky and sometimes it can only be seduced with live bait familiar to the local water area. The asp reacts well to insects by casting the bait using an overlapping technique. The chub actively attacks the spinner, a floating wobbler. Although ide is an omnivore, it takes wobblers and silicone baits well.
Fishing in August with a float rod
The main client of the August float is crucian carp. The best results will be after generous feeding of the fishing area. Among vegetable baits, crucian carp prefers bread with fried vegetable oil and corn. A worm, maggot, or, less often, bloodworms are suitable as animal bait. In small bodies of water, the average crucian carp is perfectly caught with a rod with a side nod and a jig with a red worm attached.
Carp are much more careful and prefer pearl barley, worms, and larvae, with bait casting to greater depths. Silver carp bite on corn or semolina, especially in commercial bets, where it lacks plant food. In some places, perch are actively targeting the worm.
Fishing in August on the feeder
The main objects of feeder fishing are bream and roach. The best places for fishing with this tackle are dumps, edges of ledges, entrances and exits from holes with reverse flow. With some luck, the fishing point falls on the fish “path”, because these types of prey lead a sedentary lifestyle and have established routes for searching for food.
In the depressions at the exit from the rifts, ide and chub sometimes graze. In such areas, this fish bites on a feeder tackle with a boilie. Moreover, the chub is most active at night and early in the morning. Coastal spits with a depth of more than 2 meters become good fishing spots.
Secrets of fishing
It is important to consider that in the last month of summer this underwater inhabitant is still characterized by passivity. Therefore, in order to catch it, the fisherman will have to not only explore large areas in the reservoir, but also experiment with both baits and fishing methods.
Pike fishing in August has its own characteristics that are important to consider. The main difficulty of this fishing is warm water. It is too high a temperature that forces this predator to leave the coastal zone and shallow bays where it is known to feed. In summer, pike always stay in areas where the depth exceeds two meters.
In extreme heat, toothy prey almost always ignores passing bait. This is what makes pike fishing difficult in August. It is also important to know that at this time this fish does not swallow the bait, as it does in the spring or autumn, but only slightly gnaws it. Therefore, pike fishing in August should not be done using high-speed fishing: the object, even if it reacts to the bait, is unlikely to be detected.
What fish to catch in August
Fishing for crucian carp
As the temperature drops, crucian carp bite not only in the morning, but throughout the day. Night fishing with a float rod and a flashlight is especially effective at the end of summer. Spinning with a bottom feeder also gives results, but this type of fish does not go to great depths, sticking to 1.5-2 meters in heated layers of water.
Hunting for pike in August
At the beginning of the month, pike are active only in the morning and evening, but by the end of summer, as the water cools, this predator is caught all day, especially in cloudy weather. During the “zhora” period, pike take almost everything: spinners, jigs, poppers. Twitching with wobblers is especially effective.
When using live bait or pieces of meat, the fish bites on a regular float tackle. But if August turns out to be hot, then you can’t expect an active bite - the predator becomes capricious. Naturally, when fishing for pike, it is necessary to equip the fishing line or cord with a metal leash.
Fishing for bream in August
In the last weeks of summer, bream are active in the evening and at night. The best results are obtained by fishing with feeder tackle, but with the right choice of place, a classic donka on an elastic band with a bell gives good results. This gear is especially relevant for night fishing. In some reservoirs, bream is caught with a long rod with a bombard or a regular float at a maximum casting distance with a depth of 2-3 meters.
Roach activity in August
At the end of summer, both on rivers and in still water, this fish perfectly takes almost any bait and at any depth. Large individuals go deeper, while young animals stick to the surface. Roach is weather dependent, so active biting is observed only in stable weather. Of the gear, the greatest catch comes from the feeder and feeders, and the frequency of bites directly depends on the amount of advance feeding at the fishing point. In stagnant bodies of water, under the canopy of coastal trees or in gaps between algae, roach is best caught using a regular float and vegetable bait with the addition of aromatic additives.
