Fishing for this peaceful fish can be called one of the most popular among domestic fishermen. It captivates not only beginners, but also professionals in this matter. However, despite its popularity, such fishing is not as simple as it seems at first glance. Let's look at the main features of such fishing.

Crucian carp on a float

How to choose the right fishing line

When going fishing, you should prepare your gear. It must be said that it does not matter at all whether you use a float rod for crucian carp, or a donka, a feeder or something else. None of these devices can do without fishing line, which should be selected in advance. The selection is not difficult, the main thing is to know what kind of fish you will be fishing for and with what gear. Since we are already talking about crucian carp, it will be taken as an example.

Crucian carp is a bottom-dwelling specimen, the weight of which usually does not exceed 2 kg. Although the majority of fish are never heavier than 200-300 grams. Therefore, we can safely say that this fish is small. In addition, the crucian carp very carefully grabs the bait. If we take, for example, into account another river inhabitant, such as carp, then the crucian carp will not resist so actively and try to leave. Therefore, the fishing line, accordingly, will be selected differently. In addition, crucian carp pays attention to rough equipment, noticing it and swimming away.

From all this we can conclude that the line for catching crucian carp should be:

  • Quite thin, with a cross-section of about 0.14-0.20 mm.
  • Unnoticeable.
  • Durable.
  • Elastic but resistant to deformation.

Recommendation for float gear

You also need to take into account the gear that will be used. For a float fishing rod, you need to buy a fishing line whose diameter does not exceed 0.16 mm. You need to understand that the equipment does not contain a heavy feeder or weight. If long casting is not provided, then again it is necessary to take a thin element; there is no need for a thick one.

It’s a completely different matter to tackle the long fence. In this case, you cannot do without a thick fishing line. The reason is still the same - the decent weight of the sinker and feeder, which sometimes reaches up to 100 grams. In order to throw all this cargo and then pull it out, you need to be confident in the strength of the fishing line. Therefore, the thickness of the fishing line for a cork or crown should be about 0.3 mm. If a feeder is used, it is advisable to use monofilament with a cross-section from 0.18 to 0.25 mm.

Fishing line for crucian carp

What fishing line is needed to catch crucian carp, you ask? Experts in this type of fishing advise choosing a transparent or slightly shaded monotype of fishing line. Yes, this thread is inferior to braided thread in terms of breaking strength, but it has a big advantage - it is very difficult to notice in water. And this is very important when fishing for crucian carp. The fact is that this fish is sooooo careful. In addition to invisibility, the shock-absorbing properties of such a fishing line will help pull particularly stubborn crucian carp out of the water without leaving.

The thickness of such a fishing line should be approximately from 0.12 mm to 0.14 mm. It all depends on what kind of crucian carp you plan to pull from the pond. In any case, a properly selected good fishing line for catching crucian carp on a float is almost half the battle.

Line stretchability

Monoline has much higher elongation than braided line, which gives advantages in fishing for crucian carp. But there are days when the crucian carp bites very carefully, and you cannot see the bite; the reason for this may be the excessive stretchability of the monofilament line, due to which the bite is not visible.

This problem becomes even more complicated if fishing occurs at a distance of over 30 meters. Therefore, it is worth having a braided fishing line in stock, which better transmits the bite.

Line stretchability

The fishing line from the Carp Expert company is very stretchable, it stretches very much, and therefore it is not recommended to use such a fishing line for catching cautious crucian carp at long distances, but for catching carp it is just right, since the carp bites very powerfully and you cannot miss its bite.

Important! Over a year of intensive use, fishing lines lose 30-50% of their strength, so before the new season, check the fishing line for tearing and possibly replace it with a new one.

After fishing, we recommend cutting off the end of the fishing line, about a meter. This must be done because during the fishing process, the fishing line can rub against stones and the bottom, and at the point of rubbing, the fishing line loses strength. This is especially important for bottom fishing in rocky bottom conditions.

Hooks for crucian carp

When fishing for crucian carp, the hook should have a short shank. Its blade should be slightly bent to the side. The fact is that crucian carp often does not swallow the hook deeply, and it is easiest to put a piece of bread or maggot on such a hook.

Fishing hooks

The thickness of the wire for making a hook is at least 0.3 mm. As for the number, you need to choose it based on the fishing conditions on the float. Any fishing store will tell you that the hook number is selected depending on the size of the crucian carp and the size of the bait used. There is even some opinion that this fish is an esthete. And if the “dish” is served improperly, then you can easily end up without bites.

Monoline or braided line

What fishing line do experienced fishermen recommend using when fishing for crucian carp? Monofilament or braided? A lot here is determined by what gear you plan to fish with.

If this is a feeder, then it is more rational to install a braided line. It helps to cast longer, which is important when fishing with English donkey. The braided cord practically does not stretch, so there is an increased chance that, having tried the bait, the fish will hook itself. This is another big plus. Of course, one cannot help but note the greater strength of the braided line with the same diameter as monofilament fishing line.

For float gear, the best option is monofilament. Firstly, its cost is significantly lower than that of braided cord. Secondly, it has greater stretchability and elasticity. But for fishing with a fishing rod from the shore, this is not a problem, because it is easier for the angler to determine the bite and make a hook. Due to the fact that monofilament stretches longer, it is sometimes easier to pull out large fish using the gear equipped with it. If there is a braided line, then you need to hook it less sharply, otherwise you can tear off the crucian carp’s lip.

Each type of fishing line has its own advantages and disadvantages. The easiest way is to have in your arsenal gear that contains both monofilament and braid. There are days when fishing is more successful with a braided line, when, on the contrary, with a monofilament line.

For example, in the summer the bites of crucian carp are barely noticeable and the increased elasticity and stretchability of the fishing line do not make it possible to see that the fish is interested in the bait. Especially if fishing takes place at great depths. Whereas tackle with a braided cord becomes more informative. It seems that it only bites on one fishing rod. In fact, the fisherman simply does not notice the bites due to certain properties of the fishing line.

Bait for crucian carp

We remind you that crucian carp is a special fish in terms of caution and choice of “dishes”. Most fishermen are aware of its vagaries in the choice of smells, bait, as well as bait and attachments. The feeding preferences of crucian carp change almost every day. While fishing you may encounter this phenomenon. In the morning he pecks at the worm, and in the evening give him only maggots. Therefore, when choosing bait, always focus on several options, even if you are going to one body of water.

Lure for crucian carp

Now let's look at the types of baits for crucian carp.

Plant origin:

  • Barley (boiled or steamed). In most cases, crucian carp reacts extremely positively to it.
  • Semolina. Preferred for catching large specimens. Small crucian carp almost does not react to it.
  • Dough. You can use not only those made from rye flour, but also those made from oatmeal or wheat. Some fishermen add a little flavoring to it when preparing the dough.
  • Canned corn. In most cases, carp react to this bait, but crucian carp, especially large ones, are not averse to playing with it.

Animal origin:

  • Bloodworm. Like any other peaceful fish, crucian carp loves to eat bloodworms. However, this bait has one significant drawback - the bloodworm on the hook dies relatively quickly. In this regard, most lovers of fishing for crucian carp with a float attach a more active and long-lived maggot to the bloodworm.
  • Worm (red). An interesting bait that can be fished almost all year round. However, fishing with a red worm is especially effective before the start of the spring spawning of fish. Sometimes, to increase catchability, fishermen add plant-based bait to the worm on the hook. Alternatively, this is a grain of steamed pearl barley.
  • Maggot. Small fish are not always able to swallow this bait. A large one can eat maggots, but this bait does not cause much enthusiasm in him.

Artificial origin:

  • Boilies. Borrowing from carp fishing. Used for catching large crucian carp and small carp.
  • Silicone (edible). Borrowed from spinning fishing. Came to crucian fishing using a spinning rod. Imitations of worms and bloodworms are often used.

Choosing a float for a fishing rod

When catching crucian carp with a float rod, a telescopic rod is suitable - 4-5 meters long.

Float for crucian carp

The main requirement for such gear is sensitivity. The fact is that the bite of crucian carp can be very whimsical, so the float must react to the slightest touch of the nozzle.

Floats for crucian carp

The choice of the float itself is a very responsible matter. It should be light and have a load capacity of no more than 1-2 grams.

The shape of the float is selected based on the following criteria:

  • Inverted drop. Floats with this shape will be an excellent choice on small lakes or rivers where weak currents prevail. This type of float is highly sensitive to bite.
  • Olive. If there is a light wind on the reservoir and the current speed is average, then this form of float is your choice.
  • Goose feather. The most classic version of a float for crucian carp. When choosing this float, success is almost guaranteed.

We’ve decided on the shape, now let’s talk about the size of the antenna, as practice shows that this is also one of the important parameters. The length and diameter of the antenna depends on the casting distance. At close range, bites are clearly visible with any antenna, but on long casts, floats with replaceable antennas of different colors and brightness will help you.

Popular fishing lines

There is a wide range on the market, the choice of models is huge. The main manufacturers of this product are in Japan, Germany, and the USA. In recent years, competition has been created by Chinese and domestic fishing line companies, which are constantly improving the quality of their products.

When purchasing fishing threads, you must carefully study the instructions on the packaging, since the manufacturer’s name may not correspond to the declared brand.

JcgLine Ultra Light

Braided multi-filament line, made in Japan, awarded Best Line at the International Fishing Show. The product is based on particularly strong PE gel threads. The high density of the weave makes it possible to increase strength and wear resistance in comparison with analogues. The stretch of the cord is insignificant. The round cross-section, a special three-layer coating (developed by the manufacturer), provides special ease of sliding, increases abrasive resistance, increases the strength of the cord in the knot, protects against ultraviolet rays and exposure to salt water.

Jigline
The braid is suitable for maximum long casts. The cord retains its original quality at temperatures from -5° to +40°C. Colors green, orange.

Bait for crucian carp

The main task of bait for crucian carp is to create an attractive bait site. The main secret of ideal bait is that it should lure the fish and cause in it an acute feeling of hunger, provoking the desire to grab the bait.

Bait for crucian carp

Dear fishermen, within the framework of this article we will not consider this issue in detail, since we have already published an article on bait for crucian carp.

Types of fishing line

Fishing line for crucian carp can be of several types:

  • Monofilament. It is a single cast thread made of nylon, polyethylene and other polymers. It is characterized by rigidity and elasticity. It stretches well under load. You can buy it at any store. Moreover, the price for monofilament is always lower than for other types of fishing lines.
  • Braided (multi-filament). This type of fishing line is very durable. In its structure, braiding is a set of thin threads intertwined in a special way. It is least susceptible to deformation and stretching. The cost is several times higher than that of monofilament fishing line.
  • Fluorocarbon. It is made from high-tech materials that give it a number of unique properties. For example, invisibility in water due to the low refractive index of light. This fishing line is very elastic and is practically not subject to bending or deformation. However, it can withstand light loads and is more often used for mounting leashes.

When to go fishing for crucian carp

Experienced fishermen bite on crucian carp almost all year round, even when the neighbors are quiet. This can be explained primarily by the subtlety of the selection of gear, skillful hooking of fish and the calm and quiet behavior of the fisherman on the shore.

Morning fishing

As a rule, crucian carp bites are most active with the first rays of the sun, and until 10-11 o’clock in the afternoon. However, we should not forget that this fish is sensitive to the weather, which means that even during the day it is quite possible to catch a crucian zhor. So, if right before your outing for crucian carp there was a spring rain, and then warm summer weather set in. If you arrive at this time, it means that you will definitely have several “golden ones” in your cage.

Selection depending on the fishing method

The selection is related to the characteristics of the fishing gear. Crucian carp is caught with various rods: float, bottom, spinning, feeder. For each, you need to choose the right type and diameter. It should be noted that even with the correct use of fishing thread, once a year it is necessary to update the fishing line on the tackle due to its wear, the average of which is 30-50% for various brands. Fishing for crucian carp using a float.

Float rod

The optimal fishing line for crucian carp on a float rod is monofilament with a diameter of 0.1 - 0.16 mm. Fishing, most often from the shore, involves catching individuals of 200-300 g. The elasticity and stretchability of the monofilament does not prevent anglers from determining the bite by the float and hooking. The low cost of monofilament retains its attractiveness.

Feeder

Long-distance casting rods are usually equipped with heavy weights and feeders. Accordingly, you should use monofilament of a larger cross-section or a strong braided cord. The recommended size of monofilament for the feeder is 0.18 - 0.3 mm, braiding is 0.12 - 0.14 mm.

Crucian carp on a feeder rod
Crucian carp on the feeder

Fishermen use both options based on preferences and fishing conditions. Braid has virtually no stretch compared to monofilament, so the chances of self-cutting increase. The advantage of the cord is also manifested in greater strength with an equal diameter. Fishermen fishing from the shore at a distance of up to 50 meters prefer monofilament, since the best sensitivity is a priority.

Spinning

Fishing with a spinning rod is carried out with casts over long distances, with a heavy load. Hunting involves catching large fish. Braided cord is a more reliable equipment option for both casting bait and fishing for a trophy.

The braid does not stretch and does not scare away cautious crucian carp. The recommended size is 0.2 mm in diameter. The cord for the leash is made a little thinner, a cross-section of 0.1 mm is suitable.

Donka

When equipping bottom gear, it is recommended to use monofilament with a diameter of 0.18 - 0.3 mm, although braid can also be used. Monofilament leads in popularity for donks due to their low price and variety of colors. Precise selection of the shade of the thread helps ensure that the equipment becomes invisible to crucian carp and other underwater inhabitants.

How to recognize a crucian bite

Crucian carp bites in its own way. After catching him several times, you will easily begin to distinguish his habits. According to generalized data, the entire process of biting it can be divided into three stages:

Stage #1:

Grade. Crucian carp is a “sniffing” fish. He has a naturally keen sense of smell. Therefore, you can attract him not only with standard, but also with specific smells. For example - kerosene.

So, the fish sees the bait, comes up and starts “sniffing”. Therefore, at this time it is advisable not to actively loom on the shore and not make noise. By the way, there is a belief that trophy fish, which have extensive experience in “escaping” from the hook, will circle around the bait they like for a very long time and evaluate its smell.

Stage #2:

The crucian carp liked the bait, it's time to try it. If the bait is large, the crucian carp will pinch it off in small portions until there is a piece left on the hook of a size that would easily fit into the fish’s mouth. During this time, the float will shake and rise and fall slightly. We muster our will and wait. You can hook, but it may not bring results. The fact is that all the bait has not even been in the fish’s mouth yet.

Stage #3:

The main thing here is not to oversleep. The crucian carp swallows the rest of the bait, at this time the float makes several rises, after which it can lie on its side or go to the side. It's time to hook!

Caught a crucian carp

For float rods

Flywheel

Let's start looking at fishing rod options with the simplest fly fishing rod, which we use to catch our favorite crucian carp from the shore or boat. In this case, exclusively monofilament fishing line is used, because blind tackle requires additional shock absorption, which is provided by the stretchability of the monofilament.

The diameter of the main line should be 0.10-0.14 millimeters. If carp is expected to bite, the thickness can be increased to 0.16-0.18. Leashes on thin fishing lines can be neglected, and the hook can be knitted directly to the working cord. On fishing lines with a diameter of 0.14 millimeters or more, the leader monofilament is placed 0.02-0.04 thinner than the main one.

Bolognese and match

We have combined these float rods into one section because the use of fishing lines in them is identical. This is either a braided cord with a diameter of 0.08-0.12 millimeters, or a monofilament from 0.14. A thin vein will allow you to cast longer than a thick one. For these types of fishing, special nylon soft fishing lines are also produced.

We select the leader material in the same way as in the fly tackle - two to four hundredths of a millimeter thinner than the main cord.

Expert's comments

Nikita Dupin (ndup), sports fisherman, representative of the FishingSib float fishing team, organizer of sporting events on fishing topics:

— There are a lot of places in Novosibirsk where catching crucian carp in the spring is a pleasure. Starting from lakes and water meadows, ending with Ob channels and flooded bushes. As for my favorite place, I’m not averse to catching crucian carp in the summer within the city - this is the pit on the Gorsky railway station. Within the city limits, according to my observations, crucian carp bite best on a worm; sometimes I use semolina and Chinese dough as bait, especially on lakes. Don’t forget about bloodworms; it’s especially good to catch them in reservoirs where there are no roaches and other small fish that love them very much.

Dear lovers of float fishing, who are just getting acquainted with this issue - we hope that this selection of facts and tips has helped you and the summer fishing season will bring you trophy crucian carp.

How to choose the right gear

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2uGcBLMgZ_c

For spinning fishing, your choice should be in favor of braided line.

If you fish with a feeder or bottom tackle, both braid and monofilament are suitable. With braid, the bite will be better visible. A stiffer braided cord will allow for maximum contact with the tackle. Also, a thin and light cord will allow the feeder to fly further. At the same time, a soft and highly extensible monofilament will greatly help when hooking. The fish's lips will remain intact and there will be fewer escapes.

What is the best fishing line for crucian carp and how to choose it

It is definitely better to tie a monofilament for catching crucian carp on float rods. It is not necessary to install fluocarbon on them. Monofilament will work well and will cost less.

When choosing a fishing line for a fishing rod, the price of the issue will also be important. It is known that the price of braided cords is several times higher than the price of monofilament.

Nobody wants to end up with a break right next to the shore or not see a single bite. All this can happen due to an incorrectly equipped float rod. Its design contains both very important elements and secondary ones that do not affect the process. We suggest that you familiarize yourself with the main parameters, taking into account which you will definitely be ready for fishing and will not be disappointed in it.

There are 2 main types of fishing rods:

  • Flywheel. It does not have a reel, the line is tied to the last leg. It is used by more advanced fishermen due to its design features. It is less common, but the next type is more common.
  • Bologna. A familiar telescopic rod, with guides and a reel seat. The most common and universal option. Conveniently folds for transportation, easy to assemble and equip. We recommend using this type. It will allow you to catch both peaceful and predatory fish.

The second important parameter is the length of the fishing rod. For those who have no fishing experience, it is difficult to determine the dimensions. Experienced fishermen know: the longer the rod, the better and more versatile it is. Therefore, 5-6 meters is ideal, allowing you to fish any water area. The only negative is the difficulties that arise on overgrown banks, where there are a lot of trees and tall bushes.

Good inertia reel

If you catch crucian carp only in such places, then it is better to have a second equipped fishing rod 3-4 meters long. In other cases, feel free to take from 5 meters. Weight is important, especially when you have to hold the form in your hand. Unfortunately, the lighter the weight, the more expensive the cost, but believe me, it's worth it. Those who fished with the first Chinese telescopes and switched to new technologies appreciated them.

But you can always go the other way by purchasing several spears that will allow you not to strain yourself. The material of manufacture is not critical; now all fishing rods are the same, plus or minus. We do not recommend taking the cheapest option if the goal is durability and convenience (lightness). In other cases, all this is not important, because it does not directly affect the catch.

How to choose a reel

When equipped, 2 types of coils are used:

  • Inertialess. Today, manufacturers offer a lot of compact, lightweight, almost weightless inertia-free devices. The time when only bulky feeder reels were used is over. For example, their weights start from 160 grams, and their cost starts from 1,400 rubles. Not every available float rod weighs less than 200 grams, except for models costing about 5,000 rubles.
  • Inertial. Classic round spools, with different diameters. They have different prices, but the simplest ones cost about 100 rubles. He will cope with our tasks with a bang.

Now for some advice. If you already have a reel, no matter what, feel free to equip your fishing rod with it. The fact is that crucian carp does not require a specific brand, color or size. He doesn't care at all, it doesn't affect the catch in any way. The rest is convenience and comfort. If you are willing to pay for it, buy lightweight models of inertia-free models. They make it easy to make long casts and quickly reel in the line when biting.

Thanks to the clutch, the chances of coping with large crucian carp increase when there is sensitive gear and there is a high chance of breakage. But even the simplest Chinese machine can cope with these tasks. Yes, it will be heavy and with backlashes, it may not lay the line very well, but you can live with all this. Having the funds, feel free to choose a model that is more expensive, lighter and more reliable. It will last you a long time.

Float for crucian carp

There are fewer requirements for non-income earners. The main thing is that it has a larger diameter. From 80 mm will be a good choice. If bearings are present, the ease and smoothness of movement increases. The fishing line winds and rewinds faster and weighs little. We advise you to take those models that do not have a gap between the spool and the body. This occurs in older models, especially metal ones.

Because of this gap, the line begins to wrap around the bolt that holds the spool. After this, everything becomes so confusing that sometimes only re-equipment helps. Now all fishing stores have plastic spools, absolutely without micro gaps. Thanks to this, it is devoid of previous disadvantages, has low weight and high reliability.

You should not immediately use a thickness of 0.3 mm in the hope of catching a large crucian carp. Such excessive strength can negatively affect the bite. Especially on days when the fish are wary. It is much more correct to equip the fishing rod with fishing line 0.16-0.20 mm thick, additionally tying a leash. This ensures high reliability and sensitivity of the gear.

Most crucian carp baits attract all carp species. If there are large individuals in the reservoir, then they may also approach, you need to be prepared for this. When this is very rare, and the reservoir is a small peat lake, then feel free to set a diameter of 0.16 with a leash of 0.12-0.14 mm.

Selected depending on the conditions:

  1. A still body of water without wind. Ideal conditions, this is what we all go fishing for. Place a light float of 2-3 g, with a body in the form of a thin spindle and a long antenna. Thanks to this, any, even the most careful bite will be noticeable.
  2. On the current. For medium flow, a weight of 4-8 grams is ideal. The shape is flat or teardrop-shaped.
  3. In windy weather. The most difficult conditions that reduce the visibility of crucian carp bites. Light signaling devices will shake so much that you won’t be able to understand anything. At the same time, it is important to maintain sensitivity without making the tackle too rough. We advise you to try the drop form, weighing from 4-6 grams. If this is not enough, then increase the load capacity to 8 grams or higher.

To be prepared for all conditions, you need to have 5-6 spare floats of different shapes and lifting capacity. This will allow you to quickly re-equip the float to adapt to the conditions. Do not use alarms that are too heavy unnecessarily, you will miss too many bites.

It is best to choose from the carp series, with thin wire. Follow the rule: use a different hook for each bait. Pay attention to its sharpness. Ideally, it should be completely replaced after one fishing trip. We do not recommend sharpening it yourself. Maintaining the correct sharpening angle at home is almost impossible, especially for small sizes. By constantly replacing hooks you will achieve excellent hooking performance.
