Astrakhan perch

For some, perch is a kind of addition to the main catch, and for others it is an excellent opportunity to “soak” a dry score in a game with predators when nothing else is caught, and for others it is a favorite object of fishing and a bunch of well-fed humpback salmon is much nicer than any pike and pike perch. In summer, fishermen often use a balance beam to catch perch. It is worth noting that many hunters needlessly underestimate the potential of this bait. Therefore, it makes sense to talk in detail about its characteristics and methods of use.

Balancers, like other baits for predators, differ in size, shape and color variety. In any case, going fishing with 1-2 balance beams with you is, at a minimum, naive. The mood of a perch often changes, and it is impossible to say for sure what it will want to eat at a given moment.

☸ Tackle for summer fishing with a balance beam

A fishing rod for such fishing should be durable, and most importantly light and comfortable. It is advisable to build quickly. Its length depends on how shy the predatory fish in the selected body of water is. If she is not afraid of watercraft, then a spinning rod 3 meters long will do, otherwise you will have to use a 6-meter Bolognese. It’s better to take a telescopic fishing rod, so that if it gets caught under the boat, you don’t have to hold it by the very tip, but simply fold your knees and unhook the bait.

reel with a small spool. A meat grinder is needed only for landing fish (such fishing does not involve long casts), so the only requirements for it are easy movement and maximum balance with the rod.

As the main fishing line, it is better to use a braided cord with a diameter of 0.1 to 0.14 mm (depending on the size of the fish you plan to catch). This is an ideal option for fishing for perches and small pikes in thick grass, from which the prey has to be lifted very quickly to avoid snags. In order not to frighten the predator with the braid, a leash made of special material must be installed at the end. For example, Pro Leader.

The tackle is equipped with a nod , although you can do without such an element. The nod makes the balancer play more natural and attractive. The best option is a coil spring.

Fishing rod for balancer - features of use in winter and summer

Fishing is one of the most popular activities, both winter and summer. Each of these types of fishing can be called special in terms of the selection of gear and equipment.

Fishing is impossible without the most important thing - fishing rods, there are many varieties of them. This article will discuss the topic of selecting a fishing rod for fishing with a balance beam.

Winter fishing rod for balancer

First, let's find out what a balancer is.

They are manufactured:

  • Silicone;
  • Metal with plastic fins;
  • Metal with fur plumage.

The color of the bait is also of great importance. The use of a certain color in winter may differ from summer, and it also matters which predator will be caught.

The balancer imitates a small fish very well, which allows it to attract a predator very well. It is also a noisy bait, which is another plus for tempting fish.

Preparing the fishing rod

A fishing rod for winter fishing with a balancer is not very difficult to manufacture, but it has its own nuances.

The main characteristics of a winter fishing rod should be:

  • Ease.
  • Compactness.
  • Reliability.

A good option would be a fishing rod with a neoprene or cork handle, the length of which does not exceed 40 cm. The reel should be small. The rod should be elastic, which will give a confident play of the bait and ensure a clear hooking of the fish.

For fishing with a balancer, a nod with more stringent parameters is used, which will soften the blows of the fish. These are perhaps the most important qualities that should be present in a winter fishing rod.

Choosing a fishing line

The fishing line parameters for winter fishing should be as follows:

Over 13 years of active fishing, I have found many ways to improve the bite. And here are the most effective:

  1. Bite activator. Attracts fish in cold and warm water with the help of pheromones included in the composition and stimulates its appetite. It’s a pity that Rosprirodnadzor wants to impose a ban on its sale.
  2. More sensitive gear. Read the relevant manuals for a specific type of gear on the pages of my website.
  3. Pheromone-based lures.

You can get the rest of the secrets of successful fishing for free by reading my other materials on the site.

  • Tear-resistant;
  • Does not absorb water;
  • Resistant to temperature changes (no memory);
  • It's good to hold knots.

To select a fishing line for a specific balancer, you can use Table 1.

Table 1.

Balancer size (cm)Line diameter (mm)
2-2,50,12-0,14
3-3,50,15
4-50,16
5,5-60,17
6,5-7,50,17-0,2

Very much attention should be paid to the diameter of the fishing line, since even the slightest deviation from the designated diameter can negatively affect the performance of the bait, or even completely negate the performance.
Fluorocarbon fishing line has proven itself very well for winter fishing. It is not recommended to use “braid” for reasons such as: it does not stretch, which leads to fish disappearing, and is also prone to frequent tangling.

Reel Features

For ice fishing rods, reels with an open drum that rotates without much effort are preferable. The diameter of this tape measure should be small, that is, not exceed 7 cm, and have a button or line release lever with a ratchet. The open reel makes it easier to see how much line is on the spool.

This is very convenient when fishing in places with great depth or with current. If the fishing rod falls into the water, it is easy to remove the trapped water (due to the fact that the drum is open), and this will also prevent the fishing line from freezing, unlike the closed type. Multiplier reels are also used.

They are very convenient for catching fish from great depths, thanks to the adjustable friction, which helps to avoid breakage. But there is also a minus - the reel is small, so winter fishing line often falls off in rings when fishing with light balancers.

Fishing on a balance beam in summer

Although the balancer is considered a winter bait, it is also used in the summer for catching predators, using rods and tackle that are more suitable for a given season.

Rod length

When fishing with bait in the summer, you first need to pay attention to the choice of fishing rod. If you prefer fishing from a small boat and at a depth of more than 5 meters, then it is quite possible to use a winter type rod with a hard nod. When fishing from the shore, use longer and lighter rods. The coil is used in rare cases.

Choosing a fishing line

Fishing line for summer fishing is used in various options and colors, it depends on:

  • Lure size.
  • Fishing method.
  • Fishing spots.
  • Behavior or mood of the fish.

To accurately determine the fishing line for the balancer, use Table 2.

table 2

Line diameter (mm)Balancer size (cm)
0,12-0,142-2,5
0,153-3,5
0,164-5
0,175,5-6
0,17-0,26,5-7,5

In the summer, braiding with a diameter of 0.14 to 0.16 mm is mainly used, in contrast to the winter period.

Bait size and color

Summer is the most varied fishing period, and a variety of baits are used. As for balancers, preference is for heavier options and small sizes, from 3 to 5 cm.

In rare cases, there are bites on large baits, but this depends on the location and fishing conditions. It often happens that perch is caught well even with the same baits that were used in winter.

Features and tactics of fishing with a balance beam

There are a great variety of anglers and fishing methods, both for winter and summer fishing. Let's look at the most common and effective ones.

in winter

Raise it a couple of times by 40 -50 cm and sharply lower the bait to the very bottom, waiting a few seconds. Then we raise the balance approximately 70 cm and make very small shakes. Lower the bait to the very bottom several times, with delays of 2 seconds.

Then we raise it half a meter and wait until the balancer stops playing completely, then we sharply raise it another 40 cm. We wait a couple of seconds and raise the bait again (all movements are made only up without lowering). This manner of playing with bait allows you to seduce even the most well-fed perch.

After waiting for the balancer to touch the bottom, raise it 40 cm and hold it at this level until it calms down completely. Then we sharply raise it again, but at half the height of the previous one, also holding it at the stopping level. After a short pause, we switch to the classic bait game with a pause of 3-5 seconds.

When using wide-back balancers of the “Shad” type, after raising the bait to a certain distance, which is calculated by the fisherman himself, the descent must be done little by little, no more than 10-12 cm. Otherwise, when lowered for a long time, the bait falls on its side and does not create the effect of the game.

In summer

We start by lowering the bait to the very bottom. After using the reel, slowly raise the balancer above the bottom a few centimeters.

Retrieving is carried out by smoothly swinging the rod and returning the bait to its initial position. Pauses between strokes are determined by experiment, since fish can be picky.

It must be remembered that playing for a long time with bait in one place can attract even the most inactive predator.

Features of catching certain types of fish

Each fish is different in its fishing method, especially predators. Next, each technique will be considered separately.

Pike

The most common places for pike fishing are:

  • lakes;
  • reservoirs;
  • small rivers.

Fishing for pike on a balance beam is mainly carried out in winter, but the most suitable moment is the first ice. At this stage, pike can be caught very well in any weather conditions, as well as when the ice melts. At these moments, the fish are very active, and you can catch them in the most unexpected places. You also need to take into account that pike are very careful and are difficult to catch when the ice is transparent, it is better to wait for a little snow or cloudiness of the ice.

Having decided on the fishing location, you need to cut about 20 holes at a distance of approximately 10 m from each other. Once the bite has been determined, cut a couple more additional holes near this hole. The sludge should be left around the hole, which will allow it to freeze less. You can also pour a little slush into the hole, this will disguise it, but this procedure should only be done in mild frost.

Zander

You need to know that catching pike perch on a balance beam is not an easy task, and not every fisherman will succeed the first time. The bait does not need to be pulled up and down or jerked sharply, as many inexperienced fishermen do.

First, you need to let the balancer go down to the very bottom, then lift it up, slowly with small twitches, with a pause of at least 15-30 seconds. You also need to take into account that if there is no bite for a long time, then you need to change the place or bait. It is also necessary to take into account the fact that the balancer is intended for fishing only in still water.

Perch

The technique of catching perch requires both attentiveness and experience.

During the first casts you need to interest the fish in this way:

  • let the bait lie on the bottom;
  • after that, quickly, but not sharply, wind the fishing line;
  • then we throw it in again.

Until we feel an almost imperceptible bite or there is a very strong jerk with small pauses, then this makes it clear that a fish has been caught and that it has not been caught on a snag or some other debris.

Perch is a very voracious fish and therefore often swallows bait that catches its eye. For this reason, it is not advisable to hook, so as not to damage the fish’s mouth and not give it the opportunity to escape.

Balanced fishing rods have many types and uses. Each angler uses a fishing rod according to his preference, whether it is fishing from the shore, winter fishing or fishing from a watercraft.

☸ Effective baits

For vertical fishing in the summer from a boat, narrow-bodied balancers up to 5 cm long are most often used. It is difficult to fish with larger baits among vegetation. The problem is their wide play, which leads to frequent snags. In addition, mostly small predators are caught, which can simply ignore a large bait.

The working color is selected during the fishing process, so the arsenal should consist of at least three basic colors:

  • silver – gray lures with a darkened back;
  • gold – balancers with golden sides;
  • red head - white body and red head.

Some spinners, both supporters of classic spinning fishing and fans of vertical trolling, mistakenly believe that the color of the bait does not particularly affect the result. In fact, this is not so, because you have to fish mainly at shallow depths and in clean, clear water, and the main predators of our latitudes - pike and perch - rely primarily on their eyesight.

fishing on balance beam in summer

You can see for yourself that a lot depends on color. To do this, you just need to try two completely different options: discreet natural colors and something from the bright “avant-garde”. As a rule, it only bites on one of them. To add attractiveness to the balancer, you can put multi-colored cambrics on its tee or tie a bunch of red wool. After this modification, the fish sits securely on the bottom hook.

Rating of the top 5 best balancers for pike

Those who have not yet compiled their own rating of the best models are recommended to pay attention to this TOP 5. The presented products show excellent results on different bodies of water.

So, the rating:

  1. RAPALA JIGGING RAP W07 . Product for winter fishing with good balance. Does not cling to snags, does not deviate from the hole. Length 7 cm.
  2. Nils Master Nisa 50 . The product is only 5 cm long for fishing at a depth of no more than 3 meters. Interesting game, wide selection of colors, fluorescent options available.
  3. Scorana ICE FOX 55 . The reddish-red tail and head perfectly attract predators; the imitation of scales makes the bait more realistic. All-season bait, suitable for catching pike on a balance beam from March to April, in muddy water.
  4. KUUSAMO Tasapaino 50 . The best option for difficult areas of the bottom with snags and algae. Factory hooks are sharp, colors are realistic.
  5. Lucky John Pro Series "Mebaru" 67 . Three holes for mounting. The large head and long tail create an interesting game.

☸ Selecting a watercraft

To fish on a plumb line, you don’t need a powerful boat or a large boat with a motor, since you usually don’t have to swim long distances. The most suitable vessel would be a two-seater rubber boat, which can be pumped up on the shore, launched into the water and quietly approached to a promising location. Why double? It is more convenient to fish with a balance beam in the summer together with a partner: one fishes, and the second sits on the oars and takes the fish into the landing net. By the way, about the oars. Instead, experienced fishermen advise arming yourself with small paddles, which are much more convenient to maneuver without making noise.

☸ Fishing tactics

Throughout the summer and in the first half of autumn, predators announce their presence with loud splashes in the grass. This is how they hunt for food fish. Having heard the characteristic splashes, you must very carefully approach the place where they were coming from, wait a couple of minutes and carefully lower the balancer into the water, or rather into a clean window in the middle of vegetation. You need to approach from such a direction that the shadow of the boat and the people sitting in it does not fall on the treasured window. An anchor, of course, is out of the question.

First, the bait sinks to the bottom, then rises 10 cm, and you can make the first throw with the rod. Then a 3-second pause and a second jerk. After every 5 tosses, it is recommended to raise the balancer by 30 centimeters, gradually catching the entire vertical. If the fish does not react, you should try another bait or change the fishing location.

fishing in the summer on a balance beam

A bite during a vertical lure is detected by a nod, and in most cases it is clearly transmitted along the rod. The hook should be short and sharp. It is important to hold the fish, cope with the first powerful jerks and quickly bring it to the surface, otherwise a snag cannot be avoided.

Fishing with a balancer: only at anchor

For some reason, it so happened that the majority of Russian fishing enthusiasts perceive the balance beam exclusively as winter gear, while fishing with a balance beam in the summer can be exciting, gambling and “prey”. Below we will try to analyze some aspects of the “work” of the balancer in the warm season.

Question one: who are we catching, and where? The fact is that in most Russian regions, vertical fishing while moving with a self-raft is prohibited. This means that if you want to “tap” the fairway depths or those close to them when fishing with a balance beam - in fact, the places where large predators go in warm weather - it is better to first examine them using a spinning rod. Jig is one of the favorite pike perch and bersh baits, a large “shaker” with a dough of 25-28 g is pike... Burbot, as in winter, prefers to stand in snags at a depth of 5-10 m, perch - in thickets of grass, where fishing is excellent in summer on a “rotator” with a small load on an additional leash or on a small noise “Kastmaster” with a dough of 8-10 g...

We do the wiring, naturally, from the bottom or half-water. Where bites are consistently observed, there is a reason to anchor (one anchor will be enough) and uncover the nodding rod. An inertial reel is preferable because it is more compact and allows for high-speed rewinding. We select the weight of the balancer depending on the strength of the current. For the Volga and Kama, if you do not go to the fairway itself (we are not suicides!), the optimal test at fairway depths and close to them is 25-30 g with a monofilament line with a thickness of 0.25-0.27 with a good test indicator.

The main thing: the balancer must have a light accumulator! As the experience of the author of these lines shows, the greatest success among predators are baits that have a “perch” coloring or something similar to it. The tackle is attached to the main line through a carabiner of a thin tungsten leash (lead length 20-30 cm) with a silicone or plastic coating. You can also try, before connecting the leash to the main line, from the swivel side, put a piece of phosphorescent guard on it (about 1.5-2 cm). When playing with a balance beam, this glowing piece will hit the carabiner, and the clicking sound of the impact in the summer can additionally attract a predator.

If there is no stable bite at one “point”, we sequentially fish all the places where bites were noted on a spinning rod. Or areas of pike “fighting” (the characteristic splashes and blows of the river “she-wolf” cannot be confused with anyone else’s!). You just need to swim to such places and anchor in them with extreme caution, since the noise can easily scare away the fish that the pike preys on.

Fishing with a balancer: if there is no current

In places where there is no current or it is extremely weak (the Volga left bank, channels between islands, small, up to 4-5 m, right-bank depths), you can use smaller balancers, 8-10-15-20 g. The smallest ones are traditionally on perch Here you don’t have to strain too much: there is a series of small solid-cast balancers “for fry”, if the “striped” one is in the mood to eat, it will be taken steadily, checked. However, it is better to leave the fishing line 0.25-0.27 mm: replacing it with a thinner one will not have much effect on the balancer’s performance, but if a large specimen bites, the “vein” may not be able to withstand it!

If there are landmarks of a snag, it’s worth looking for burbot there in the summer. To do this, you will need larger gear - the same 15-20 g of dough mentioned above.

The main advantage of fishing in quiet places is that there is no need to anchor. In order to correct the movements of the boat, a few gentle strokes are enough. Of course, this is provided that there is no big wave or stall wind. However, during big waves, fishing with a balance beam in the summer loses all its attractiveness, since the guard will be constantly moving, which means it will be almost impossible to spot the bite.

⚙ Useful tips

  • Decent catches are brought by fishing from a boat on a balancer in the morning and evening hours. It is at this time of day that the highest activity of the predator is observed, which is manifested by a large number of splashes on the water.
  • If neither the toothy beauty nor the striped robber give themselves away in any way, then you should look for them first next to the grass, and then in its very thick.
  • In winter, the lure's catch depends on how many holes it drills. Lazy people don't catch a lot of fish. In summer it’s the same thing - the more “windows” the angler catches, the better the fishing result.

How to choose the right balancer

Balancers, like any other bait for predatory fish, are presented in a very wide range. They differ in size, color and shape. In any case, having 1-2 pieces in stock and hoping for a positive result is naive. Perch is subject to frequent mood changes, and it is impossible to predict what exactly it will want today. Moreover, in winter the fish becomes more inert, since it uses its energy reserves very sparingly, and it can be difficult to interest it.

The classic balancer consists of an artificial bait with two single hooks (front and back) and a hanging tee on the belly. Most often, the fish grabs the pendant, so to attract its attention even more, beads and colored foam are attached to the tee. The color of the bait should be chosen more natural. Balancers made in the shape and color of a fry perform best. You should not neglect the coloring to resemble a perch; this fish is no stranger to the phenomenon of cannibalism.

Interestingly, sometimes baits with unnatural, irritating colors perform well. They are used in cases of weak or absent bite, when the fish need to be interested and awakened. In general, try to have enough balancers for different conditions.
