- Catching pike perch with wobblers. Video
Very soon the rivers will finally be freed from their icy shackles, the water will warm up and fishing with wobblers will intensify. Although I do not use wobblers often, mainly only when fishing for pike perch at night, nevertheless, such fishing is very exciting and on the eve of it, I would like to share the results obtained from my modest experience and also find out the opinions of other anglers on this matter.
Many fans of catching pike perch with a wobbler know very well that one of its favorite habitats is riffles. As a rule, the riffles are shallow and imply a current - under these conditions, I always give preference to a minnow wobbler. The size is not clear, but usually when catching pike perch I use wobblers with a length from 70 mm to 110 mm. The working depth, as applied to rifts, is usually from 0.1 meters and rarely exceeds 1.5 meters.
It is known that pike perch can be caught at any time of the day, but on shallows and rifts, most often, it is active at dusk, at night and at dawn. That’s why they often hunt him at this time. In the dark, more often than others I use extremely slow uniform and stop-and-go wiring or very “soft” twitching. Preferences in color are ambiguous: according to some, bright colors work in the dark; according to others, the bait should always imitate fish, which acts as potential food for pike perch, and therefore should have colors close to real ones (silver, perch, etc. ). I believe that it is advisable to have both colors of wobblers in the box.
Often pike perch in these places become active at sunset, a few minutes before darkness sets in. Then, with the onset of night, its activity becomes unstable and, as a rule, manifests itself in the form of rare outbreaks, followed by several bites. There are several such outbreaks per night. However, it also happens that the pike perch does not show itself at all.
Catching a fanged predator on the rifts is a very exciting activity and contains many interesting moments. I decided to share my five best wobblers for catching pike perch in shallow water at night, taking into account the nuances of such fishing that I know.
My working wobblers for shallow water
When the water in shallow water warms up and underwater vegetation begins to grow wildly, young fish are attracted here. This is due to this. That in shallow water there is enough food in the form of small insects and algae, there is somewhere to hide from danger. Following the fry, predatory fish also come here. For the spinning angler, fishing in vast shallow areas is of great interest because it is full of excitement and leaves a fantastic experience. Of course, in order to successfully fish in such conditions, you need appropriate bait, which will be discussed.
The specificity of fishing in such areas of the reservoir has its own peculiarity. The carpet of algae begins at a depth of about 0.5-0.7 m. This depth will be the working fishing area. It makes no sense to use jig baits and iron, since tufts of grass will cling to the bait on each retrieve. Therefore, as experience shows, floating wobblers with minimal depth will be the most effective.
I’ll start my review, perhaps, with baits whose immersion depth is from 0 to 30 cm. Jackson Dead Float 80, made in Japan, weighing 8 grams. A floating model that becomes a suspender with a leash. It goes deep to a maximum of 25 cm. For me, this minnow has earned the honorary title of one of the best and most catchy wobs for pike in shallow water. True, they mostly take small (up to 1.5 kg) spotted torpedoes. Probably from a small size - only eight centimeters. The vob flies very far, the price is quite affordable, which makes this model popular. The wobbler has its own game, but like any mino it reveals its potential on a jerky retrieve with pulls. With a leash, when the wobbler becomes a suspender, a long pause with a small twitch of the tip of the spinning rod brings phenomenal results. This trick is especially effective when the fish is passive and does not respond to regular baiting. One day I had to watch through polarized glasses how a small pike followed a fish almost all the way to the boat, and then returned to its original parking place. On the next retrieve, the pike came out again. When the predator went for the bait, I stopped the wiring, and the bait was motionless for several seconds. A slight movement of the tip of the spinning rod was enough for the toothy monster to attack the wobbler.
The next killer in my box, working at minimum depth, is the Jackall Tiny Magallon SR. The wobbler is made in the best traditions of the manufacturer, it is two-piece, has high catchability, and flies far. Among other things, it is indescribably beautiful and natural. Magallon does not like sudden movements of the rod - on a slow retrieve with smooth jerks and pulls it reveals itself to the fullest. Otherwise, the front tee gets caught up in the leash. By the way, if you use a steel leash, you need to remove the factory tees and equip the wobbler with lighter ones made of thin wire. Any predatory fish, both large and small, can be caught with this bait. I forgot something... Oh, yes, the price. A few years ago, this vob could be classified as elite class (due to the fabulous price). But now the cost has dropped by half, which makes this wob available to a wide range of anglers. P.S. Catchability and workmanship remained at the highest level
The Daiwa Morethan X-Crocc 95 SSR is a fairly well-known wobbler, which has earned its popularity for its phenomenal catchability, especially with teeth. The Morethan X-Crocc is equipped with a long casting system where the tungsten cylinder moves to the tail of the bait. It has its own game on a uniform retrieve, and on a jerk it behaves almost the same as Dead Float. I would even say that this is an enlarged copy of it (in terms of the game). The wiring of this older brother is similar - short, smooth pulls with a slight kickback of the cord. Although it works with a bang on the more aggressive one. In fishing stores, this wobbler is sold out very quickly, so it is better to look for it through online stores.
The next thing that I consider necessary to include in this review is Zip Baits Orbit 110SP. I was advised to buy it by friends who successfully caught this bait during a two-week foray into the shallow bays of the Volga. It should be noted that it is even more difficult to find than the previous model, but still I was lucky. I found it in an online store, ordered it, and three days later I had the Orbit. It works on any jerk wiring, so you don’t really need to “turn on your brains.” Catcher for medium and large pike, although quite often small fish also catch. The flight qualities, like all Zip Baits wobblers, I rate at 100 on a ten-point scale. This was achieved thanks to the Mag Drive magnetic casting system. Moreover, the magnet is so powerful that it attracts the front tee to the body, which significantly reduces the number of overlaps.
Now I ask for your attention. I present to you my favorite wobbler from Megabass. The Vision 95 is a stunningly beautiful lure that I fell in love with at first sight and forever. It is 95 mm long and weighs 11 grams. Just a real pike killer. This wob comes into action if there is an unknown body of water in front of me, and I need to find active fish. The wobbler catches fish on any line. Smooth stretches, uniform classics, aggressive twitch - these are very easy for the ninety-five. A short pause is especially effective. After each jerk, at the moment of which in most cases the bite occurs.
Oh, I’m all about minoshki, yes about minoshkas. And I completely forgot about the fatty rolls. Wobblers of this configuration are excellent baits for fishing in shallow water. The active, sweeping play that most decoys of this species have creates a powerful hydroacoustic wave. And it just drives pike and perch crazy. Of the models that are in my box, I consider the most catchy ones to be YO-ZURI WO.B.RU 0 and 1. (commonly called Hardcore). The first has a working depth of up to ten centimeters, the second can go deep up to 1 m. The bait has an excellent game and also allows uneven wiring. It is best to twitch these wobs with sharp jerks, during which the bait turns almost 180 degrees. In addition, the Hardcore is equipped with a ball system, which significantly increases the casting distance. Another favorite when fishing in the conditions in question is Silver Creek from the domestic company Silver Creek. This bait is, of course, more designed for perch, but small pike can also be caught. I remember an incident that happened to me a year ago. I just bought this model and went fishing to try it in action. After a couple of hours, I had about a dozen good perches. And so, on the next cast I feel a grip and a dead weight at the other end of the line. After a couple of seconds - active resistance, adrenaline in the blood, and in the boat there is a pike worth two hundred kilos. The rear tee caught the fish at the edge of the lip, which was very good, because I was fishing without a leash. Lucky. And next time such negligence may end in the loss of the trophy. Using a steel leader, I noticed that there were fewer perch bites, so it is advisable to use fluorocarbon. With a leash made of this material, the performance of the wobbler does not suffer, but if a pike takes it, then there is a chance to bring it to the landing net. Another good wobbler from the same company is Amulet Pro. This is an excellent copy of the YO-ZURI 3D Flat Crank, which has become one of the company's legends. But the Ruchyevsky amulet has almost three times the price, and catches fish no worse. To be honest, he didn’t have any special trophies, but he catches fish, and regularly. So, I recommend it to those who are looking for an inexpensive, working wobbler.
In conclusion, I would like to note that fishing in shallow waters is very spectacular. Using polarized glasses, the fisherman can perfectly control the movement of the wobbler and observe the moment of the predator’s bite, of which there are a great many in such areas of the reservoir. The main thing is to choose the key to the fish - the bait that will allow you to make high-quality retrieves, and which will have the necessary action to force the predator to attack. Good luck with your trophy-worthy fishing, and no tail, no scales.
Zip Baits Rigge 90F
- Budget - above average
- Weight - 9.5 grams
- Length - 9 cm
- Depth - 0.5-1 m
- Recess type - pop-up
In general, Zip Baits Rigge wobblers are the favorite models of wobblers among a variety of anglers. We often hear how well they catch any predator in different conditions. In relation to my topic, for catching pike perch in shallow water and riffles, this model became optimal for me. This is not the first season I’ve been fishing with it. The wobbler performed better than others in places with strong currents. Its cheaper copy, Kosadaka ION XS 90F, has the same parameters and also performed well when catching pike perch in shallow water, while the budget category of Kosadaka ION is low, which made this wobbler probably even more popular. Nevertheless, I decided to put the original original version in my TOP.
Review of the best pike wobblers for shallow water
The following minnow-class wobblers are perfect for fishing in shallow water:
- Megabass Vision One Ten;
- Zip Baits Orbit;
- Jackall Squad Minnow;
- DaiwaTD Minnow.
Yo Zuri Crystal Minnow 70F
- Budget - medium
- Weight - 5 grams
- Length - 7 cm
- Depth - up to 0.8 m
- Recess type - pop-up
Wobbler Yo Zuri Crystall Miinow 70F simply showed itself perfectly on shallow riffles, which are loved by pike perch. I noted for myself that it works best in places with not the strongest current. In these conditions, it has excellent play even on extremely slow retrieves and on the lightest jerks. For me, the choice in its favor fell in places where the depth does not exceed 1 meter and where long casting is not required. It turned out to be indispensable for me when fishing on the river. Inya, where he sometimes showed simply stunning results. Having replaced the factory tees with more worthy ones, this wobbler has become a valuable assistant, and taking into account its budget segment, it undoubtedly took its place in the top five.
Zip Baits Orbit 110SP-SR
- Budget - above average
- Weight - 16.5 grams
- Length - 11 cm
- Depth - 0.8-1 m
- Type of penetration - suspender
Another universal wobbler that works just fine in conditions of night fishing for pike perch, above average in size). It showed itself on the Ob riffles with an average depth of about two meters, during retrieves with pauses, which were often followed by a bite. Due to the long-distance casting system, it allows you to be located at more distant points, directly from the biting point. Three tees provide better performance. The number of pike perch caught on this wobbler does not allow me not to place it in the top five.
Autumn
Autumn is the best time to catch pike with a wobbler. In autumn, the water temperature gradually decreases, and the underwater vegetation that grew in summer gradually dies and sinks to the bottom. At this time, pike begin to actively feed before the long and cold winter.
At the beginning of autumn, in September, the best results are shown by medium-sized wobblers with a small depth, which can be used to fish areas adjacent to aquatic vegetation. At this time, pike can most often be found on the edges and shallow waters.
In mid-autumn, from October to mid-November, the water cools even more, and there is even less aquatic vegetation; at this time, the pike gradually moves after small fish to deeper and deeper places, usually 2-4 meters deep. In order to fish in such places, it is advisable to use wobblers of the largest pike sizes, up to 15 cm, with the greatest depth. You need to know well the depth of the place where you are fishing and choose a wobbler with such a depth that the wobbler, when retrieved, goes in close proximity to the bottom.
Lucky Craft Pointer 100SP
- Budget - above average
- Weight - 18 grams
- Length - 10 cm
- Depth - 1.2-1.5 m
- Type of penetration - suspender
Many people know this wobbler primarily as a pike wobbler, and they are right. You often hear how it works great when fishing for pike using a wide variety of fishing rods. And at the same time, he is mentioned in this article for a reason. I don’t know whether it’s due to its persistence, which contributes to excellent amplitude play, due to the noise effect or something else, but sometimes when fishing for pike perch at night, it was he who “shot” and showed himself better than many others. The most effective, in relation to the conditions of night fishing for pike perch, was noted to be wiring with such soft stretches. By experimenting with these pulls, we managed to achieve simply excellent results from this wobbler.
Summer
In summer, the water of most reservoirs warms up well; pike do not like too warm water and at this time of year, most often they either go a considerable distance from the shore and stand in deep holes, often littered with snags. Sinking deep-sea wobblers are best suited for catching pike standing in holes. The size of wobblers can reach up to 15 cm. Wobblers with bright, clearly visible colors work well.

Some pikes stay in the summer close to the surface in the shade of aquatic vegetation. In such conditions, various surface wobblers, including poppers, perform well; wiring of such baits can be done next to or above aquatic vegetation.
To catch pike among aquatic vegetation growing on the bottom, you can use a floating wobbler.
In order to catch pike in such conditions, we throw the wobbler to the point we need, carry out its retrieval, if an obstacle appears in front of the wobbler, stop the reeling, the wobbler floats up, pass the obstacle from above, and continue retrieving as before.
The best time of day for pike fishing in summer is morning and evening. Moreover, pike fishing in the early morning hours is most effective.
Pontoon 21 Agaroon 80SF-SR
- Budget - medium
- Weight - 5.2 grams
- Length - 8 cm
- Depth - 0.4-0.5 m
- Depression type - slowly pop-up
This wobbler completes my TOP. Once upon a time I saw it in Pitertsov’s box in his video and bought it, just like that, for no reason) Slowly pop-up, during pauses it pops up with an element of some “shaking”. However, it was not immediately possible to force him to fish. For a long time the wobbler did not show itself in any way. But once suitable conditions were found for him, he showed himself to be one hundred percent. The wobbler works great on the shallowest riffles with an average depth not exceeding one meter with a fairly strong current, which many of my wobblers cannot cope with. In certain conditions, he began to catch excellently and quickly took a leading position among his comrades in the box.
