Vast areas of the region are available for fishing. Almost all fishermen go home with a good catch. To do this, you need to choose the right gear, bait and groundbait, and also study the map of fishing spots well.

What kind of fish can you catch in Yaroslavl

Yaroslavl is known as a place where a lot of diverse ichthyofauna lives, mostly of rather large sizes. It is distinguished by species diversity, which is quite a difficult task to list in full. Therefore, below are examples of the most common ichthyofauna in Yaroslavl:

  • Pike;
  • Roach;
  • Catfish;
  • Guster;
  • Carp;
  • Asp;
  • Chub;
  • Bleak;
  • Bersh;
  • Bream;
  • Perch;
  • Zander.

To catch most of these species you will have to be patient, have good tackle and a variety of bait. It would be a good idea to study the map of fishing spots, then you are guaranteed not to return empty-handed.

Fishing on the Kotorosl River

To get from Moscow to the Kotorosl River, which flows in the Yaroslavl region, you will have to overcome no more or less than 200 km. The river itself originates near Rostov the Great, and practically in the very center of Yaroslavl it flows into the Great Russian River - the Volga. With the onset of spring, Volga fish go to the upper reaches of Kotorosl to spawn there. When the water level begins to decline, the fish “roll” into the Volga. True, not all fish go to the Volga. Some prefer to stay. And this part is quite significant and “noble” and consists mainly of ides, asps and chubs.

True, this fish mainly prefers to “settle” in the middle reaches, where there are the most favorable conditions for its life. More specifically, this is the place from the town of Govrilov-Yam to the Northern Railway. The forest and dense bushes come almost close to the river banks, which creates some inconvenience for fishing. But such dense thickets provide excellent protection from the heat and sun in the summer. As for the banks of Kotorosl, they are quite steep and often heavily overgrown with dense bushes, so fishing from the shore will be quite problematic. Therefore, it is best for fly fishermen to go 15-20 meters into the water, and this is almost the middle of the river. Moreover, casts must be made in the direction of the shore, trying to get under the sedge bushes.

It is best to fish in Kotorosl in the evening. It is at this time of day that the daytime breeze begins to slowly subside, so there will be no ripples on the water. Then, in the evening, midges begin to fly closer to the water, which means that soon chubs and ides will splash around in the place where they appear. This becomes especially noticeable in June, when the mass emergence of mayflies and other midges begins. Then, practically to the very surface of the water, almost all the fish begin to rise from the very bottom, among which you can see undergrowth and perches. As a rule, fishermen mostly catch ide and asp, but if you use a fishing method such as fly fishing, then sabrefish may also be added to these caught fish species. As for the roach, it tries to stay in schools and only in the area of pebble rifts.

If you use special polarized glasses in the evening, you can see roaches in small flocks, every now and then following the midges swarming above the surface of the water. And although the roach in this river cannot be called large, i.e. Its average weight is 100-200 grams, but catching it is still very interesting and exciting. Even sporty if you want! Experienced fishermen prefer to catch roach exclusively on the rifts, quietly approaching them from the shore and throwing bait upstream. Almost all the fish in the upper reaches of the river can be caught using dry flies, which look very much like mayflies.

In some cases, fish can be caught perfectly even with artificial flies. However, fish cannot be considered durra, because... she can easily recognize deception, which means that at the slightest bite you should try to hook it immediately. Yes, those times when fishermen actually caught big fish in this river, without exaggeration, even with homemade gear, are long gone. However, this does not mean that the fish in Kotorosl have completely disappeared. Of course not, because there is fish and there is still enough of it. This is especially noticeable in the evening due to strong splashes in the water. So as long as this is the case, you can count on a good catch.
