The best color of wobbler for catching pike

We will probably return to the topic about the color of the wobbler and its importance when fishing for pike for a long time. The belief in the existence of the best and catchiest bait color is too strong. This is especially true for beginner wobblers. I know from myself how highly the opinions of experts and experienced fishermen are valued. However, as you grow with your experience, you begin to understand that the color of the wobbler for pike is of mediocre importance.

Why did you come to this conclusion? To explain, you will have to “look” back several years, when I was just starting to master the wobbler. Consider the types of reservoirs in which I caught and still fish for pike. Seasons of the year, which means water temperature. And, of course, refer to the information that the fishing brothers give out from year to year on the colors of the wobbler and their catchability.

Where it all started

My friendship with wobblers began almost 20 years ago after watching Zaslavsky’s films. If anyone remembers, there was no talk about some kind of super catchy twitching. The author mainly drove the wobbler at “stop and go”. Of course, after watching the films, I was drawn to the unknown. A trip to the store culminated in the purchase of a No Name wobbler (pictured) and a Bubble Popper from River2Sea. By the way, both are still alive. The Chinese man now lives in a box from Megabass Van Ten. Retired, so to speak.

my green chinese

There was no thought at all about the color of the wobbler. I bought what caught my eye. I didn't make a mistake. The popper pleased with the bites of perches and small pike for a long time. On his first outing, the Chinese presented a pike worth 3 kg with “kopecks”.

Liked. I decided to buy more wobblers. The assortment in our store was poor, and even now it’s not very good. I went on the Internet. The price tag for branded pinocchios was not encouraging, so I ordered several cosadaki. Everything is in natural colors. I was wary of acid. I thought that if the wobbler looks like a fish, then its color should be closer to its natural color. In a word, I bought a wobbler for spruce trees, minnows and perches.

Fishing took place in shallow lakes, up to 3 meters deep. Everything was great. I drove the wobbler in a simple even motion with pauses. Pike and perch were caught regularly.

Several years have passed. The Boguchanskaya hydroelectric power station created a dam and we had to move to higher water. By this time, twitching had already become fully mastered. I would like to express special gratitude for this development to the Wobbler Lovers Club and the films of Lesha Shanin.

So. Naturally, by the time we reached the reservoir, the tiny wobblers were replaced by larger sizes. The bulk was already 100 - 120 sizes. But in color they were still the same minnows and perches. And again the fish was caught. True, I noticed that for ease of use among snags and great depths, the natural color of the wobbler is no longer enough. The models I liked the most began to be replaced with “acid”.

Has something changed in pike fishing due to the color change? No, I didn't notice much of a difference. The predator took the wobbler in new colors, but the bright color of the bait allowed her to feel more confident. By visually observing the progress of the wobbler, it was possible to bypass the support. When hooking, it became more convenient to detect the wobbler among snags.

When the pike refused to bite, I changed the wiring or the bait.

What color of wobbler do I use now?

what color wobbler is the best for pike

If you look at the photo of one of the working boxes, the main color of the wobbler is acid. In the wild there are wobblers that I haven’t managed to lose yet. Pike can be caught on them in the same way as on brightly colored ones.

The situation is the same with surfaces and subsurfaces.

By the way, in the first photo, the third one from the bottom right is a balisong 130. Last year it brought a large pike. Next came the duel crystal “redhead” and again a bite of pike under 7 kg. Did the color play a role? Of course not.

my biggest pike

Subsequently, the wobbler was donated to Neptune. To replace it, we bought balisongs in color 07 of brachiostick. I generally like wobblers in these colors. And, believe me, the pike too.

Why did you choose these colors? First of all, I like the color. It's nice to pick up beautiful toys))). Secondly, they are perfectly visible in the water. You can visually monitor the wiring from a distance. I am also sure that the pike reacts to a contrasting object in behavior.

Now it's time to move on to the main part.

How to choose the color of a wobbler?

Fate turned out to be such that I had to work part-time in a fishing store for about six months. I must say that I received a very useful experience. Firstly, I began to have an excellent understanding of all fishing gear, and secondly, I got the opportunity to collect some statistical data about fishermen, their preferences and problems. Believe it or not, people have the most questions regarding the choice of wobblers. And the most popular of them: “Which color is better?”

There are so-called eternal questions that always remain relevant for the simple reason that no one can give an exact answer to them. The question about the color of the wobbler is just one of them. There are so many anglers, so many opinions. I know people who believe that a wobbler should closely match the color scheme of the natural food item in terms of its color. And I have friends, 90% of whose arsenal is replete with poisonous green. They are convinced that acid is the most universal color that works always and everywhere. This is how an oil painting turns out. What’s most interesting is that both of them catch it...

I have wobblers in almost every possible color in my arsenal. I can’t say that I have any distinct individual preferences. As they say, I look at the situation. What are these situations like? First of all, the choice of wobbler color depends on the transparency of the water and lighting. In clear water, in sunny weather, I use exclusively those wobblers whose color is most similar to the live food object. The best in this regard are translucent wobblers. They best imitate a living fry, because, as you know, small fish become visible in the sun. On sunny days, in clear water, I have rarely been able to achieve good results using wobblers in any other colors. But in muddy water, and even in cloudy weather, it makes sense to use baits of bright, fancy colors. No matter what anyone says, even pike actively use vision as an organ of perception during hunting, so the visibility of the bait in the water is of great importance. In general, my experience confirms the basic principles of choosing colors depending on the level of light and transparency.

However, when choosing the color of a wobbler, you need to focus not only on weather conditions, but also on such a factor as how crowded the reservoir is. I have noticed that in areas where there are always a lot of anglers, acid colors are rarely shot, even in very poor visibility conditions. Mostly natural colors work, and the better they imitate the color of the fish’s food item, the better. The factor of predators becoming accustomed to baits exists, and this is a fact. And first of all, it stops responding to those wobblers that look and sound completely atypical, like for a live fish. And quiet “wobs” of natural colors are sometimes the only solution to getting bites.

Based on everything written above, I can give one piece of advice: catchy models should be present in the arsenal, both in natural and provocative colors. I have been guided by this principle for many years, and now my box is equipped in such a way that I feel confident on any body of water under any conditions. There were often episodes when I saw a predator go after a wobbler without a logical conclusion in the form of an attack. Replacing the bait with the same model, but in a different color, allows you to catch “capricious” fish.

The best color of wobbler for pike

I won't prove that I'm right. I’ll just express my personal opinion, gained over many years of fishing experience.

So.

I believe that the best color of a wobbler for catching pike is the one that the angler likes. The whole mass of colors is purely a trade feature. I repeat. I am sure that the pike reacts to a contrasting object in behavior . She doesn't care about the color of the wobbler.

Now exclamations are expected about the fact that there are a sea of examples when empty rinsing of one color when changing to another gave a bite. Tell me, did you install a wobbler that you were 100% sure of? Or were you just sorting through the baits in the box?

What am I getting at? Each of us has a wobbler that we are especially drawn to. Favorites, in a word. I have this DUO Realis Jerkbait 120. I’ve been fishing with it for a long time, I’m completely caught. And it doesn’t matter what color it is. There is complete confidence that here and now it will allow you to catch a pike. I can say the same words about Birking’s remark.

Take my word for it until you get a spiritual connection with the bait, set it more often, catch it - you will believe in the best color. What it means to catch a wobbler in my understanding is here.

Another point is when they talk about choosing the color of the wobbler according to the water temperature. I actually think this is a funny joke. I fished in the spring, when there was still ice on the shore, and in the heat in the summer. And the same colors worked.

Regarding the types of reservoirs. I already described a life example above.

Another point. Everyone knows that the famous “tiger” colors of wobblers are the very first to be dismantled. Moscanella experts also spoke about this at one time. Why is that? There is too much talk both among ordinary fishing enthusiasts and athletes about this color. An advertisement for life, so to speak. Now let's remember the statistics for the last year, 2021. Many flattering words began to be written about “carrots”. Did pike in all reservoirs really lose their taste for color at one point?

Wobbler color.

When buying a new wobbler, an angler always faces a new task: what color is the best wobbler? Disputes on this topic still arise today. Some argue that the color of the wobbler plays a huge role, while others, on the contrary, say that the color of the bait does not matter at all. In this article I will try to give some basic recommendations in choosing a color for a wobbler.

Each color has its own season.

And so, when choosing the color of a wobbler, there are several basic rules.
The first thing is to take into account the time of year, that is, for what main season the bait is purchased (spring summer autumn). Secondly, this is the immersion depth of the wobbler, you also need to take into account the transparency of the water, but this is more related to the use of bait in a specific place. Cold water.
Early spring. In my understanding, early spring is the time when water bodies opened up from ice before pike spawn. That is, the period when the pike is actively feeding and can be caught. At this time, the water, of course, is most often cloudy, since meltwater still enters the reservoirs, filling them. Wobblers of irritable colors will work best here (green, chartreuse, mat tiger)

Late fall.
During this time period, the water has already cooled completely and becomes cleaner and more transparent. Wobblers of natural, natural colors work best. Wobblers of natural colors with a purple tint also work very well. Do not forget the factor of water transparency, and if suddenly for some reason the water turns out to be cloudy, then, of course, you need to try brighter and more irritating colors. For muddy water, a good irritant is the belly of the wobbler, colored red. Warm water.
I consider the period of warm water to be late spring, all summer and early autumn. At this time, I personally do not have any special rules regarding the warm water period itself. Here I am guided only by water transparency, fishing conditions and depths. So all colors can work quite well. Personally, wobblers in green chartreuse and mat tiger colors work well for me at this time. It is also worth noting that in these warm months, on sunny days, it is better to use wobblers with a matte finish, as they do not give off the glare of the sun and do not scare away the fish.

To summarize all of the above, I would like to add that all these rules are not 100% instructions, but only help us quickly navigate and select the right wobbler. I will end here, and in the next article I will talk about the colors of wobblers that pike love most and give examples from personal experience. Bye.

Using wobblers while fishing

Summarizing

Maybe someday my opinion will change. Maybe. However, at this time I am sure that all the searches for a catchy color wobbler for catching pike for a specific body of water or weather are no more than our belief in the supernatural. Remember the period when the usual set of baits were silver and copper colors. To catch a pike at a given point, you need to comply with several points:

  • The pike must be in the selected area.
  • Know the capabilities of bait and be able to use them.
  • Believe in the bait.
  • Enjoy fishing.

And the best color of a wobbler for pike is set by the fisherman himself. If you put bait in a color that you don’t like, there will be no result. Just change after a couple or three casts without even pushing.

The best wobbler color for muddy water

There is a popular opinion that in muddy water it is simply necessary to use bright wobblers. This is especially true in the spring, for example, for catching pike during the post-spawning period. This premise is based on the fact that they are better visible in muddy water, the pike sees them better and from a greater distance. Accordingly, the number of bites will increase several times.

The best thing about this idea is that it coincides with the general belief that a bright wobbler improves the quality of the retrieve. After all, we can see it better, so in muddy water it is not only possible, but also necessary to use bright colors of a wobbler to catch pike. And how the predator perceives color in water is not important to us, because we can only guess about it. Yes, we don’t need this. The main thing is to catch fish with a spinning rod and do not forget to release it.
