Labor fishing on May 1: barbecue, fishing rod and nature are our everything!

Fishing in May

The spawning ban on fishing in the spring can last from one month to three, depending on the region. In some parts of our country it operates from April to May, in others from April to June or from May to July.

You can fish in places where fish do not gather to spawn. It is clear that no one will particularly punish the fisherman for fishing with one rod and one hook, but before going to the reservoir you need to learn about more gear and hooks from the local fishing rules for spawning. However, in places where fish spawn, it is prohibited to catch them with any amount of gear, regardless of the region.

During spawning restrictions, you can catch roach, perch, ruffe, ide, silver bream and other fish. Hunting for catfish, asp, whitefish, sturgeon and other fish listed in the Red Book is prohibited everywhere, and not only during the spawning season. Spawning restrictions also apply to fishing for pike (until the end of the month) and pike perch (until the middle or even the end of June). In the first half of the month you can catch bream, but from May 15 in most regions fishing for it will be prohibited due to the start of spawning.

In the second half of May

In the second half of May, almost any fish bites: trout, sturgeon, bream, perch, carp, crucian carp, carp and many others. It is at this time that many fishermen manage to catch their first trophies.

There is still a ban on fishing from a boat in the reservoirs, and it will end only with the onset of June. In the second half of May, the weather is already hot; at night the thermometer does not drop above 15-17 degrees; there are often rains and thunderstorms.

This weather, of course, is not conducive to active fishing, but fishing at this time is not only possible, but even necessary.

If you choose active fishing over passive relaxation, then you can fish with a fishing rod using simple bait: millet porridge with breadcrumbs or cake.

It is important to bait the fish correctly: it should include large pieces, be aromatic and be easily picked up by the current. With such a competent approach, you are guaranteed success.

Remember that in lakes and reservoirs the water warms up much faster than in rivers; as the water warms up, carp spawning begins, and if you get into the reservoir at this time, fishing promises to be fruitless.

For those whose favorite fishing rod is a spinning rod, the forecast is disappointing: at this time, the pike is already scattering around the reservoir, looking for secluded places, and subsiding in the vegetation. Therefore, you will have to move a lot around the reservoir in search of pike habitat.

In the second half of May there is still a ban on fishing, and therefore you can fish not everywhere you want, but only where it is allowed.

Where to look and what to fish for in May

May is a great month for catching bream and roach. Most often they are caught using a float rod, but on rivers and large reservoirs it is better to use a feeder. The main thing in catching bream and roach is bait. With its help, you can not only attract fish to the fishing spot, but also keep them there for as long as possible. Roach can be caught during almost the entire daylight hours, and bream bite even at night. Dough, maggots, worms, mash, and semolina are used as bait. Also, with the beginning of flowering cattails and reeds, previously sluggish carp, crucian carp, and tench become active. They are caught well until the very beginning of June, or more precisely, before the start of spawning. The best bait to use is corn, dough, steamed grains, oatmeal, worms, and maggots.

In May you should look for fish in the following places:

  • at shallow depths, where the water warms up faster;
  • in snag;
  • among the reeds;
  • in areas with last year's vegetation.

Don't forget about the predator. It is better to look for pike where there are natural or artificial shelters - reed thickets, sunken trees, bridge piles, etc. Perch is caught near the shore, where it searches for fry. Pike perch and catfish are preparing to spawn, and if you manage to get to the pre-spawning feast, the catch may please you not only with the quantity of fish caught, but also with the trophy size of individual individuals.

Fishing on the Volga

Many fishermen are looking forward to the beginning of May to go fishing on the Volga. At the end of spring, you can catch almost any fish here - crucian carp, carp, carp, roach, catfish, asp, pike, pike perch, etc. They fish here with a float rod, a feeder, and even a spinning rod. Among the places to search for fish, I would like to mention holes, snags, edges, rolls, thickets of reeds and cattails. They successfully catch catfish from a quok boat, tempting them with a bunch of worms, a frog, or mussel meat.

Fishing in Astrakhan

In Astrakhan, in addition to the Volga, there are a huge number of other rivers and reservoirs where you can successfully catch a variety of fish. Among the most common of them are:

  • Mitinka,
  • Akhtuba,
  • Ashuluk,
  • Kharabalyk,
  • Buzan,
  • Kigach, as well as numerous eriki.

Often this is where you can most often catch trophy pike, pike perch, catfish, asp, carp, and carp. And this is due to the smaller number of fishermen who give preference primarily to the Volga with its open spaces and the presence of hunting and fishing bases. They fish here with all kinds of gear - float, feeder, donka, spinning rod, from the shore or boat, day and night. Read more about fishing in May on Akhtuba

Fishing in the Moscow region

With the arrival of warmth and warming up of the water in the Moscow region, carp, carp, crucian carp, roach, ide, chub, asp begin to peck, and the hunt for predators becomes more productive, as it comes closer to the shore in search of sites for juvenile fish. They fish with a float rod and feeder, but spinning fishing is prohibited in the Moscow region in May. For most fish species, by the end of spring, spawning ends and the feeding begins, which every self-respecting angler dreams of catching.

Fishing on the Don

The Don is one of the richest rivers in our country. In May, here you can catch bream, small fish, mullet, shamaika, grass carp, roach, carp, carp, crucian carp, sabrefish, ide and many other fish. There are also plenty of predators here - pike, perch, pike perch, catfish, asp, and in the northern part of the river you can even find burbot, which is rare in the southern regions. Fishing on the Don is mainly done with a donk, feeder or spinning rod, but you can also successfully fish from a boat or piers with a float rod. Near the shore, crucian carp, perch, roach, bleak, white bream, silver bream and other small fish actively bite, and closer to the riverbed live real trophies - carp, ide, pike, catfish, grass carp and others.

Briefly about fishing for popular fish in the month of May

May chub and dace

In early spring, chub biting is observed in the southern regions in fast-flowing rivers. As the water warms up, its bite is also observed in more northern regions. The peak of chub activity occurs at the end of May. The excellent appetite of this fish is associated with the appearance of many small insects in the water: chafers, beetles, etc. They catch it with spinning rods using artificial midges and beetles. The chub feeds near the surface, so the bait is kept in the upper layers of the water. Chub fishing in May brings good results when fly fishing. The most catchy bait for chub is the so-called maniac. They catch it with success using a feeder and a float.

Dace is also well caught in May. It has similar habits to the chub. It is successfully caught using donkeys and spinning rods.

Roach, roach, silver bream in May

Fishing in May is effective in terms of catching silver bream, roach and roach. At the end of the month there is a rush of roach in the middle and northern latitudes, the same as in April in the southern regions. Vobla is finishing the April period. In early and mid-May, it is caught everywhere in the Astrakhan region. Traditional methods of catching roach and roach are feeder, donk and fishing with a float in the wire. Gustera lasts until the end of June. Moreover, it is caught in channels, eriks and floodplains, in places with clean water, sandy and rocky bottoms.

Baits are traditional for these fish: maggots, bloodworms, worms, bark beetle larvae for roaches, and at the end of the month - bread, pearl barley and vanilla bun balls. The bait is initially used with a subtle vanilla smell, and at the end of the month, with the water warming up, barberries, strawberries, and chocolate work. The warmer the water, the more flavorful the bait. The volume of bait increases, since as the water temperature increases, the fish's metabolism becomes more intense.

How to catch asp in late spring

May fishing is also successful when catching asp. Especially in the second half of the month. In May, it actively feeds and often responds to spinning baits. At the end of May, it becomes aggressive and attacks baits when fishing from the shore and boat, not paying attention to the angler. Catching him at this time is a pleasure. It is important not to overdo it and not to go too far.

May rudd bite

Fishing in May brings many pleasant moments to novice anglers. Rudd begins to be caught this month. As soon as the water temperature reaches 15 degrees, rudd begins to be actively caught on float rods near the shore, which delights beginners. It responds equally well to plant and animal baits. The main thing is to find a quiet, peaceful place with a rich food supply, and you can get a lapdog or a flywheel with fine equipment; you'll definitely catch it by ear. Some large individuals in the area of the rolling part of the Volga attack small rotating spoons.

Spring bream

At the end of April the bream begins to bite. And in the middle and end of May, feeders catch good bream. Bream are active in well-warmed places. He loves to eat well, so the volumes of bait for bream are several times higher than those for roach and crucian carp, but less than the volumes for carp. Fishing for bream in May is notable for the fact that voluminous baits in the form of large red worms, voluminous maggots and large bloodworms are placed on the hooks on cold days.

Tench fishing in the month of May

Fishing in May involves active tench fishing. Its peak activity occurs in the second half of the month. Anglers love that tench are biting all day these days. The best places to catch it are considered to be silted areas and areas with bottom vegetation. The swaying of the stems indicates the presence of tench.

How to catch perch

Perch fishing is excellent in May. It is active until hot weather arrives. If a spinning angler finds himself in a place where this striped predator gathers, he will easily catch several dozen fish in an hour or two. In May, perch greedily takes on worms and bloodworms, as well as spinners, wobblers and silicone baits.

Pike for May

Fishing in May with pike lures is good because pike respond well to rotating and oscillating spoons and wobblers of various types. It becomes active after the spawning period, and is well caught throughout the month.

Pike perch at the end of spring

Pike perch can be caught well all month and at the beginning of the next. May fishing is productive if you catch this predator using light spinning baits. If the water level drops noticeably, then the tackle is cast further away, and vice versa: when the water level is high, pike perch is well caught near the shore.

Spinning fishing in

Spinning fishing in May is prohibited everywhere. This is due to the beginning of spawning of most species of both predatory and peaceful fish. However, this does not mean that it is impossible to hunt predators during this period. They can be caught using float and bottom gear, using fry, cut fish, bunches of worms, frogs, leeches, etc. as bait. This is interesting: Pike spawning, perch spawning

True, in some regions the ban on spinning fishing is partially lifted in May, and then you can try to seduce the predator with medium-sized artificial baits - wobblers, rotating and oscillating spoons, various “rubbers”, tackle with dead fish.

Fishing on May Day within the city!

During the holidays it is not always possible to get out of the city, but this is not a reason to deny yourself the pleasure. Especially if your hobby is shared by a loved one, as can be seen in the report of a user of our site - Alpix.

Fishing within the city is rapidly gaining popularity, and that’s great! So, if you have problems with time during the holidays and you won’t be able to go to the “Secret Place”, take a couple of hours, take a spinning rod and boldly go, for example, to the Embankment! You can fish there and just have a good time.

Pervomaisky Street Fishing on the embankment

“After a joint trip to the embankment with the ULF Club, which took place on April 29, today, May 1, my girlfriend and I decided to once again go to the embankment for a couple of hours to catch pike perch.

The weather is so-so - the wind is very cold, your hands are cold, but when the sun comes out it becomes a little warmer)

We started catching, at 1.5″ and 2″ avaruna there were pokes, bites and one kill of about a kilo (or maybe more) of zander. I simply couldn’t lift it, the fully tightened clutch couldn’t handle it, it kept unwinding, and the stick was completely bent. In general, he walked on a hook and got off)

Then, having torn off the avarunas on the hooks, I decided to put on a red 1.5″ moss and a small zander from the very first retrieve. After that, I gave my girlfriend a 1.5″ moss, but purple, and she also caught a zander. I was happy like a child)))

I also put in a purple moss and caught a fairly large pike perch, it swallowed up to the tomatoes))

In general, we had a great time, the score was 3:3.

Worked:

  • Avaruna mother-of-pearl 2″-offset;
  • Mosya 1.5″ purple - 5 zander were caught with it (2 me and 3 my girlfriend);
  • Mosya 1.5″ red - 1 zander.
  • We caught it with Ultralight weighing 4 and 6 grams. JJ Mack JMS-76-R poles up to 7.5g, Aiko Dixi 195UL up to 7g.

All pike perch were released back into the river.”

Fishing in May with a float rod

May is the time of active fish. All types of peaceful fish, as well as most predators, are perfectly caught using float tackle. Crucian carp, carp and carp begin their pre-spawning feast. They greedily peck at any bait, be it a worm with maggots or corn, dough, bread, etc.

In fishing on rivers with medium and strong currents, chub and ide are caught on a float. Tench are caught with bunches of worms in windows of aquatic vegetation, lowering the bait as close to the bottom as possible, without fear of getting caught on the stems and leaves of algae. White bream and bream are active. At the beginning of the month, the silver bream has a pre-spawning feast. Rudd are caught in the shallows.

Pike, pike perch and perch take good bait with live bait. You can find them in the same place where the fry swim, which are the main object of hunting for predators in May.

Patience and a little effort!

A user of our site, Russky_88, went on a real “labor” fishing trip on May Day! The mood is fighting, the gear is in order, there is a holiday in the soul... only the fish is not biting something. However, the author of the report is not one of those who give up quickly, and he went on a search, which in the end was crowned, although not grandiose, but still a success!

MAY 1st!!!

“ICE, comrades! Today I had an exciting fishing trip, with the opening of the swimming season! So I set off to surf the expanses of the Zaeltsovsky beach and its environs, at 11.00! After bathing the contents of my box for two hours and getting no results, I decided to change place...

I drove a couple of kilometers lower, where I got the first bite and 200-300 grams of zander, after leaving for about an hour, without success, I decided to go home. On the way, I dropped into a tulka, nothing changes there, there are a lot of people, it’s not comfortable to catch, I left for about twenty minutes, pulled out one little dog and gave up on this idea... In the evening I again had a few hours of free time, I decided to try to go to the power line... arrived, unpacked, set out to fishing spot, but...to my regret, on the way I met an obstacle in the form of a mini-river, about ten meters wide, but I couldn’t retreat, I had to wade, the depth turned out to be just above my knees... That’s how I, for the first time this year, deliberately climbed into water!)

In an hour there were five bites, one successful - pike perch 800, one escape and three idle! The weather leaves much to be desired, gusts of wind make fishing simply impossible for some time! Well, overall everything is fine, I’m happy, I whiled away the day doing my favorite activity) Good luck to everyone and NHNC)”

Fishing on a feeder in May

You should fish with a feeder where you cannot throw a float tackle - far from the shore or on rivers with strong and medium currents. Basically, bream, large roach, crucian carp, carp, carp, ide, chub, and fish are caught using feeder gear with a feeder. To begin with, before you start fishing, it would be nice to study the features of the bottom topography. You should not rely too much on areas with a flat and bare bottom. It’s better to find a small hole, feel the edge, etc.

Particular attention should be paid to islands of underwater vegetation located at some distance from the shore. It is on their edges that all the fish will gather in search of food.

Fishing for bream on a feeder in May

Depending on geographical location

In the northern half of the 1st zone in May, fish are caught from the ice. At this time, the Murmansk Arkhangelsk and Komi lakes are rich in perch and char, which can be caught with spoons. Pike is caught well both in the first and second half of May.

After the ice on the reservoirs opens, you can fish with bottom rods for a worm or maggot. With this rod you can catch: perch, roach, grayling. They usually catch pike or perch with fry, and if the weather is inclement, they bite burbot.

In the 2nd zone, the summer fishing period is already beginning. The flood has already ended, and the water has become clear. Roach, dace, sometimes ide, perch and chub bite well on bloodworms, maggots or worms.

In the reservoirs of the middle zone, bream goes well. In the Neva they fish for smelt. In the lakes of the Southern Urals you can catch pike, grayling, taimen, and lenok. At this time, sea bass is going well in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky.

In the 3rd zone, an active period of fishing is established from the first days. Depending on your preferences, you can fish with a bottom fishing rod, a float rod, or a spinning rod.

In literally all bodies of water, fish grab any bait offered, and fishing is a pleasure. Various types of fish bite well in all rivers.

In the rivers of Moldova and Transcarpathia, which belong to the 4th zone, the fish abundance is the same as in the 3rd zone. Here, in places with a slow current, pike perch swims well, pike lives in the algae and is ready to bite, and carp, ide, and chub are caught everywhere on the bottom.

Fishing in May for crucian carp

The May crucian carp begins its pre-spawning feast. He actively bites on any bait, be it of animal or plant origin. You can tempt crucian carp with corn, bread, dough, worms, maggots, pearl barley, oatmeal, mastyrka, etc. You can catch it near the shore in thickets of reeds or cattails, as well as among underwater vegetation. To make fishing more successful, you need to use bait, to which crucian carp responds well.

Mad bite of crucian carp

For pike in May with a spinning rod

When hunting pike in May, you must remember the ban on spinning fishing, which is valid for a month. It’s better to temporarily forget about spinners, twisters, wobblers and other artificial baits and switch to live bait fishing. To do this, you can use both float tackle and a variety of donks. The so-called “grass fish” (small pike up to 1-2 kg) usually sits near the shore, near reeds or cattails, as well as next to algae. Larger specimens must be looked for at depth, in holes or at the edges.

May fishing for bream

Bream loves depth. That is why it is better to catch it from the shore using a feeder or donka. It is better to fish with float tackle from a boat, since near the shore you can mainly catch only small bream. Bait for bream - worm, maggot, sandwich, shell meat. To enhance the bite, you need to use bait, preferably purchased bait, since bream reacts to it much faster than to homemade bait made from pearl barley, cake and other ingredients that saturate it and suppress its appetite for a long time.

May fishing with overnight on Barlak

When fishing, the catch is not the main thing, it is rather a pleasant bonus. The most important thing here is the process and solitude with nature. People miss the opportunity to admire such beauty that it takes their breath away. Especially if this is the first fishing trip in May. Sometimes you sit and envy yourself: it’s morning, fog is spreading across the water surface, birds are waking up, and all this is for the fisherman!

The author of this report, site user a_krasulya, ended up on just such a fishing trip. There is a fish, but it’s not biting so well. But how quiet, beautiful and good it is. Yes, and a substantial snack in the fresh air is worth a lot.

Barlak

“ICE to everyone! Happy May 1st! Yesterday, April 30th, the two of us visited Lake Barlak, contrary to the forecast of weather forecasters: as predicted, there was sun, rain, calm, hail, and wind! The weather changed every hour. But I really wanted to spend time in nature doing my favorite pastime, especially since I really missed the float and donk. We arrived at 7 am and stood “in the middle” of the lake. We installed two donks and 2 floats - for 1.5 hours there was not a single bite, we caught them with a worm/maggot and just a worm.

The wind rose, a wave began to blow, we decided to go to the end of the lake, where there are small islands with vegetation and where the water is smooth. Fish periodically melted there, sometimes even of quite good size. We stood there for 2 hours, with one unfulfilled bite.

Then we decided to go to the dam and leave the micro jig/spinners, because we heard that there was good perch fishing there. Silence too. At the same time, the guys were fishing with us on the outlet, they caught a crucian carp worth 350 grams per eye. From the dam we decided to go to the opposite bank, behind the dachas.

We found a small island, fished from it, and had lunch there - pork neck kebab on coals, marinated in onions and Tabasco. About 5 minutes after casting the donkey, the ringing bells begin to convulse - hooking, when retrieving it there is an offensive derailment. Bites once an hour on the donk - mostly small perch up to 50 grams, the float was silent, the crucian carp did not show up. At around 18:30 a thundercloud approaches from the side of the dam, the wind rises, at the moment when it was already passing its black edge over us, the “calm before the storm” occurs - complete calm sets in. At this moment, the bite on the float occurs: it was nice to watch a friend fish for something more or less serious. Half a minute later we have the carp in our hands.

After this, a strong wind begins while the thunderstorm front passes. We fished until about 20:30 - there were 4 more bites of small perch. We set up camp, put on tea, and cook lamb shurpa.

It starts to rain decently, it’s good that we took a winter icekub, sheltered from the rain there and had a quiet dinner. We didn’t set up a tent, because in the rain it wasn’t a very reasonable idea - the soil turned to mud + last year’s dried leaves. All this sticks in a centimeter layer on the shoes, if only the tent had been removed. We slept in the car. In the morning we fished from 6 to 8:30, it was fresh outside, there were 0 voles. At 9 we packed up the camp and went home. The water is still very cold, the fish are not very active.

By the way, I saw two pike, 700 grams each, in the grass in shallow water - apparently they were spawning. We had a great time, the season is open! The nature around has come to life - birds are singing, muskrats are swimming, ducks are darting over the lake, schools of geese are flying high in the sky. We saw a huge beaver - it swam literally under our feet, surfaced 10 meters away, looked at us for a minute and swam further on its beaver business!

Now about the painful part - where are the gazebos, everything is more or less clean and well-groomed. Next is a trash heap: plastic bottles, glass bottles, cans. In heaps, in bags or scattered! Well, it's just disgusting! People, fishermen, vacationers - clean up after yourself! Don't mess with nature!

They took out 2 garbage bags from the nickel where they were standing. All the fish were released. It pecked at the worm. The water is cloudy. NHNCH everyone!”

Roach fishing in May

Despite its activity, roaches are particularly cautious in May. After all, before spawning, it comes very close to the shore and can be caught almost under the feet of the fisherman, at a depth of half a meter to a meter. That is why when fishing for roach near the shore, you should be especially careful and behave as quietly as possible. They catch roach using any tackle - float, donk, feeder. The main condition is the thinnest gear possible, since coarser ones can scare away the fish.
