In the Solnechnogorsk region, north of the city of Solnechnogorsk, there is the cleanest and largest lake in the Moscow region, Senezh. The photos of this reservoir that are in this article cannot fully convey all its charm. Every summer thousands of vacationers come here in search of peace. They say that Lake Senezhskoye is rich in fish and is a favorite place for fishermen. They can be seen here at any time of the year, even when the reservoir is covered with a thick layer of ice.
Description and location
Senezhskoye Lake is an artificially created reservoir. It is located approximately 60 kilometers from Moscow, on the outskirts of the city of Solnechnogorsk. The length of the coastline is 16 kilometers, and the area is approximately nine hectares (maximum width is three kilometers, and length is about 5 km). The greatest depth of the lake is 6 meters, and the average is about three meters. The reservoir has an irregular shape, since numerous bays form uneven shorelines. In the bay, which is formed at the site of the mouth of the Sestra River, there are small islands (with an area of 2 hectares). At sunset they turn a bright crimson color. Because of this, they were called so - Raspberry.
The bottom of the lake is muddy, and a lot of algae grows near the shores. The Sestra River originates from Senezh. There are many settlements on the lake: towns, villages, villages, etc. Here are the names of some of them: Talaevo, Osipovo, Reino, Timonovo, Vertilino, Zagorye, Gigirevo, Senezh, Bogorodskoye, etc.

It is located quite close to Moscow, about fifty kilometers from the Ring Road along the Leningradskoe Highway. Convenient access allows you to get by car almost to the water. The lake is quite clear even in mid-summer. During the period of blooming water, visibility is 2-3 meters. Lake Senezhskoye itself is a reservoir of largely artificial origin, and its emergence is inextricably linked with the centuries-old history of the creation of a waterway from the Baltic and White Sea along the Volga, through Moscow, to the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea.
Currently, the area of Lake Senezh is about 7 sq. km. The greatest length is 5 km, and the greatest width is 3.5 km. The length of the coastline is 16 km. The average depth of the lake is 2.5-3 meters, but there are depths of up to 6 meters. This is in the area of the dam and the former lake Gushchino. The lake is fed by atmospheric precipitation, as well as the Sestra and Mazikha rivers flowing into it and 4-5 other nameless streams. Excess water flows through a specially equipped spillway, forming the further flow of the Sestra River.
In the southwest, Mazikha Bay was formed, or, as the old-timers call it, old Senezh. The second bay is on the eastern shore. This is the flooded part of Sister Valley. There are two islands here, which locals call Raspberry. The third wide bay is on the western shore. There is a city recreation area here: a park, a beach, a boat station.
The most common vegetation on the lake are reeds, reeds and sedges. There is also such a miracle of nature as floating islands, or floodplains, which are not connected to the bottom and wander around the lake depending on the wind. True, now they are almost all already attached to the shore.
General recommendations for lovers of spearfishing in Senezh can be summarized as follows.
Firstly, you can get to Solnechnogorsk and, having come to the boat station, rent a boat and, having bought a fishing permit here, go to any point of the lake. It is necessary, of course, to keep in mind the dimensions of the lake noted above. But if the weather is warm and sunny, then you will enjoy even the tedious procedure of rowing to get to your favorite place. It is still recommended to limit yourself to the northern and northeastern parts of the reservoir in the area of the Raspberry Islands and the adjacent coast. There are good places for underwater hunting and, even with little skill in this matter, you will not be left without prey.
Secondly, for those who have their own vehicles, we can recommend turning right within Solnechnogorsk from the Leningradskoye Highway towards the village. Timonovo. Here the road runs along the very shore of the lake and, although in many places parking is prohibited, you can still find a haven for your “swallow”, even not very far from the water. Then you can either swim with a gun nearby along the shore, or swim 1-1.5 km to the north-eastern shore, where the places are not so busy and therefore more attractive. In this case, you can, of course, use an inflatable boat if you have one.
Senezhskoye Lake - a source of inspiration
Since ancient times, the surroundings of this beautiful reservoir have been favored by creative people. The riot of colors and beautiful landscape attracted poets and writers, artists and musicians here. At the end of the nineteenth century, the great Russian painter I. Levitan came to the village of Bogorodskoye in search of inspiration. He was so struck by the beauty of these places that he decided to temporarily settle in the village and painted his painting “Lake. Rus'", which later became one of his best works. Ten kilometers from Lake Senezhskoe was the estate of the literary genius Alexander Blok. The poet often took walks to the pond. Its stunning appearance at different times of the day put Blok in a creative mood. Full of creative ideas, he returned home and took up his pen.

Rest on Lake Senezh
The reservoir is a popular vacation spot for all people from the Moscow region, Moscow, and CIS countries. There are many houses and recreation centers around the lake, private cottages that can be rented for living, and beaches. Story
Until the beginning of the 19th century, there was no trace of Lake Senezh. In its place was the small lake Gushchino. However, when an almost 9-kilometer canal was dug between the Sestra and Istra rivers, more than 30 locks were erected (13 on Istra, more than 20 on Sestra), dams and bridges were built, then in the upper reaches of the Sestra River, absorbing Lake Gushchinino, as a result of an increase volume of water, a new artificial reservoir was formed - Lake Senezhskoe. Two rivers feed from it: Sestra and Mazikha.
How can I get to
It is more convenient to get to Lake Senezhskoye from Moscow by car, but you can also use public transport.
By car: we drive along the Leningradskoye Highway to Solnechnogorsk, 65 kilometers, then turn right and reach the village of Timonovo.
When you decide to use public transport: take the train from Leningradsky Station and get to Podsolnechnaya station. Then we transfer to bus number 25 or a minibus to the “House of Artist” stop, then walk.
Lake Senezh. Fishing for the patient
This artificial reservoir contains fish of quite large sizes. Here you can find a wide variety of aquatic inhabitants: pike perch, perch, crucian carp, pike, carp, roach, bream and even the king ruff, so named because of its large size. The best time for fishing is windy weather, especially when it blows from the south. However, after the north and west winds, abundant fishing begins in the central part of the reservoir and up to the Raspberry Islands. In autumn, in sunny weather, you can hunt for the lake predator – pike. The end of pike fishing comes with the first formation of ice. This period lasts until the ice crust completely disappears. But in winter you can catch perches, ruffs, pike perch, etc. With the onset of spring, bream and ruffs become especially active. Local residents say that fishing for these fish is especially successful during the full moon. In addition, according to old-timers, in these places it is best to fish from the middle of the lake, sitting in a boat. Coastal fishing is possible only at night or in the spring.
Fishing base on Senezh
Since fishing on Lake Senezhskoye is very popular both among residents of nearby settlements and among visitors from Moscow and other cities, a base has been created on the island, which belongs to the Society of Fishermen.
On the territory of the base there is a guest house with an excellent kitchen. At the request of fishermen, they are provided with a separate refrigerator for storing their catch or a stove if they wish to prepare a dish from their catch themselves. Many vacationers come here in their own cars, but there is a train from Moscow to Solnechnogorsk that will take amateur fishermen to the shores of Lake Senezh in an hour and a half.

Lake Senezh is 5 km long and 3.5 km wide. The northern bank is made up of an artificial dam 1.5 km long. In the west and east the lake has elevated shores, and in the south it is low and swampy. Its bottom is muddy, and in the area of the dam it is sandy. The average depth is 2.5-3 m, and the maximum is 6 m. Senezh water has long been famous for its purity and transparency.
Senezh is not a natural reservoir, but one of the oldest reservoirs near Moscow, which was formed in 1826, when they began to build a canal connecting the Istra and Sestra rivers. A new waterway became necessary in order to quickly and cheaply deliver stone from the Volga to Moscow, from which the builders subsequently erected the Cathedral of Christ the Savior. Many people worked on the canal; it took almost a quarter of a century to build, building three stone locks, a dam and 8.5 km of earthen channel. However, the artificial canal could not withstand the competition with the built railway and eventually ended up abandoned.

Interestingly, at the end of the 19th century, the first hydroelectric power station near Moscow appeared on the dam of Lake Senezh. It was built at the expense of Baron Knopp and had a power of 50 kW. In the middle of the last century, in order to allow tanks to move past the reservoir to the training ground, the old hydraulic structures were concreted and the dam was filled up.
The name of the reservoir comes from the name of a small lake of glacial origin, which today is a bay in its southern part and is called Old Senezh. Today, on the shore of the lake stands the city of Solnechnogorsk, as well as smaller settlements. The Sestra River flows out of the reservoir, and several streams flow into it from the southern side.
Fishing on Lake Senezh
Senezh is considered a paradise for fishing lovers. At any time of the year you can meet fishermen here who catch bream, roach, pike, carp, perch, tench, ruffe, silver and golden crucian carp, eel, gobies and pike perch. The most popular fishing methods are float rods, spinning rods, mugs, girders and bottom tackle (feeder). There are several fishing bases on the lake.
Since 1964, the Senezh fish farm has existed on the lake. Nowadays, this enterprise offers excellent paid fishing to everyone. In addition to carp, roach, perch, pike, carp and silver carp, you can catch trout and grass carp here. The weight of individual fish reaches 10 kg.
Holidays on Lake Senezhskoye
On weekends, many come to the expanses of Lake Senezh to windsurf and kitesurf. In mid-summer, beach lovers relax here. There are boat stations and a cafe on the shore, as well as sports grounds for playing volleyball and basketball. Sandy beaches are paid for and are equipped with umbrellas and sun loungers.

How to get there
From Moscow you can get to Lake Senezh by car. First, you need to drive along the Leningradskoye Highway (E105 highway) to Solnechnogorsk, and once in the city itself turn right to Timonovo.
Those who travel on their own take a commuter train to the Podsolnechnaya station. There are direct trains from Leningradsky Station in the capital to Podsolnechnaya. Electric trains traveling from Moscow to Tver, Klin and Konakovo State District Power Plant also stop here. Travel time – 1.10-1.15. In Solnechnogorsk, you need to change to bus or minibus No. 25 going to Timonovo and go to the “House of Artist” or “House of Fisherman” stops.
