Sbirulina fishing technique, types of floats and choice of equipment

Sbirulino (or as it is also called “bombard”) is a special float for spinning fishing, which has its own load and is intended only for loading your light equipment equipped with flies, light twisters and wobblers. Sbirulino is a float similar to a walk-through float, with a line passing through the antenna and body, ending with a stopper and a loop to which a leash is attached. Sbirulino itself is most often one-color (white, matte) or transparent (filled with water, like a water balloon). Weight ranges from a couple of grams to several tens of grams and is available in floating and sinking versions. The main advantage of sbirulino is the ability to send fly fishing or very light spinning baits over very long distances using a spinning rod.

Thanks to sbirulino, you can throw a bait weighing less than a gram over a hundred meters and move it near the surface of the water, in the depths or even along the bottom.

They swim, sink and walk in the middle of the depths. Sbirulino floats are known to sea trout hunters. The Italians were the first to use them for trout fishing. After which they spread throughout Western Europe. Especially popular in Denmark and Germany. Used to catch sea trout from the beach. There are models that can be filled with water until the desired volume is reached.

Sbirulino float: types and types

Sbirulino floats have three types of buoyancy:

  • floating (does not sink in water);
  • medium buoyancy (sinks very, very slowly);
  • drowning (drowning in water).

By choosing a floating sbirulino, you will be placing the bait almost at the surface of the water. While sinking will allow the bait to sink to the bottom.

For spinning, when the angler leads the sbirulino along the surface of the water, and at the same time the float is visible to him and can be used as a bite indicator.

There are also different types of float loading:

  • with built-in lead sinker inside;
  • with a cavity inside the float that is filled with water from the reservoir before fishing.

There is no fundamental difference in the practical application of these varieties.

Bombard

A bombard is a special weighted float through which a fishing line passes. The float itself can be floating (I use exactly these), sinking, and neutral in terms of buoyancy, and have different weights. The scope of their application follows from this. Let's take a closer look at each type of bombard:

Floating bombards

Floating bombards are used to fish on or near the surface. Even if the bait sinks, it still moves on top, far behind the bombard.

Neutral bombards (zero buoyancy)

Zero-buoyancy and slow-sinking models are perhaps the most common. They cover a larger range of reservoir depths, since with them the bait can be cast at different horizons. This allows you to be prepared for any situation.

Sinking Bombards

Fast-sinking bombards are designed primarily for deep water bodies. Typically, these models are not only heavier, but also narrower and more streamlined so that they can quickly sink to depth. They may still have a metal weight in the middle or at the end of their body. Many sinking bombards are marked AFF (Affon-dandi - sinking) and a number from 0 to 7. The higher the number, the faster the bombard sinks. But even among floating and zero-buoyancy models, heavier options have appeared. Their weight of 80–100 g allows you to throw equipment with them against the wind.

When the water temperature rises greatly in summer, the fish move to deeper layers of water. It is also deeper in winter, since the water at depth is warmest. This is the time of sinking bombards. With them you can feed not only natural, but also artificial baits, such as rotating and oscillating spoons, which have to be carried out at an increased speed due to their large mass.

Tackle

rod , from 3 to 5-6 meters. The structure is parabolic, which will allow you to make long casts with a heavy Sbirulino float. The test should not be lower than the weight of the float. Often, 40-50 grams of dough is enough.

The reel is a regular spinning reel (adjusted clutch, spool capacity per 100 meters of line 0.25).

Fishing line - it is better to use braid, because fishing is carried out with a bite on the tip of the rod and you cannot be late with hooking. Braided line does not stretch when stretched and is therefore preferred. But using monofilament is also appropriate.

Sbirulino can come in a variety of sizes, it all depends on the casting distance you need. Typically, floats weighing no more than 40 grams are chosen.

Leash. Fluorocarbon is often used as a leader line due to its invisibility for fish in the water. The length of such a leash is from 1.5 meters to 3 meters. This length is due to the fear that the float may scare the fish, so it should be located away from the bait.

Hooks (subject to fishing with natural bait). Depends on the size of the fish (any of the hooks used should easily fit into the fish’s mouth). And, of course, they must be sharp.

Swivels. The classic rig uses a triple swivel. It provides 100% protection against line twisting. Flies and other lures often twist the line too much. If you don't have a triple swivel, try connecting 2-3 swivels to the fasteners.

What is bombarda (sbirulino)

A fishing bombard is a weighted float of a special shape that allows you to make long casts of light baits. It also has another name - sbirulino float. Most often, the method of fishing with such a device is referred to as spinning fishing, but there are also elements of fly fishing, when flies are delivered to the fishing point.

The buoyancy of the product is regulated by the built-in weight, which allows you to bait at different depths - that is, to fish at different horizons, and the streamlined shape allows you to deliver the equipment over a long distance and cover areas of the reservoir that are unattainable under normal conditions. The bombard is an elongated float and consists of two parts - an egg-shaped body and a tubular axis passing through it. Made from plastic, balsa wood and other materials. The casting range and depth in the water column are adjusted using replaceable or fixed weights.

Initially, such a float was made of transparent plastic, as a result of which even catching trout, a cautious and strong fish, was possible with its help. Then other models appeared with a range of colors, for fishing in the dark and even creating spinner-like vibrations.

Equipment

There are quite a lot of all kinds of equipment with such a heavy float.
With a large number of hooks both before and after sbirulino. But we will look at the classic equipment, and adjusting it to a large number of hooks will not be difficult. Installation of sbirulino:

  1. A sbirulino float is put on the main line.
  2. Then there is a rubber stopper that will prevent the heavy float from hitting the knot that attaches the carabiners to the fishing line.
  3. Behind the stopper there is a swivel or a series of swivels of three pieces (without carabiners you will not be able to connect three swivels manually, so it is best to buy a ready-made chain of three swivels, and it is not recommended to use fasteners, they are too cumbersome), as already mentioned, this prevents crazy twisting the line.
  4. Next is a leash with a length of 1.5 to 3 meters.
  5. A fly or any other bait is tied to the end. Also used as bait is a hook with natural bait (maggot, worm, corn, insects).

This rig has a leash after the sbirulino, but there are rigs in which the sbirulino is the end point of the fishing line , and before it there is a fishing line made of leash material, which has several leashes with flies.

It is possible to load your light bait, such as a fly, with a small lead shot. This will allow you to deepen the fly a little while fishing when fishing on surface sbiruline.

Installation of sbirulino tackle

Actually, it is already clear what the functions of the bombard for sbirulino are: thanks to the weight of the float, the fisherman is able to make a normal cast, and based on the buoyancy of the bombard, it is possible to fish in different water levels.

In addition to this float itself, to install the tackle you will need several swivels (you can get by with just one, although the line may occasionally twist), stop beads, and, well, a leash with bait.

The classic installation of sbirulino is elementary : first of all, the main fishing line (braid) is threaded through the bombard, starting with the tube, then a rubber bead is placed, it acts as a buffer. A triple swivel is attached to the end of the main line, which prevents it from twisting. A leash 1.5–2.0 m long is attached to the swivel. Some people prefer to use a longer leash, but this results in the long end of the line hanging very low when casting. In this case, you will need a rod 3.6–3.9 m long. A hook with a nozzle or an artificial bait is attached to the latter.

Fishing technique

First of all, bombarding still implies surface fishing and you can look for fish in shallow water, or you can catch exclusively riding fish.

An important advantage of this method is that it can be used in trolling and you can use different types of baits.

Lure. When fishing with sbirulino, bait is not always used, but it is really better to collect white fish at one point using bait.

When there is a current, use clay to create a mixture with bait so that the balls do not get carried away by the current. In still water everything is much simpler.

Some fish simply react to inedible dregs. Throw a little sand or light fine soil into the water and the riding fish will quickly come to life at the intended point.

Wiring. After casting, a lot depends on the wiring and there are several wiring styles:

  1. Very slow uniform wiring.
  2. Retrieving with the tip of the rod moving 2-3 meters, then returning to the starting point, reeling in with a reel, the bait is in place at this time.
  3. Slow wiring with twitching.

The frequency and amplitude of twitching must be obtained in practice while fishing. An important parameter is the game of the bait. If the twister you are using does not play with its tail when moving slowly, increase the speed, or make the tail lighter and wriggling.

Classification of bombard models

Due to the large assortment and wide distribution of bombards, you can choose the model that will perform a specific task. This float has another name - sbirulino. They differ in design, buoyancy and loading.

There are 3 types of buoyancy:

  • non-sinking bombards, which are designed to hold gear on the surface of the water,
  • slowly sinking sbirulino, allowing manipulations in the middle water column,
  • sinking floats for underwater wiring.

Due to the “floating” model of the bombard, you can bait close to the edge of the pond. For deep-seated trophy giants, submersible sbirulino should be used.

Floats have 2 types of loading:

  1. Sbirulino, which has a built-in weight. Such a load is considered unregulated, but the mass of the float remains virtually unchanged.
  2. The float is equipped with a special cavity. The advantage of this filling model is that the load can be adjusted by filling the cavity with water.

Making a sbirulino float with your own hands

  1. Any more or less large float for float fishing will be suitable as a sbirulino float. All you have to do is load it with pellets or a more or less large sinker, but make sure that your float does not sink, if, of course, you are aiming to make a floating bombard.
  2. The second way is to make a bombard from polystyrene foam . It can be hard, or it can be soft. To prevent the fish from being scared by the bright white color (and it is known to reflect light very strongly and is most noticeable in the water), try covering such a float with either a dark cloth or painting it with a waterproof black marker.
  3. A sbirulino float can be made from a syringe. You will only need to drill a couple of holes in the opposite sides of the syringe and sbirulino, the main load of which is a cavity filled with water - you are ready.

Until recently, the Sbirulino float was in the shade and was not used by many fishermen. Even now it is not so popular, but it is clearly underestimated. It has no disadvantages, but a lot of advantages. Try it and see for yourself. We will be glad to hear your experience in the comments.

Varieties

Depending on the configuration and weight of the bombard float itself, the sbirulino equipment is divided into groups, the number of which is constantly increasing, and new options are being invented. For example, there are bulk floats.

Balda

One of the options for such equipment can be considered a summer “balda”, which is successfully used on Siberian rivers and was invented long before its Italian counterparts. This cone-shaped tackle is made of wood and weighted with lead. Then, instead of wood, craftsmen began to use foam plastic or wine corks, gluing them together and grinding them into a cone. Usually flies are attached to the leash from behind.

Kinds

All bombards are divided into three main types: floating, sinking, slowly sinking. This is achieved by distributing the load over the body of the float.

  • If the load is located in the lower part, it will sink into the water quickly, a sinking float.
  • If the load is distributed evenly along the entire length, it sinks slowly and works in the middle horizons.
  • The weight located at the edges allows the float to float on the water - floating.

There are several more options for the location of the cargo, these are intermediate positions. It is clear that such diversity is needed to fish different horizons. The branded floats indicate which class the bombard belongs to.

In the video you can see how to improve the tackle for fishing with a bombard:

Special cases – fishing for mullet and trout with a bombard

The gear showed good results when fishing for mullet in the Black Sea. Traditional composition:

  • rod up to 4.5 m long with a sensitive tip,
  • spinning reel up to size 3000,
  • main line with a diameter of 0.25 mm,
  • slowly sinking bombard,
  • bottom stopper,
  • triple swivel,
  • fluorocarbon leader with a diameter of up to 0.18 mm and a length of about a meter.

Either a sea worm or mussel meat is used as bait. Vegetable attachments such as bread crumb or dough are used less frequently.

Trout fishing using such a float is no less exciting. However, such fishing is possible mainly on lakes and ponds where this fish is grown artificially. Under natural conditions, trout are found in mountain rivers of shallow depth and fast flow. In them, the bombard turns out to be useless, since long casts are not required and the float itself can scare away fish in clear water.
