The salmon bite is best in the early morning or before a thunderstorm or rain. This increases the number of insects that are pressed against the water itself by atmospheric pressure. It is during this period that salmon begin to actively feed, not missing various baits and lures.
Where to fish
For fishing to be effective, you need to know some features of salmon hunting with a spinning rod:
- This fish practically does not approach the shore, and, therefore, it needs to be looked for further from the shore.
- Salmon is a cautious and timid fish, and requires careful actions that do not cause much noise. When fishing, it is advisable to wear clothes that match the color of the environment.
- When biting, he takes any bait.
- A long but accurate throw is required. If the fish is caught in one place at least once, then you should make precise casts to the same place and the result will not be long in coming.

When fishing on small rivers, where you can “wad” fishing, you don’t need a long rod; 1.5-2 meters long is enough.

The choice of fishing line or cord is also a crucial moment in organizing successful fishing. It should be borne in mind here that salmon fish are fast and strong, and therefore, it will be a great pity if the fishing line does not withstand its pressure. When fishing for trout, you can take a monofilament line with a diameter of 0.2 mm or a braided line with a diameter of 0.15 mm.
Preference can be given to “braid” because of its low specific stretch. This allows you to instantly transfer the moment of bite to the rod. To catch salmon, you will need a more powerful fishing line, and possibly a more powerful rod with an inertia-free (or inertial) reel. To catch big fish, fishermen are increasingly using baitcasting (sea) reels. They are more reliable and designed specifically for fishing for large fish. The fishing line is usually braided, at least 0.25mm. Fishing for salmon requires a lot of skill and patience. If handled ineptly, this fish is capable of breaking or tearing any tackle. This fish fights for life to the last, and therefore you need to be prepared for a desperate fight.

From the last days of May to the last days of June, as well as in August, September and October, it is recommended to fish for salmon with a spinning rod. When fishing for salmon, the equipment of the spoon, or more precisely the attachment of the hook to the spoon, plays an important role. So, too rigid an attachment interferes with fishing. Salmon is best caught using a combination of a spoon with a treble hook attached to a wire so that when the fish is hooked, it deviates from a straight line. Since adult individuals of this species can be very massive and actively resist being caught, it is necessary to ensure high strength of the gear. It is safer to catch this fish in a deep river with a fast current, and in places where the riverbed is littered with stones. The salmon, located next to the stone, immediately rushes to the spoon that appears in its field of vision. It is recommended to cast fishing rods multiple times, while deviating in different directions from the previous ones. It is better to cast your fishing rods far from the shore, since salmon rarely live and linger near the shore. We spent the night in a village on the banks of a mountain river . We have to go out to the river for red fish . It is clear that all this is illegal, but being in Primorye and not catching red fish is not right. In addition, this fish refuses spinners and other baits when it rises into the river from the sea to spawn. So, let’s ignore the law and other conventions and do a little poaching - a chum salmon full of red caviar !

I decided that I would not be of much use in catching red fish . Because I’m no poacher, and certainly not in my native and familiar places, and even more so. So, professionals, locals, my guides and their comrades got down to business. And I went to try my luck on a mountain river with a spinning rod.
Sailing on rubber boats along such a fast mountain river is not an easy task. But my comrades decided to catch some red fish and this will not stop them!
And here they are. They were brought a few hours earlier, upstream, and they rafted, trying to catch chum salmon, a red fish of the salmon family, in a net stretched between boats, which rises into this mountain river in mid-October to spawn.

In general, catching red fish going to spawn in the rivers of Primorye is possible only with licenses. It’s clear that we didn’t have any licenses... But this is how I look at it: people live in difficult conditions, in such wilderness and everyday disorder; living next to a river and taiga and not taking the gifts of nature for food is simply blasphemy! State? Fuck you, state! They left people alone with their problems. No rights - just responsibilities. So, from a purely human point of view, I think that taking and going to catch a few red fish with poaching gear , purely for yourself, is the right thing to do!
It’s bad when grabbers come and catch red fish with grappling hooks, injuring many of them, or use nets to completely block the exits from rivers to the sea. Then, having collected the fish by the hundredweight, they select the caviar, and throw the carcasses on the shore to rot... This is poaching!
We salted the fish. And the red caviar was lightly salted - for five minutes.
They removed the bags containing the caviar, poured boiling water over the caviar and swirled it with a stick. Then they added salt and let it sit for 5 minutes. All! You can use it! Cool, tasty, nutritious protein in its purest form! There can be no fresher caviar. After all, we saw the chum salmon from which the caviar was taken, still alive.
This is how people live in remote villages, on the edge of the earth, to say the least... There are no living conditions, houses on the hills, no running water, no gas either. The nearest large settlement is more than 100 km away. But nearby is the taiga, where there is game, lemongrass, ginseng, eleutherococcus, mushrooms, berries, pine cones; There is fish with red caviar in the river... That is. there are those riches and delicacies for which some residents of the European part are ready to lay down their souls; but there are no basic conditions!
This is the imbalance that occurs. It's a pity! People are good.

More and more, salmon fishing is taking on the character of extreme fishing and is taking on mass but organized forms. Catching such a fish and feeling its power when fishing is the ultimate dream of every amateur and sports angler. Such fishing has become available not only to local fishermen, but also to fishermen from other, more remote regions, where there are no traces of salmon. Given such a huge demand, some local businessmen improve water bodies and grow trout in them to organize mass fishing trips for anglers in order to catch trout. But people are more attracted to extreme sports, and they are happy to go to wild rivers with wild nature. This is a unique type of active recreation, when in search of trout, salmon or salmon you need to walk tens of kilometers, making your way through dense thickets, while fighting off attacking insects.
The real extreme and a huge surge of adrenaline will come at the moment when the spinning rod, almost breaking into two parts, bends under the weight of a large fish and you will need to put together patience, strength and dexterity. The pleasure will be complete if, along with cries of joy, a specimen of salmon weighing about 10-15 kilograms appears on the shore. Description and characteristics
Despite the fact that salmon and trout are similar in appearance, they differ in the size of their scales, growth rate and dimensions. The maximum size of Atlantic salmon is 1.5 m and weighs more than 40 kg. The same brown trout, or ishkhan, does not grow larger than 15-20 kg even in suitable conditions.
