Mepps Syclops is one of the best spinners in the world, with a superbly crafted shape.
Ancient prototypes similar to this lure have practically not survived in our time. Mepps Syclops inherited from them a double deflection in the horizontal projection, which ensures maximum resemblance to the movements of live fish when retrieving. The spinner does not have a soft profile; its shape is formed by the conjugation of planes, including those that form a “stability rib” in the tail section, which guarantees Mepps Syclops stable play, without “slips,” both in calm water and at any current speed. Thanks to an ideally located center of gravity and a favorable ratio between weight and area of the bait, all sizes of Mepps Syclops maintain excellent performance even in free fall after the retrieval is stopped. As you know, when fishing for salmon and pike, this technique can be indispensable. In addition, the effect of the movement of the spinner is significantly enhanced by the play of light reflected by the planes.
Mepps Syclops spinner colors
The standard version of the Mepps Syclops spinner is available in silver, gold and black, with a red and black reflex pattern. In addition, Meps produces spinners decorated with a yellow sticker with a red design. Meps Cyclops is an almost ideal bait for all types of predatory fish in all bodies of water and under any fishing conditions.
The complex profile has ten facets of light reflection. Its movement, thanks to ideal oscillations in various planes, very accurately imitates a living fish - the ideal prey of a predator. Stability of the game is guaranteed at any wiring speed. This characteristic feature makes it easier to quickly cover large areas of still water (pike, pike perch, perch), and provides convenient fishing in the current (salmon, brown trout, trout).
Today we will talk about one very famous spinning bait, the Mepps Syclops oscillating spoon. This is a very popular and, most importantly, extremely catchy spoon.
It is clear that the Meps designers put a lot of effort into the geometry of the Syclops spinner. The action of this bait is original and very effective in seducing predators. I know quite a few fellow spinners whose Mepps Syclops spinner takes first place in their personal rankings. I know several characters for whom this is the only oscillating spoon in the box... (they are just wobblers or jiggers, but they still recognize the merits of the Cyclops). These facts speak volumes...
Size range
The Cyclops model range is extensive. With 5 different length options, Syclops is capable of catching almost any fish. The vibrator is available in the following variations:
- Mepps Syclops 00 (40 mm, 5 grams). An excellent ultralight lure attracts many types of predatory fish. Conditionally predatory fish such as ide, chub and even trout often fly at it. The smallest of the “Cyclops” shows excellent results on small rivers and streams;
- Mepps Syclops 0 (50 mm, 8 grams). Zero is an absolute all-rounder. Perch and medium-sized grass pike are potential victims of this “cyclops” size, as are large chub and ide;
- Mepps Syclops 1 (60 mm, 12 grams). One is the classic size for catching predators. You can catch almost any predatory representative of the underwater world of various sizes with it;
- Mepps Syclops 2 (75 mm, 17 grams). The deuce is rightfully considered a lure. For targeted pike fishing this is the best choice;
- Mepps Syclops 3 (90 mm, 26 grams). Three is good for deep fishing. A working option for catching really large fish, especially pike and asp.
Optimal wiring of the Meps Cyclop spinner
The gameplay features of the Syclops spinner are impressive. The spoon waddles beautifully at the lowest fishing speeds; darts unpredictably from side to side when dribbling quickly; hovers temptingly when diving, during pauses. It is not surprising that at all these three stages of working underwater, Cyclops lures attract a predator.
The colors of Mepps Cyclops vibrators are very diverse. These are natural colors: Silver, Gold, Copper, with a characteristic pattern; as well as bright, acidic colors.
Mepps Syclops spinners in Silver color are most appropriate on rivers where the main food of the predator is narrow-bodied, silvery white fish fry: roach, perch. On the lakes, Copper performed better, matching the color of rudd, crucian carp, and small perch. Brightly colored spinners are used in muddy water.
Numbering of the Meps Cyclops oscillators: No. 00; №0; No. 1; No. 2; No. 3.
Mepps Syclops spinners No. 00-0 are light baits designed primarily for catching chub and asp on rivers (or salmon, if caught on fast mountain rivers). No. 00 – 4cm – 5g; №0 – 5cm – 8g.
Mepps Syclops No. 1 spinners are a medium spinner, successfully used for catching small pike, medium and large perch. 6cm – 12g.
Mepps Syclops No. 2 spinners are a classic pike spinner, the most optimal, in my opinion, size of a pike spinner. There are also large perch. 7.5cm – 17g.
Spinner Mepps Syclops No. 3 is a large spinner designed for catching serious, trophy pike. 9cm – 26g.
Pike on "Cyclops"
Tactics for finding the most active fish. We cut off the little things. The pike is on the “French cyclops”, and the perch is on the spinner.
The morning turned out to be cloudy. Dawn found me pumping up the boat. It was barely dawn when my oars softly touched the surface of the water and I set sail. There was silence at the floods. A light breeze occasionally disturbed the surface of the water.
I swam in the direction of the river, stopping briefly and fishing for seemingly promising points. Fishing began in the usual jig way. Cloudy weather required the use of bright lures; they usually work well in low light. I used poisonous green twister, alternating it with milky white tioga. However, there were no bites along the way. As we approached the river, the wave intensified.
The first bite occurred under the boat. I had almost exhausted the bait when I suddenly felt a blow to my hand: a characteristic poke with shaking. Perch bite. But the sailor did not sit on the hook. I rethrow almost under the side to catch the fugitive. Again a bold poke, but an empty hook. The perch attacked while playing, I rinsed the twister several more times until I managed to hook the fish. The quite accomplished sailor caught the single hook with the very edge of his lip.
The perch stood not far from the boat and attacked quite actively. I decided to try fishing vertically on a spinner. I set up a Mepps unit with a yellow petal and started making short casts with short retrieves.
I finished the wiring with a vertical game. The spinner was also actively attacked by a predator. True, there were also very small perches and fairly decent humpback whales.
I set up a shaker to sift out the small stuff.
The bites have noticeably died down. Even active perches reacted weakly to the eight-gram cyclops. There was no longer any desire to install silicone. After biting and fishing for three-hundred-four-hundred-gram perches, I didn’t want to catch small things. I wanted to feel the bite of a trophy fish. I rafted parallel to the shoreline, alternately casting towards the shore and towards the riverbed. This tactic allowed us to find the most active fish. And it worked. I had barely started the next wiring when the cut happened. During wiring, the cord simply sagged, as if there was no spinner. I unwinded the cord and saw a bitten fluorocarbon leash. Pike or large pike perch have worked here. It's worth stopping at the point. I dropped anchor and hastily tied up the gear. Counting on the toothy one, he set up a metal leash, to which he fastened another cyclops with a large carabiner. Several casts and finally a characteristic attack. A sharp blow from a predator cannot be confused with anything. Aggressive fishing, which prevents the pike from shaking its head and getting rid of the spoon, periodic activation of the clutch and now it is already under the boat. As soon as I slowed down the speed of reeling out the cord and reached for the landing net, sensing the slack, the fish jumped out like a candle. I sharply lowered the tip of the rod into the water, without giving the line any slack. I don’t understand how I got the predator into the landing net, but after a few seconds it was all over. This bite made my day.
The spotted beauty turned out to weigh a little more than two kilograms.
Minimum weight of the predator this season. There were times when during the season it was possible to catch up to a dozen pikes, with an average weight of four to five kilograms. But every year, unfortunately, there are fewer and fewer trophies. In our area, now even two decent pike in a season can be considered lucky. NHNCH.

The complex profile of the spinner has ten facets of light reflection. Its movement very accurately imitates a living fish - an ideal potential prey for a predator. Game consistency is guaranteed at any reel speed. This characteristic feature makes it easier to quickly cover large areas of still water (pike, pike perch, perch), and provides convenient fishing in the current (salmon, brown trout, trout). The bait moves with alternating wave-forming movements, vibrations and lateral swaying, just like a real fish. Thanks to the double bending of the spoon, characteristic movements can be maintained at any speed. This characteristic allows you to quickly cover distances both in calm water and in fast currents.

In general, Mepps Syclops is a high-quality spinner (like any Mepps) and often catches pike averagely, BUT I give it 5 for sudden, inexplicable moments of increased pike attention to it. This is something my friends and I have been convinced of more than once on different bodies of water across the country.
The flight qualities of the Mepps Syclops spinner are average, the tee and rings are of high quality, does not require replacement, and has the ability, uncharacteristic of spinners, to deviate from obstacles while guiding through sparse horsetail. As a backup option, it’s a good idea for those who like to fish for more than just pike. There have been cases of increased interest on the part of the “white” predator and taimen.
In my experience, Mepps Syclops are the best lures for pike fishing. In various bodies of water and regions of our Motherland. Used in sizes 0 to 2. Color white and golden.

I caught the Mepps Syclops 12gr and 18gr spoons (if I’m not mistaken), I couldn’t catch the big one, but the smaller one is a “killer” for pike, if you compare it in terms of catchability only with DAM Effzet 22gr. But for me it has one big disadvantage: due to the small size of the spoon and tee, 100-150 gram bee-eaters swallow it right into the gills, and after that it is not possible to release them alive. In addition to catchability, it has another distinctive feature - casting range, for 12gr 5+
Mepps Syclops spoons are excellent for catching pike and perch, especially sizes 1 and 2.
I like to fish with spoons the most. Firstly: the spinner doesn’t pull too much, it’s easier to move, secondly: oscillating spoons are universal, can be used both in calm water and in any current, thirdly: in my opinion, the spinner imitates the movement of a fish in water much better, fourthly: flies many times further when casting.
If you think a little, you can find a few more advantages, but that’s not about that now. This spoon works great in both clear and cloudy water, as it is silvery and has a good shine, with red marks adding effect. I caught more than one pike, the size is certainly not a record, but still. The perch was also biting, I even caught a link.

Oscillating spoons from Mepps - the Syclops series - are my favorite baits for spring fishing for active predators.
Both pike and pike perch, and even more so perch, are very fond of this simple (in appearance), but very catchy spinner.
It is produced in different numbers (sizes) - therefore, when choosing, you need to consider what kind of fish you are going to catch.
Nos. 1-2 – all predatory fish are caught without exception. And in the middle of summer - if the “Cyclops” is carried out with a striking retrieve touching the bottom - a respectable bream or a well-fed rudd can very confidently bite on this spoon.
Large numbers Mepps Syclops - I use them specifically for catching pike and large pike perch.
This may seem strange, but I don’t put a steel leash in front of the Cyclops.
An extra detail in the equipment can scare away large pike perch. And, if Mepps Syclops is “grabbed” by a three-kilogram pike, it is unlikely to miss. This has been tested on a large number of fishing trips.
“Cyclops” work successfully in reservoirs with moderate or no current.
In a fast flow, they can fall into a tailspin. And begin to rotate chaotically around its axis. The fishing line (or cord) may become tangled. Moreover, it does not matter whether there is a swivel in front of this vibrator or not.
On reservoirs without a strong current, fishing with Mepps Syclops spoons is simply a pleasure.
I use two main movements of this spoon: - near the bottom, scraping along the bottom, raising a cloud of turbidity from the bottom when touched - pelagic in the water column - uniform, and uneven with short pulls with the tip of the spinning rod.
To fish with Mepps Syclops spinners, you need a fairly rigid spinning rod. Quick build.
A reel - any spinning reel - capable of working with such a weight of bait.
Cord or monofilament line – it’s up to you.
I also successfully fish with braided line.
And for a regular fishing line - with a diameter of 0.24-0.28 - depending on the weight of the oscillator used.
How to do Mepps Syclops
Mepps Syclops is a universal bait in terms of wiring technique. At the same time, the speed of feeding the bait can vary from the slowest to the fastest - the spinner will not lose its game and the result will be decent.
The following wiring methods apply to Mepps Syclops:
- uniform wiring is basic. “Cyclops” can be carried out in all layers of water (from the bottom to the very surface). The speed of the retrieve should be varied depending on the activity of the predator. In addition to catching active predatory fish, high-speed fishing is applicable for surveying vast water areas without visible promising places;
- Retrieving with pauses provides a characteristic spinner game that the predator likes. When paused, the vibrator lowers, spinning around its axis. In addition, when falling, it waddles from side to side very seductively;
- stepped wiring is ideal for fishing the bottom layer. After casting, the “cyclops” is allowed to sink to the bottom, the reel handle is made several turns and a pause is made so that the spoon falls to the bottom again. This sequence of actions is repeated over and over again. Syclops, compared to silicone baits, hangs on the fall longer, slowly descending and swaying enticingly. The sluggish predator especially likes this;
- wavy wiring is effective in limited areas in the middle layers. In combination with sharp jerks, you can increase fishing efficiency. Chaotic jerking movements imitate a wounded fish, tempting even the most passive predator to attack.
Each predator has its own speed of retrieve, at which the probability of a bite is maximum: for pike, a leisurely retrieve is preferable, for asp - high-speed, for perch - jerky.

That year I kept trying to master pike fishing. There was one pike and... that's it. A bunch of “empty” fishing trips. And now I decided to try again and bought a Meps Cyclops spinner. And here is the result. FOR 3 fishing trips 14 grass pikes All for Cyclops. Moreover, it only changed color in the evening and in muddy water - acidic. And ordinary white - 12 grams.
One minus of the Mepps Syclops spinner: the pike swallows it up to the very....., without a yawner it’s just a disaster, but not a single catch! My advice: if you see it in a store, take 2 pieces at once!
Reviews from anglers
On the Internet you can find many different reviews of Meps Cyclops, but positive ones clearly predominate among them. Many fishermen willingly use “Cyclops” when catching predators, considering them a first-class bait, and have been using them for fishing for many years. According to the majority, this spoon is effective in any weather and time of year. Mepps Syclops especially often saves fishing when the bite is sluggish and the predator is lazy.

I witnessed when, out of 7 fishermen who caught four of them between them, a man walking along the shore between other fishermen with a 12 gram orange Mepps Syclops spinner pulled out about 15-17 pieces from under the noses of the others! (half a bag and don’t squint at any, but 1-2.5 kg each). When moving to another place, he removed the spoon so that others would not see it. But in the evening, when he was getting ready to go home, my friend with whom I went fishing persuaded him to sell this spoon.
There was no live space on the Mepps Syclops lure! All the paint was scratched by pike teeth! About 40 minutes before dark, my friend, with a quick retrieve (the spinner was already spinning), pulled out 5! pike (albeit small ones). I was shocked! After that, of course, I bought one; I caught a similar bite on it only once, in the fall in windy and rainy weather, although my friend caught it in good weather, though not always.
Often a fake Mepps Syclops spinner can be distinguished even by its weight. All the fakes turned out to be much lighter than the originals. In some cases, you don’t even have to use scales - on the Cyclops I purchased, the “underweight” of four grams is tactilely felt.
There are two ways to apply designs to Mepps spinners. The first is the paint coating, and the second is the transparent sticker on Mepps Syclops spinners. Fake lures with a sticker are very easy to distinguish. If on the original spinner it was glued almost tightly, then on all copies they were torn off without much effort.
