Jig fishing

I'm just a real fishing fan. Besides the fact that I really enjoy just going fishing and enjoying the process of catching fish, I am also a fan of the fact that I can regularly develop in this area. I constantly test new types of lures, baits, tackle and other modern products. And today I’ll tell you about jigs, which many even experienced fishermen have not yet heard of.

A jig spoon is one of the types of oscillating spoons, which is usually used for vertical fishing. In fact, this is the most effective product that opens up the opportunity for a fisherman to catch a fish under any conditions.

To be honest, I became acquainted with it relatively recently, however, I have already tested it more than once in freshwater bodies. Lightweight models for sea fishing have even moved into the spinning boxes of most fishermen. The jig bait for asp is especially popular. In general, this is a basic bait that is now used in reservoirs for hunting pike perch and asp. Therefore, I will share with you the features of jig fishing, and also tell you about my personal experience of using this bait for hunting freshwater representatives.

Habitats and biting calendar

If the asp lives in northern rivers, then its life expectancy can reach ten years; to the south, the fish lives about half as long. The average length is a little more than half a meter and weighs about two kilograms, however, there are also larger specimens weighing up to 5-6 kilos and a length of about 80 cm.

Asp is a river fish. It is found in rivers belonging to the basins of the Caspian and Black Seas. This breed tends to avoid standing water whenever possible and stay with the current at all times. In addition, it is also found in the north - in the rivers of the Arctic Ocean basin.

The breed begins to be actively caught after spawning is completed. Of course, it can be caught before this time, for example, with live bait or a worm, but these will be rather isolated cases.

After spawning, the fish is often so weak that the fisherman can pull it out of the water with virtually no resistance. In the summer months, the asp tries to regain its strength by hunting fry in shallow water. In the autumn months, it goes deeper and is caught only with live bait or special devices.

Criteria for choosing gear

When choosing gear for asp fishing, you will have to take into account several very important points, the main one of which is the mass of the fish. In addition, she is quite smart, so she may not take traditional bait. Experienced fishermen recommend purchasing a lightweight spinning rod and a spinning reel.

If we talk in more detail about the choice of spinning rod , then its length directly depends on the fishing location. When fishing from the shore from reeds or bushes, it is better to take a rod of minimum length - a little more than two meters. When fishing from a boat or from coastal areas, where nothing interferes with good casting of bait, you can take a longer rod - about 2.5 meters.

During the fishing process, be sure to take into account some of the character traits of the asp. First of all, you should never rush to hook, otherwise there is a high probability of losing the gear.

When going after such fish, it is better to abandon standard braided fishing lines, as it can break the bait or bend the hook, because it attacks the bait very quickly. The coil simply will not have time to react to such a movement. A monofilament line with a diameter of 0.22 mm would be suitable here, which should be enough for a large asp.

Tips from experienced fishermen

The asp is constantly cautious, so it is unlikely that one will be able to rejoice at a good catch without knowing some of the characteristics and habits of the fish.

Experienced fishermen recommend:

  • choose places for fishing as far from the coast as possible and quiet ones without nearby beaches and large crowds of people;
  • pick up heavy spoons when fishing after spawning fish;
  • it is better if the terrain is dense (with tree trunks littered) and the water is covered with vegetation, which the asp likes;
  • the predator cannot be allowed to quickly detect the presence of a person , therefore, when delivering the bait to the parking lot, it is important to make casts with a range of at least 100 m;
  • when fishing from the shore, casting tackle should be as accurate as possible;
  • It is undesirable to use spinners with light weight , less than 30 grams;
  • the bait, regardless of the variety, must have excellent flight (aerodynamic) characteristics for casting range;
  • it is advisable to fish in calm weather in order to send the bait at a distance that allows you to remain unnoticed, as if in shelter;
  • when fishing with spoons, it is important first of all to identify the habitats of the asp , for example, where you can hear the beating of the tail on the surface of the water when searching for food;
  • asp loves bleak , so the best shape of the spoon is elongated, the color is silver, similar to the stunned bleak;
  • when splashes appear on the surface of the water, fishermen should not hesitate to cast the bait to the location of the fish, then carry out a uniform retrieve so that the asp does not come off the hook;
  • The success of a spinner on the water depends on the time of year , weather conditions, features of the reservoir and terrain.

It is impossible to give a definite answer: which spinner option for catching asp is the best. Each of the models described has its pros and cons. It is also important to use spinners under certain conditions and the correct wiring technique. Anglers who want to fish for asp should take into account the depth of the reservoir and choose wisely when choosing turntables and spinners.

The main thing is that the bites are constant even when catching asp in the most inappropriate and difficult weather conditions.

Fishing with jigs

The jigs used to catch asp look like a small piece of metal that has been given a certain shape. Among the variety of jigs, there are some of the most effective, with whose help you can catch a lot of fish.

Renegade Iron Minnow

This jig is not able to attract fish. In general, it is something between a jig and a spoon with a medium game. When using this attachment, fishing is done at a decent depth using a donkey in combination with a uniform or jerky retrieve.

Trehgranka Sabunaeva

Such a jig weighs quite a lot, however, its flight range is much higher compared to other designs. The effectiveness of the bait will be clearly visible at depth with stepped wiring. Closer to the surface, this nozzle sharply loses its effectiveness.

Trehgranka Sabunaeva

Kastmaster

This type of bait has a specific shape, which is why the current can throw it to the surface. Fishermen advise that when using a non-original nozzle, immediately replace the tees there and, in general, be as careful as possible when choosing the weight of the jig. In some cases, in the process of catching asp, the maximum effectiveness is obtained in the process of guiding for demolition.

How should you fish with a jig?

Many fishermen ask the question: “How to catch asp and pike perch with jigs?” In reality, everything is quite simple. In this case, there is no kind of game between the fish and the spinner. Due to this, the bait can be used even in a variety of situations, regardless of the fishing horizon, the strength of the current and other nuances that can generally affect the work of the spinner.

These types of “oscillators” are universal and absolutely any type of wiring can be used.

Depending on the type of predator, season, and behavior of the fish, a person must choose the optimal fishing technique to attract the attention of the fish and force it to attack. I basically like this bait. But at first it was quite difficult for me, as I had to get used to it and learn how to use it. I often went to Sazanya Bay and tested the bait.

I myself recently learned from more experienced, one might even say avid fishermen, that asp fishing with a jig is possible throughout the entire open water season. The asp actively reacts to bait, which in external characteristics is similar to a chub or bleak.

Perch also loves this bait, but for hunting it it is better to choose a jig weighing no more than 10 grams. Under no circumstances will pike miss this bait. I sometimes use jig fishing techniques with this bait, and catfish actively attack it. But in this case, it is better to use large, heavy bait in order to seduce the weighty, mustachioed inhabitant of the reservoir.

The jig is an excellent bait that simply must be present in the arsenal of every modern spinning angler. It is all-season and easy to use. This category of spinners is a real find for both beginners and more experienced fisherman.

Fishing with wobblers

Catching this breed is best done with wobblers, which come in two main types - small (their weight is less than 4 grams) and large (from 4 to 16 grams). Fishermen recommend selecting wobblers for asp weighing from 6 to 8 grams.

Lucky Craft Clutch

This is a universal medium-type wobbler. By using it you can catch fish of any weight.

Ever Green Wildhunch

This bait will allow the fisherman to catch an asp weighing more than a kilogram. However, these baits are not very effective and will require jerk fishing skills. It is recommended to use uniform and jerk wiring. The asp's mouth is quite large, so the size of the wobbler is selected to be approximately 8 cm. When fishing, use those baits that have the longest flight range.

Renegade Aspius Death

This type of wobbler has excellent flight characteristics and is also quite easy to maneuver. The fish will quickly notice it and will probably swallow this bait.

Spinner fishing

The spoon is much better compared to ordinary bait or the same wobbler. The fact is that the total number of fish caught can be increased several times if you alternately use different types of spinners. It is permissible to use the same bait several times at once. There are a lot of varieties of spinners, so this type of bait can be used at almost any time of the year.

Spoons

Due to the fact that the asp is an unpretentious fish for bait, there is no need to use any special fishing technique. However, there are still several important features when using spinners - the required range, the accuracy of hitting the bait in a predetermined area, the dexterity of all maneuvers.

Fishing with a spoon has one important drawback - in the process of bottom fishing, certain problems may arise, especially in strong currents.

Experienced fishermen use lures almost immediately after spawning, doing this both from the shore and from a boat.

Turntables

Such spoons are used in strong currents. According to anglers, the spinner is several times better than jigs, which are superior only in casting range. For fishing from the shore on a riffle located parallel to the coastline, use a spinner weighing 10 grams with a petal painted white, which will be ideal for fishing in the morning, evening, and also in cloudy weather.

In sunny weather, a yellow or red petal is more suitable - it will give less glare , which can scare away the fish. The edge of the spinner must be put on the tee. It will become an additional irritant for the fish, and will also stabilize the movement of the bait.

Oscillators

By using an oscillating spinner, you can cast as far as possible with an excellent hit. Fishermen advise using spinners with a long blade and a weighted core. They behave perfectly both in the air and in the water.

Many people use oscillating spoons for pike when fishing for asp, however, in all respects they are inferior to spoons designed specifically for this type of fish.

The best types of spinners for asp

There are a huge number of different types of spinners used, including for asp fishing. Some fishermen prefer to fish with a wobbler or Devonian, others argue that the best fishing for this difficult representative of the Karpov family can only be with a mamba or a bullet. Below we will talk about the most popular baits, which are distinguished, first of all, by their versatility.

Did you know? The world record for throwing tackle is the throw of the German Walter Kimmerow in 1984. He was able to throw a tackle weighing 30 g at 176 m.

Hesitating

The first artificial bait to be used on predatory fish. The tackle looks like a curved metal figure, shaped like a small fish. With a certain retrieve, the spoon makes characteristic movements that imitate the movement of fish in the water and begins to oscillate, which is what gave the tackle its name. There are a huge number of different forms - from the simplest, made by pouring molten metal into a tablespoon, to complex mechanisms with sound imitation.

Oscillating spoon
Perhaps this type of spinner is the leader among similar gear for catching predators. Suitable for use throughout the year.

Among the advantages of the spoon, the following should be highlighted : the use of this gear does not require the fisherman to have great skill in performing wiring, i.e. even a beginner can fish with a spoon, although it is also popular among experienced fishermen.

This gear has been well known for a long time, and brands such as “Mepps Syclops”, “Kuusamo Rasanen” and “Kuusamo Professor”, etc., are always popular among anglers, regularly proving their effectiveness.

Oscillators, depending on size, are divided into the following types:

  • micro - the smallest: up to 5 cm long;
  • medium-sized - their length is 5–10 cm;
  • large - over 10 cm.

The first two sizes of gear are used for asp fishing.

Rotating

The most popular tackle designed for catching predatory fish. It differs in the shape of the petal and its color, among the most popular are “Aglia”, “Long”, “Comet”. But the main difference lies in the angle of inclination of the petal - the stronger the current, the narrower the shape of the petal and the smaller the inclination angle.

This is explained by the fact that guiding a wide tackle with a large angle of inclination will be quite difficult. These are excellent tackles for fishing in calm waters. The color of the spinner is selected depending on how cloudy the water is. In reservoirs with poor visibility, bright tackle is used, in clear rivers - darker ones.

Spinners

Several types of rotators are known:

  • with rear loading;
  • with front loading;
  • spinnerbaits;
  • buzzbaits.

They fish with a spinner mainly using a leisurely monotonous retrieve, with sharp jerks of the bait.

Castmasters

They are a type of vibrator; they are a specially shaped figure made of a special material with a clearly calculated center of gravity. The shape is most similar to a fragment of a metal rod with an oval profile, cut diagonally. In the classic version, the cutting angle of the castmaster is 17 and 23°; a winding ring with a triple hook is attached to the spoon. It is distinguished by its versatility and good play with any wiring.

Castmaster spinner
This tackle is effective with any type of retrieve: fast, uniform at the surface, at medium depths with wave-like animation, in bottom fishing with jerky movements.

Jigs

A type of spoon that is used for vertical fishing. This tackle was conceived as a bait for fishing in the sea, at great depths. It is an excellent device for bottom fishing in a wide variety of circumstances.

Soon the tackle for sea fishing was appreciated by freshwater spinners. They found that light jigs were very effective for catching predators in rivers and lakes. The tackle has gained particular popularity among asp fishing enthusiasts. Many consider it the main gear when fishing for this fish.

Important! For fishing in freshwater bodies, it is advisable to use jigs weighing 15–40 g and up to 8 cm long, although minor deviations from the specified range are acceptable. For sea fishing, use a spoon weighing up to 1 kg.

The classic jig is a spoon of a traditional elongated shape, with an approximate length/width ratio of 6:1. The cross-section of the bait can be very diverse: hexagon, circle, quadrangle, but they all have a decent mass. Quite a noticeable weight allows for good casting and quick penetration, as well as retention in the fishing area during currents of any intensity.

Spoon jigs
There is a wide range of jigs on the market.

But since high-quality tackle is not cheap, very often they are made independently, for a specific fish in a specific body of water. It should be said that such gear is often not inferior to branded ones. In general, the concept of “jig” has become a common name for a narrow, massive jig.

All of them can be divided into the following types:

  • narrow-bodied with a slight tail curve - used most often at sea: for halibut, flounder, cod;
  • a blank with a massive top - shows all its advantages during step-by-step retrieving, and is used most often when fishing for pike perch;
  • a spinner similar in shape to a castmaster (the famous Acme product is a type of jig) - it is most often used when fishing for asp.

Fishing technique and tactics

On the splash

You should throw a spoon or wobbler exactly where the school of fry or bleak is. They are what the asp usually hunts. Often you can even hear the bleak jumping out of the water, the main thing here is to make an accurate cast exactly in the splash area. The probability of catching an asp will be quite high in this case. However, it is better to cast the spoon a little further than the area where the fish showed themselves at the surface.

In this case, it is better for the fisherman to dress discreetly and sit down. The fact is that the asp is a very shy fish, and even a spinner flying in the air can scare it and force it to go deeper.

Waiting

Such tactics are subject only to true fishing masters who are able to perfectly sense where the fish are located. This fishing method involves throwing a spoon and passing it over the same area a large number of times.

To do this, there must be absolute confidence that the asp is walking somewhere in that area. Only in this case can you hope for the likelihood of a bite.

Uniform wiring

Uniform wiring is used both when throwing a spinner and a wobbler. This method of baiting is one of the key ones, however, it is not used too often. Asp is a fish of mood, so it can go well with both torn and even retrieves. Fishermen often alternate casts - one of them is performed evenly, the other is jerky.

It was noticed that much more often an asp can bite on a bait that moves as evenly as possible. This method must also have some accompanying circumstances - a fairly strong flow of water, as well as its high temperature. It turns out that the ideal time to use this method of asp fishing is mid-summer.

Many fishermen have begun to use pheromone-based baits, however, this does not always work with asps, since they are able to quickly move away from the area where the bait has arrived and simply not feel it.
