Fishing in September - How and where to fish?
Autumn weather makes adjustments to the life of fish. The water in reservoirs becomes colder and clearer, and the amount of natural food decreases. Fish are forced to actively move around the reservoir in search of food, often going deep into the reservoir. Consequently, autumn fishing in September requires a change in fishing tactics - do not sit in one place, the more places you fish, the higher the result. Be sure to check the deep holes behind the rifts - there are definitely fish there. Long casts and fishing from a boat increase the chances of catching a solid trophy.
Fishing in September has a number of features that a novice fisherman must take into account. For example, which fish bite actively in September, and which ones are no longer particularly tempted by bait. What baits to use and in what weather will fishing be more successful in September. Let's look at some of the intricacies of fishing in September.
- The bite of bream and carp in September gradually worsens and by the end of the month it becomes unpredictable. In warm weather, small bream and crucian carp continue to be caught on bloodworms and worms until the first ten days of October inclusive.
- In September, asp can be caught with float rods using bleak; it is better to do this in rivers at medium depths, mainly near bushes.
- Roach in lakes and ponds can be caught well in September using bloodworms, and perch and small pike using fry.
- In the rivers in September, bottom fishing for chub and ide with frogs continues; fishing is more productive in the first half of the night and early morning hours. The chub also readily takes on gudgeon and chicken intestines. On the riffles, from the second half of the month, burbot begins to catch along with ide and chub. Fishing for burbot is more effective on dark, stormy nights.
- Roach, bream, chub, roach and mainly dace are successfully caught using bloodworms and maggots.
- In the second ten days of September, fishing begins with the autumn feeding of pike in deep places. They catch it with a spinning rod, with mugs, a track and float rods. Pike-perch is caught by vertical spinners using winter spoons in deep, cluttered holes.
- Quiet, cloudy days are the most favorable for fishing in September. Light, drizzling rain does not affect the pike bite.
- In September it is especially interesting to fish with spinning rods, mugs and float rods for fry.
- If the weather is favorable, grasshopper fishing continues on the lakes. In small rivers, fishing with a jig near the shore is interesting. On the riffles at night, you can catch chub and gudgeon if you fish with bottom rods.
In September, the fish stops standing in one place, it begins to walk around the reservoir, lingering more and more often in the depths and visiting shallow water less and less. However, the bite in September may be unstable. This is mainly due to weather conditions and atmospheric pressure, to changes in which the fish are very sensitive.
At the beginning of September, all the fish still live according to the usual summer schedule. The algae have not yet died off, and a lot of natural food can be found among them. Insects fly, fall into the water, or are washed into the reservoir by streams of rainwater.
The predator is also more active in the morning and evening. But as soon as temperature changes begin, the behavior of underwater inhabitants changes radically. It either stands close to the shore, then moves to the depths, then begins to actively peck, then becomes lethargic and motionless.
Be that as it may, with the right choice of fishing location and selection of bait, the angler’s success is still guaranteed.
Fishing for pike in September
The autumn feeding of pike in September ensures successful catching of the toothy predator. In warm September, pike fishing can take place in its favorite summer places. At the edge of the grass, you can catch decent grass pike using small wobblers and spoons. For trophy pike, you should go closer to the depths, to channel edges and dumps, to exits from pits, closer to deep-sea snags and flooded forests on reservoirs. At the depths, pike fishing in September usually occurs from a boat. Fishing methods depend on the chosen body of water. In almost any body of water, a spinning rod, a float rod, mugs and a track can be successfully used. Fishing for pike in September is done with almost any bait; oscillating and rotating spoons, wobblers of all stripes and colors, jigs, etc. are used. In September, pike do not disdain large sizes and willingly “feed” on really large baits.
Fishing for perch in September
In September, perch fishing is more effective in the early morning and evening; it is at this time that the bite is most stable. But perch can also be caught during the daytime, although the activity will be less. Fishing for perch in September is possible both with a spinning rod and a float rod. In September, perch is very active, and you can find it almost anywhere in the reservoir, but nevertheless, fishing for perch in September is best along the shore, on dumps in depth or along a strip of coastal vegetation. And yet, the main way to catch perch in September is spinning fishing. Spinner spoons, small wobblers, as well as twisters and poppers are good baits for catching perch in September. For vertical trolling with summer tackle, a variety of spinners are used: winter perch spinners, balancer spinners, etc. Of the jigs used with this fishing method, the devil, the ant and the uralka have proven themselves well.
Fishing for pike perch in September
Pike perch is a coveted trophy for spinners, and September is considered one of the best periods for fishing for pike perch. Moreover, successful fishing for pike perch continues throughout the month, worsening only in inclement weather with strong winds and sudden changes in pressure. The most intense pike perch bite occurs at night. Lures for fishing for pike perch should be of a narrow, elongated shape, somewhat reminiscent of bleak. Among the live baits, minnows, ruffes, spruces, and small breams are perfect. Wider and larger fish are not as effective, since the pike perch has a small mouth, and it simply cannot swallow such bait. For the greatest efficiency when catching pike perch in September, you can use jig baits. In this case, fishermen carry out stepwise retrieval of the bait near the bottom. Lures can be ordinary foam fish, silicone vibrotails and twisters.
Fishing in September for crucian carp
The beginning of September is mainly characterized by still fairly warm daytime weather. A large number of all kinds of larvae and beetles in the thickets of coastal vegetation effectively attract crucian carp, so fishing for crucian carp in September is more effective in the coastal zone, along the boundaries of aquatic vegetation and among it. It won't hurt to feed the fishing spot. As in the summer, any plant components are suitable for feeding. It is better to use bait of animal origin - better than a worm. Although in some reservoirs maggots may work best. A combination of both baits is also suitable, popularly called a “sandwich”. This concerned the first half of September. But from the middle of the month the situation changes. The water in shallow water does not warm up enough, many crustaceans die off, and after them, aquatic vegetation. Of course, crucian carp leaves the coastal zone and begins to gather in the deep-water areas of the reservoir.
Fishing for bream in September
Fishing for bream in September can be a real pleasure, because at this time the fish bite very well. Bream tries to stay in deep holes, creeks and in places with a muddy bottom. This bottom fish lives mainly in large and medium-sized rivers, as well as in fairly large lakes. Looking for bream in areas with a lot of mud is a futile exercise. As for the bottom holes, they should be large and located at a depth of 5 meters. Throughout September you can successfully catch specimens of different sizes. Excellent fishing for bream is on calm, clear days, especially early in the morning or at sunset. If, on the contrary, the weather is cloudy, windy, but at the same time warm, then you can try your luck during the day by choosing a quiet, secluded place. To make bream fishing more successful in September, you must use bait.
Fishing for carp in September
Fishing for carp in September is considered perhaps the most productive. In calm, windless weather, carp can take almost any bait. And, conversely, on windy and rainy days the fish prefers to hide at the bottom. Fishing for carp in September can begin almost from the very early morning. But to catch this fish, you will have to work hard. For fishing to be successful, it is worth studying the bottom topography well, in particular, knowing the location of large holes. What to use to catch carp in September? Bait at this time of year is absolutely useless - all hope is in the right bait. Fishing for carp in September is more effective for maggots, large earthworms, crayfish meat, bread pellets, boilies, oatmeal porridge with sugar and peanut or cinnamon flavorings, and shellfish are suitable. You can fish with both bottom and regular float rods. Moreover, the float should not be too bright and noticeable so as not to alarm the fish.
Fishing in September for roach
In September, the roach begins to move to depth - the favorite places of the September roach are deep holes with a quiet current at the edges or under steep banks. Fishing for roach in September is more successful using landmarks - look for roach in places with driftwood and snags, tree branches hanging over the water, holes and ruts at the bottom. The main diet of roach in September is usually: bloodworms, worms, all kinds of aquatic larvae, insects that fall into the water with rain. Most of this food is collected at the mouths of streams, ravines and ravines, where small schools of roach rush. When catching roach in September, in addition to traditional baits (worms, maggots, bloodworms, etc.), various summer baits are used (amphip crustacean, caddis fly larva or dragonfly). If it is mainly large roaches that bite, then it is advisable to place several larvae on the hook at a time. An excellent bait is a pupated maggot larva.
To guarantee a guaranteed catch when fishing, we recommend using the appropriate bait and bite activators. This attracts a large number of fish to the fishing grounds and significantly increases the chance of a good catch!

This fishing calendar is suitable for the reservoirs of central Russia, and in the north and south nature lives according to its own laws.
- December
In the first winter month, winter fully comes into its own. There are almost no thaws anymore, but the frosts are getting stronger. Quite a lot of snow falls and a permanent snow cover forms. Unlike the first snow, December snow no longer melts. The ice on lakes and ponds is already strong, but on fast-flowing rivers there may still be dangerous gullies. Fast-flowing bodies of water freeze later than others, so you should be wary of thin ice. It is better to walk along such a river, checking the ice with an ice pick, and you should not step foot at all in areas with springs.
In December you can fish with winter fishing rods with jigs, jigs and spoons. Pike, pike perch and perch are caught using large winter lures and with the help of jigs. Guster, chub, dace, roach, and bream are caught on a fishing rod with a nod or a float. The baits and baits used are the same ones used for November fishing on the first ice. To catch a winning bream or large roach, you should take care of feeding the holes. Store-bought food, regular breadcrumbs mixed with cake and seeds minced through a meat grinder are suitable for this.
Perches look for schools of perches near the shore and in the shallows near aquatic vegetation.
Closer to the New Year, in some reservoirs there is still a good bite, but in others, bites become rare, and soon the activity of the fish completely weakens. At first, fish stop being caught in those reservoirs where there is a lot of algae. They rot, and therefore the amount of oxygen in the water under a thick shell of ice sharply decreases. In flowing waters it bites longer, since there is no lack of oxygen there yet. But you should remember that the weather at the end of December becomes very capricious, and therefore the fish may stop biting everywhere. You should not go fishing when there is a strong north wind and a sharp drop in air pressure.
- January
In the middle of winter, the ice on reservoirs is thickest. Almost all bodies of water, except streams, are covered in ice. This period of winter is called the fishing wilderness. The fish bite very weakly in January. This is primarily due to the widespread lack of oxygen in river and lake water.

In the second month of winter, the days are still very short and the nights are long. There are a lot of frosty and blizzard days. Despite frequent snowstorms, only fans of winter trolling fish do not go fishing at this time. But float anglers don’t sit at home. They still go to the pond, drill holes with an ice drill, look for fish, but often they don’t bite at all. The January frost invigorates them, and in order not to freeze, they drill many holes in search of fish and often drink hot tea from a thermos. But it often happens that the fish were never found. Many people console themselves with the fact that the main thing when fishing is not the fish, but the process of unity with nature and relaxation in the fresh air.
There is no point in being surprised that in January there is no bite at all or the bite is weak. In many places, the fish are passive and cannot be lured even by the most delicious bait.
The rivers and lakes of Russia are rich in aquatic plants. These are reeds, water lilies, sedge, reeds, and all kinds of algae. In the summer this vegetation bloomed vigorously, and by winter they die at the bottom of the reservoir. The rotting process removes precious oxygen from the water. A decrease in oxygen causes oxygen starvation in fish. In those parts of the reservoir where there are a lot of rotting plants at the bottom, the fish are characterized by inactivity and a complete loss of appetite. The holes are made, the fish are there, they are fed, but they don’t want to be caught at all, and the lack of oxygen is to blame. This problem is especially severe in ponds and shallow reservoirs. In rivers and deep lakes, the fish are still easier: there are potholes, and the water is cleaner and flowing. But even in deep reservoirs there is still often a period of prolonged reluctance to catch fish. This is already due to bad weather. The fish do not bite at all when the wind blows from the north, northwest and northeast, as well as when there is a sharp change in atmospheric pressure.
But when the frosts and blizzards end, a thaw sets in with calm and windless weather, then in those reservoirs where there is not much rotting algae, fish begin to bite. It starts early in the morning and can continue throughout the day.
Burbot is an amazing fish. This predator leads a special way of life in January. It begins spawning, so the snake-like fish gathers near stones and pebbles. This fish can be caught even in severe frosts. At the beginning of January, the burbot bite is better than at the end of the month. It is caught on bottom fishing rods; minnows, ruffes and chicken meat are used as bait. Sometimes anglers leave winter donks overnight, dusting the hole with snow. This is due to the fact that night is the best time for biting burbot at any time of the year. In good weather, a fishing rod with a float or nod can be used to catch ruffe, roach, bream, and medium- and small-sized perch. Be sure to feed the hole with bread crumbs, boiled mashed potatoes, porridge and small bloodworms. A chub bites on a small piece of lard in the current. This fish should be looked for in a river with a pebble or sandy bottom. Near steep banks, where the depth is more than a meter, dace, bream and small chub bite well on bloodworms in favorable weather.

Pike continue to be caught using winter lures and jigs. To catch a toothy predator, they look for great depths in a reservoir or lake, or a hole in a river. At dawn and in the evening twilight you can catch pike perch in snags and in deep water.
Experienced fishermen know that you need to fish with lures slowly, taking pauses, and a skillfully presented metal bait often gives results. But young and inexperienced fishermen go to catch perch or pike, but by strongly tugging the spoon they scare away the fish. They do not yet understand that winter lure fishing must be patient.
In January, perch is caught using small spoons, perch eyes and jigs without bait.
Fishing in January is a difficult process. To make it successful, you should not go to unfamiliar places. It’s better to take a partner and go to a well-known section of a river or lake. But it still happens that the route changes for one reason or another. In this case, fishing experience can help. He will tell you exactly where to position yourself to fish. Communication with local fishermen should not be neglected. They can tell you where and how to bite in a new place for you.
Do not forget about your safety on the pond. Despite the bitter cold, there are still dangerous places in the river. It is especially dangerous to walk on ice after heavy snowfall. A thick layer of snow presses on the ice, which sinks. In such areas of the reservoir, a lot of unfrozen water appears on the ice. Therefore, you should be careful to avoid troubles in the form of wet socks.
Near villages and villages, local residents like to make ice holes. Some go winter swimming there, others take water. Such large holes become covered with thin ice after frost, and if a lot of snow falls, the hole becomes invisible. Careless movement and you could end up in the fragile ice of such an ice hole.

Sections of the river where streams and springs flow are also dangerous. There is always thin ice here, even when bad weather is raging. Under the snow cover, you may not even notice the never-freezing spring. You can also fall under fragile ice on rivers with very strong currents. Therefore, a piece of advice that should be remembered in any winter month, and not just in January: if you are walking along a completely unfamiliar body of water, take an ice pick with you and use it to test the strength of the ice in front of you.
- February
February is the last month of winter. The weather at this time is very changeable. Sometimes you can already feel the imminent onset of spring, and sometimes there are thaws. But even more often there are blizzards and blizzards; the temperature, as in January, can drop to the very minimum values.
By the middle of the month, burbot will spawn and begin to bite again after a two-week lull. In February the best bite is at night. A warm tent, a flashlight and a good catch are guaranteed. In those rivers and lakes where there is a significant decrease in water level, pike perch begins to catch well, especially in cold weather. On the contrary, pike bite is observed on warmer days. This toothy predator, which in February is still characterized by a sluggish character, should be looked for in deep water, and live bait should be allowed as close as possible to its mouth.
The perch have seen a significant improvement in their bite. “Stripe” is well caught with a small spoon and a float rod with a bloodworm attached. With the first tackle you can catch a real humpback salmon, and with the fishing rod you can mainly catch medium-sized perches and small perches.
By the end of the winter period, the fish leave their winter camps. They briskly approach the mouths of streams and rivulets that flow into large rivers. In such areas you can catch bream and roach with a jig. Fishermen have noticed that roach bites occur more often during light snowstorms and snowy weather. In the last week of February, when the weather is good, pike perch and bream begin to move. If you guess correctly with the choice of place for fishing, feeding and bait, then fishing success is guaranteed.
In flowing rivers, the bite improves significantly this month. But on lakes where there is a lot of vegetation and no current, there may still be a dead winter. This is still associated with a lack of oxygen in the water, and this problem is aggravated after heavy snowfalls, a constant alternation of frosty days and thaws. In such closed lakes, fish deaths often occur.
