History of the reservoir

Lake Shchuchye is the name of the reserve on the Karelian Isthmus with the lake of the same name since January 18, 2011. What is this specially protected area?

The lake, according to experts, is at least 5000 years old. Until 1948, it was called Haiki Järvi, which means Pike Lake in Finnish. This is a rare case when, when an object is renamed, the meaning of the name is preserved. The lake has always been rich in fish - several centuries ago, lake delicacies were supplied to the table of the Swedish king. Back in 1951, living up to its name, it was home to golden and amber pike, trout and roach. Before the revolution, there was a small dam on the Shchuchye stream flowing out of the lake, which regulated the water level in the lake itself. The dam has survived to this day; there is a small but very picturesque waterfall near it. Under Soviet rule, the lake and the surrounding forests were included in the 1st category group, that is, the lake was supervised and maintained, and deforestation was strictly prohibited.

Measures to restore order

Now, in connection with its assignment to the status of a nature reserve, misunderstandings are arising around the Lake Shchuchye nature reserve. The fact is that not so long ago the reservoir was chosen by lovers of active recreation; a sufficient number of people came here from St. Petersburg on Saturday and Sunday. At the end of the last century, as a result of mismanagement, forests began to be cut down for cottage settlements, and to prevent the lake and the ancient forests surrounding it from completely dying, a decision was made to create a protected area.

Funds were allocated, barriers were erected, open fires were prohibited, and trash boxes were placed in especially popular places. These actions of the authorities caused an inadequate reaction among lake lovers. They tried to force their way into the territory of the Lake Shchuchye reserve, tore down barriers, and started fights with the guards. Strange behavior for residents of the cultural capital. The lake suffered in the post-perestroika years of mismanagement. But now plans have been developed to improve its health and put it in order. Much will be built, and recreation on Shchuchye Lake will be organized.

The relief of the territory shows traces of the last glaciation: more than a third of the reserve’s area is covered with kama (formed after the melting of the glacier) hills and basins with swamps and lakes, the largest of which are lakes Shchuchye and Druzhinnoye.

The area of the water surface of Lake Shchuchye is 53 hectares. Length - up to 1.1 km, width - about 0.6 km, depth - more than 5 m. The bottom of the lake is muddy. The shores of the lake are sandy or peaty. The southern, shallowest stretch is overgrown with reeds and becomes swampy. According to measurements taken in 2008, the average depth is 2-2.5 m, the maximum is 2.9 m near the peninsula in the east. The water, although shallow, is very clean. The sandy bottom and quickly warming waters of the lake attract a huge number of vacationers in summer.

Fishing in Borovoye on Lake Shchuchye (Kazakhstan)

The Burabay district in the Akmola region of the Republic of Kazakhstan is rich in lakes. This is a real paradise for fishing lovers. Some reservoirs even got their name due to the abundance of one or another type of lake life in them. A good example is Lake Shchuchye, which is part of the Kokchetav lakes group.

Until 1930, the Kilshakty River flowed into Shchuchye. But it was this year that the reservoirs lost contact with each other. Since then, the lake has gradually become shallower. However, not so fast that it runs out of fish. Currently, the maximum depth of the lake reaches, according to various estimates, from 18 to 23 m.

The Kokshetau Mountains approach Shchucheye from the north and west, and the lake itself is surrounded by coniferous forests. The banks of the reservoir are sandy in places and swampy in others. And, of course, in the surrounding area there are many recreation centers with camping grounds, sanatoriums, boarding houses, hotels and other recreational places where fishing enthusiasts who come for rich catch can stay. In addition, there are specially equipped places for fishermen on the shores of the lake.

Despite the fact that the lake is not fed from external sources, it is quite large: its length is about 7 km and its width reaches 3 km. The lake is incredibly clean. The transparency of the water in it ranges from 4 to 8 m. The water in Shchuchye is quite cold. In summer, its temperature, as a rule, does not rise above 24°C.

You can fish on Shchuchye not only in the spring and summer. This lake is also perfect for winter fishing. Usually the ice on Shchucheye appears around the end of November and lasts almost until the end of April.

Fishing in this area has been practiced since ancient times, at least since the mid-19th century. And now fans of fishing in Borovoye, and specifically on Lake Pike, will not be bored. Fish is bred here, so catching something decent is not difficult. In the waters of Shchuchye there are many different species of fish, in particular:

  • zander;
  • tench;
  • peled;
  • chebak (Siberian roach);
  • perch;
  • carp;
  • whitefish, ripus, vendace;
  • and, of course, pike.

Fish hunters will also be pleased with the size of the catch. Cases have been recorded of pike weighing about 15 kg being pulled out of the lake. As for perches, they sometimes reach 2-2.5 kg, and carp grow up to 5 kg. By the way, in Shchuchye there is not only fish, but also crayfish.

Fishing on Lake Shchuchye can be called conditionally free. The fact is that the lake is part of the State National Natural Park (SNNP) Burabay. Therefore, in order for fishing to go smoothly, it is necessary to purchase the appropriate permit. Rybnadzor carefully ensures that all those who like to sit with a fishing rod or leave a spinning rod in their hands have a license.

The permit doesn't cost that much. The cost changes from time to time, or rather once a year, because it is tied to the so-called monthly calculation index (MCI) and is approximately 10% of it. You can buy a license at the eco-post or in the village of Borovoe, in the forestry office (located opposite the building of the Museum of Nature).

As for specific places, experienced fishermen will find them anyway. For everyone else, we can advise you to go fishing for perches in the morning and choose places where there are submerged stones, snags or trees. Well, tenches are well caught in the reed thickets. You can return home with a good catch if you leave the spinning rod from the boat, moving 200-500 meters from the shore.

By the way, it is not necessary to take such equipment with you. Many recreation centers provide it for rent. All conditions have also been created for winter fishing on Pike Lake. Again, at the bases you can not only “get” everything you need for such a vacation, but even order a so-called “fisherman’s house”, which is heated by a gas burner, equipped with chairs and other amenities for a comfortable pastime.
