Catching grayling with a Tyrolean stick. Tyrolean stick: how to catch

What is a Tyrolean Stick?

Let's figure out what a Tyrolean stick is and how fish such as grayling are caught with it. Firstly, it is immediately worth noting that fish such as grayling are found in rivers with strong currents.

There are several other names for such equipment: ballerina, jumper, etc. The Tyrolean stick is a type of sinker that, when fishing for grayling, does not allow the fly to float up, but holds it at the bottom.

It also happens that a jig is used instead of a fly, but this is very rare, since fishing with a fly is much better and more effective.

Grayling fishing

Each angler has a large stock and assortment of flies, as well as various equipment that can be used in combination with the “Tyrolean stick”. And when the bite is weak, or there is none at all, then changing equipment and new flies for catching grayling greatly helps the angler.

Why a Tyrolean stick, and not the same weight that is used for catching predatory fish on a Wobbler or Jig head?

This is all due to the fact that grayling has very good Vision, and the equipment prepared for catching grayling should be much more elegant and more plausible than for catching other predatory fish.

Grayling is a fastidious fish, and pays attention, starting from the appearance and ending with the natural behavior of the bait.

How to make a Tyrolean stick with your own hands

As you understand from the appearance of the Tyrolean stick, its production will not take much of your time. We will need:

  • Hollow tube (plastic 15-20 cm)
  • Weight (lead or bolt matched to the tube).
  • Waterproof glue (can be silicone).
  • Swivel with latch.

On the one hand, we place a weight on the glue so that there are no holes in the hollowness of the tube. And we grease the other side with 0.5-1 cm of glue and compress it in a vice or using a clothespin. When it is sealed, we punch a hole into which we will insert the swivel on the latch. The whole stick is ready.

If you have the necessary materials, you can easily make the wand yourself.

Tyrolean PVC pipe:

  1. First you need to find a piece of PVC pipe (the thinner the walls, the better).
  2. Using waterproof glue, attach a bolt of suitable size to one end of the tube.
  3. We drip a little of the same glue inside the second end of the tube and squeeze this end with pliers.
  4. Then we make a small hole in the compressed and glued part of the tube using an awl.
  5. We thread a clasp for attaching a match float or a carabiner with a swivel.

These tubes are made from different materials: some are made of transparent vinyl chloride, others use lead tubes, in a word, who knows what, the main thing is that it is beautiful and of high quality.

Many people try to somehow decorate a wand by passing a wisp of rain through it; some paint lead tubes with black varnish. I wouldn’t recommend doing the latter, since it’s not durable, and all your paint will peel off in no time, hitting the lying stones and soil at the bottom.

Grayling fishing

You shouldn’t pay too much attention to the color of the sinker, it’s not that important. It is important to select its size and weight for the specific place where you are going to catch grayling.

By loosening the top loop, you can adjust the position of the Tyrolean stick on the rig. If the bottom is in a fishing area with numerous hooks, then this adjustment is a great help and you won’t have to lose your flies. Although our fly is located slightly above the sinker, and therefore hooks are extremely rare.

In what cases is Tyrolean appropriate?

By using such an accessory, you can combine the two most popular methods of catching fish: spinning and bottom. It is especially loved by fans of spinning rods, since the bait on the hook, accompanied by a stick, allows you to display the movements of small fish in the water. The nozzle seems to be gliding along the bottom, and not just crawling, as in other fishing equipment.

Using a wobbler together with a Tyrolean allows you to make leashes in which the likelihood of snagging is reduced. The small weight of the stick facilitates casting the bait over long distances. In addition to wobblers, you can install any other attachments on the hooks, both plant and animal origin. The principle of using equipment is similar to the method with retractable leashes, but it is more accurate and reliable, and fishing with such equipment is more comfortable. Other advantages of the gear are:

  • effective supply of bait or bait at shallow depths;
  • use not only with a spinning rod, but also with a regular telescope rod;
  • the equipment does not get tangled or overlap.

How to Catch Grayling with a Tyrolean Stick?

Depending on the choice of fishing location, and the nature of the fish living in this place, catching grayling with a Tyrolean stick can be successful, both with regular fishing and with twitching.

In most cases, the grayling is located far from the shore, where the current is stronger between the water stones, but it also happens that it chases the bait right up to your feet, but this is extremely rare.

Grayling fishing

The grayling bite is uncharacteristic, and can easily be confused with the usual knock of a sinker on the bottom. With experience, you will easily begin to distinguish a bite from a false one.

The farther away from the shore the place where grayling gathers, the heavier you need to hang the Tyrolean stick and the more difficult it will be to distinguish a high-quality bite from the usual knock of the sinker on the bottom.

Grayling habitats

Grayling does not live in shallow water and usually bites only far from the shore (“in the current”). Therefore, for long distance casting it is better to use a heavy Tyrolean stick. But pay attention - there is a possibility that some of the bites will not be noticeable.

Grayling is practically not found in shallow waters. This fish prefers medium depths and bites best at a decent distance from the river bank, “in the stream.” For these reasons, you will need a long cast, which can be achieved with a Tyrolean stick with a large weight. When using a heavy sinker stick, it is important to know that it will be more difficult to feel a bite in such conditions.

Experienced fishermen who have repeatedly dealt with grayling also advise looking for this fish in places behind rocky rifts, where deep areas abruptly give way to shallows.

Carolina wisdom

"Carolina" equipment is an analogue of conventional cargo. The design provides space for a mast-type float. Replacing the lead weight with a Tyrolean weight increases the permeability of the gear in muddy water and in areas with a hard rocky bottom. It has also proven itself when fishing in places with strong currents.

Regardless of the type of installation, one must remember that the effectiveness of using such equipment depends on the ability to make leisurely movements, slowly moving the stick along the bottom and twitching the rod in a timely manner.

Tyrolean sticks: production and installation

In fishing stores it is not always possible to find equipment with the necessary parameters, but making a Tyrolean stick with your own hands is such a simple process that it can be done at home without complex schemes. Installation of the Tyrolean stick is quite simple, for this you will need:

  • transparent tube made of soft plastic;
  • a metal bolt (lead) of the required weight and diameter passing into the cylinder hole;
  • swivel with a secure latch;
  • waterproof glue.

The weight is lowered inside the tube on one side and glued so that there is no free hole left in the hollowness of the cylinder. The opposite side is lubricated from the inside with glue at a distance of up to 1 cm and clamped in a vice (or using a clothespin). After the adhesive has dried, a hole is punched in the clamped section of the tube, into which a swivel is inserted with a secure latch.

Among fishermen, there are two options for installing this tackle: using it as an end sinker and using the Carolina rig.

Tyrolean weight

In the first case, one (sometimes several shortened leashes) is adapted, securing it in front of a plastic stick at a short distance. The length of the undergrowth cannot be greater than the size of the Tyrolean itself. The attachment on the hooks should be relatively light, otherwise their weight will make the use of the stick inappropriate. When choosing hooks, it is preferable to choose small models.

What types of fish are caught by the Tyrolean?

The equipment is used for fishing for large predators such as pike, grayling, pike perch, and perch. Most often, it is grayling that becomes the object of hunting by adherents of this small tackle. The successful use of Tyrolean fish for grayling depends on the choice of fishing location and the nature of the individuals living in a particular body of water. As a rule, this fish prefers places far from the shore, where there is a strong current and there is an opportunity to hide behind rocks. He has good eyesight, so the equipment for grayling should be more elegant than for catching other species. The further the flock of predators is from the shore, the heavier the Tyrolean fish should be on them.

When fishing for grayling with Tyrolean tackle, especially in the fall, its bite differs from that of other predators. Grabbing can easily be confused with the sound of a weight hitting the bottom. And only after several trips for this fish can you learn to recognize a real grayling attack from a false one.

Methods of application and bait

This type of fishing was invented in Europe for hunting trout in small rivers with strong currents. Casting a fly or guiding a microscopic wobbler at the required depth is achieved precisely with the help of a Tyrolean bait. Having demonstrated excellent results in trout fishing, it was decided to introduce this tackle into fishing for such fish as chub, perch, pike perch, pike and, of course, grayling.

The following types of baits can be used with its help:

  • wobblers (both floating and suspended);
  • silicone tips without additional shipping;
  • flies, nymphs;
  • natural baits (worms, larvae, beetles).

They fish for the Tyrolean fish using a spinning rod. His test depends on the weight of the sinker itself. It is better to use cord as the main fishing line, and knit leashes from high-modulus monofilament that does not have “memory” or fluorocarbon. The advantage of the latter lies in the refractive spectrum under water, which prevents the sharp vision of a predator from noticing the tackle, and the rigidity of the material reduces the twisting of the entire structure.
