Ice fishing for trout on a platform

Fishing for trout on a platform is in great demand among modern fishermen. After all, few people are interested in ordinary small fish; everyone wants to catch strong fish, which is also distinguished by gastronomic delights. This article will focus on spinning fishing.

Many fishermen have a lot of questions about paid rainbow trout fishing if they have not previously had similar experience.

Trout began to gain popularity among domestic fishermen relatively recently. This is due to the fact that the habits of this fish differ from other representatives, and in order to catch it, the fisherman not only must select suitable gear, lures and bait, but also must have a high level of skill. Trout, like any other type of predatory fish, behaves very carefully and prefers to wait for its prey in shelter, so in order to catch it you should think through fishing tactics at all stages. Most experienced anglers prefer to use a spinning rod to catch trout, and the bait is a special trout spoon, the correct choice of which determines the success of the entire fishing trip. In addition to choosing the appropriate gear, you should also take into account the characteristics of the reservoir and seasonal factors.

What gear should I use?

Lightweight spinning rods are great for rainbow trout. The spinning test should be approximately equal to 9 g. A light model is recommended for catching this fish.

Trout in hand
A thin cord, which has a thickness of 0.2, perfectly allows you to bring decent fish to the shore. Even ultralight, the test of which is 3 grams, may be suitable for this. But such equipment does not allow you to get fish out of the water, but only allows you to bring it to the shore. Therefore, you need to use a light spinning rod with a test rating of 9. Paid trout fishing allows you to catch fish whose weight is approximately 4 kilograms. Of course, you can catch larger fish weighing up to 6 kg.

Choosing a spinning rod for fishing on a platform

The durability of a spinning rod is very important for rainbow trout fishing. Of course, ultralight allows you to catch small fish, but generally trout in paid places have a decent weight. Therefore, it is very important that your spinning rod can withstand such prey.

Casting distance does not play as big a role as it might initially seem. And trout don’t particularly bite on small baits; trout fishing has special requirements for fishing rods and other equipment. You should have a stronger fishing rod that is designed specifically for trout or large fish, as well as an appropriate set of baits that are specific to this fish. Also make sure that you have a good supply of a variety of baits, including edible ones. It is better to prepare for fishing in advance by putting edible rubber on your hooks right away. This will allow you not to be distracted once again by the preparatory moment in the process of fishing and not waste time on it. If your spinning rod or lures do not allow you to work with large fish, but you still come fishing and want to focus on the catch so as not to leave empty-handed, then try catching smaller fish, weighing from half to two kilograms.

If, on the contrary, you have already caught several fish weighing 1 kg, then you should try to get larger prey, the weight category of which can safely reach up to eight kilograms. For every fisherman, catching a big fish is a source of pride. After all, everyone wants to boast that they caught a rainbow trout weighing 8 kg.

Fishing for trout with silicone

Photo: Andrey Yanshevsky. At first, small chub wobblers were more often used to catch trout.

Silicone was used relatively rarely at first.

The situation in favor of rubber baits changed dramatically after products created specifically for trout fishing began to arrive in stores.

It should be noted that most anglers clearly prefer to use a specific type of bait - a wobbler, rubber or spinner. Preferences are probably related to successful previous fishing experience.

Since trout are tempted by all types of baits, it means there is no universal one. A lot depends not even on the type of bait, but on how the fisherman presents it to the fish. And here there is a huge field for creativity.

Schematically, trout can be active while being at the bottom, near the surface of the water and in the middle layers. Accordingly, all baits are divided into surface and deep.

For me, with my exclusively amateur trout fishing experience, it is technically easier to use wobblers when the fish is active or, conversely, extremely passive. In the latter case, trout can pinch silicone baits by the sides and tail during a very slow fall retrieve, but aggressively attack the wobbler with active play at the bottom or in the middle layers.

It is very convenient to fish with spoons, primarily because it is easy to accurately cast and guide along the desired horizon.

It’s interesting with silicone baits, but, for example, for me, it’s a little unusual to do very slow retrieves and smooth animations. This is a little strange even for me, since I use all these types of wiring on every fishing trip if I fish with a float rig.

It is not unimportant that for effective fishing with soft baits you need tackle that is not only more sensitive, but also of higher quality. Otherwise, careful bites will simply not be visible. It will be impossible to stop or speed up the bait in time and make a timely hook.

In addition to certain requirements for a spinning rod, the quality of the reel, fishing line and all equipment elements is no less important.

You need to have at least two spinning rods. I roughly divide them into a rod for fish weighing up to 2 kg and a second rod for larger fish.

Almost every time I experiment with fishing lines in one way or another. In general, I don’t see any universal option.

Braided cords are good not only for their combination of thickness and strength, but also for their rigidity. The bite is instantly transmitted to the rod. But this same rigidity can play a disservice during fishing. If the reel clutch operates with a delay, then the fish breaking off or falling off the hook is very likely.

If the reel and spinning rod are of good quality, then fishing with a thin line is very pleasant. It is important not to purchase cords with a clearly low price. Their characteristics clearly do not match what is written on the label. And the service life leaves much to be desired.

The thinner the cord, the higher its quality should be, otherwise the braid may “die” on the first fishing trip. Inexpensive braid can be successfully used only in tackle for sbirulino, if the bombard’s own weight is not less than 12-15 g.

Monoline, especially sinking line, is good because it allows you to make a longer cast. The difference in range on braid and monofilament may be only a couple of meters, but this can be important. Monoline does not get tangled when casting light baits, as happens with braided cord. And if it gets tangled, it unravels easily.

There is a separate question about fluorocarbon fishing lines. First, you need to make sure that what you are offered is truly fluorocarbon, which does not burn in the flame of a lighter.

Since this fiber is not as strong as polyamide monofilament, you need to be very careful when choosing fluorocarbon line in diameter based on strength.

There is little point in using fluorocarbon as your main line. Practice shows that it is better to make leashes out of it. Which leash length is best depends on the angler's fishing technique. As a rule, the length is in the range of 20-50 cm.

You need to understand that the main advantage of fluorocarbon fishing line is not its supposed “invisibility” in water, but its resistance to scuffing, rigidity and high density.

I suspect that fluorocarbon is only needed by athletes, and also for the peace of mind of the amateur angler. When there is no bite, there is no more reason to look for errors in the design of the equipment.

It seems to me that it is much more important to shift all attention to the animation of that other soft silicone bait. The capabilities of the bait depend both on its own design and on the weighted hook and angler’s technique.

There are a lot of baits and they differ mainly not in size and color, but in the spectrum of vibrations that they can give in the water.

From practical observations, it has been noticed that trout are rarely interested in smooth “slugs”. Volumetric products with legs, claws, very flexible tails and deep corrugation of the body work better.

In some cases, one and a half inch vibrotails are consistently caught, but not all.

In order to be able to give action to the bait at the lowest possible speeds, it is extremely important to select a hook and design the entire equipment with the bait.

In most cases, fishermen use special jig heads weighing up to 1-3 g and single hooks loaded with pellets.

When you start testing a new bait, sometimes you have to change its location on the hook or head several times.

Moreover, you often have to change the hook to another of a different size and shape.

Finally, to the question that most anglers consider the most important - the color of the bait.

Trout fishing is also interesting because its tastes change so quickly that there are two tactics left. Or bet on a specific color and or change lures of different colors every few casts. In real life, it turns out something in between.

There should be some minimum assortment of baits by color. But, in my opinion, you shouldn’t immediately rush to the store in search of a color that worked well for someone.

Choosing trout bait

Universal baits for rainbow trout are oscillating spoons. This is confirmed by the industry that produces iron for trout in the land of the rising sun. This bait is excellent for catching both trout and brown trout in various rivers. After all, the availability of a catch and its size depend on the quality of the bait. The spoon has the excellent property of sinking very quickly to the bottom of the reservoir due to its weight. This is very important for the trout fishing process.

Spinner for trout
You can also catch rainbow trout with a bait such as a spinner spoon. You can easily throw it in and calmly lay it on the bottom to start a petal. In the spring season, a spinning spoon will be better for trout.

A sinking compound minnow wobbler is an excellent bait for lakes and ponds where rainbow trout are active. He is able to collect all the predators in the nearest water area, including the trout for which you came to the paid reservoir.

You also need to use the right hooks for your lures. Single hooks are excellent for trout fishing, since they do not injure the fish itself, but at the same time they are very strong and reliable, which is quite important for catching large fish.

Where to start fishing at different times of the year

Fish activity depends on the season. Trout are considered cold-loving, so the peak bite occurs in the winter and spring months. Once on a pond in the spring, you need to choose active models of wobblers from your ammunition load. The color depends on the weather, water transparency and the mood of the fish. The administration of paid ponds tries to monitor the cleanliness of the reservoir, so in the cold season you can start with dark colors. However, the predator itself does not always favor natural colors. Having studied the set of wobblers for trout fishing by an experienced fisherman, you can understand that most of them are made in bright, provocative shades.

As the weather gets warmer, the fish become lethargic and don’t bite as often. In summer, the results show trout baits for twitching. The wiring is performed with noticeable pauses. Fish walking in the upper layers can be seen with the help of polarized glasses. This gives an advantage over other fishermen, especially if the spinner has an accurate cast.

In winter, the predator is caught from the ice using sinking baits, for example, rattlins. Color and size depend on the specific body of water, so don’t shy away from experimenting.

For trout with bombarda or sbirulino

The main disadvantage of miniature baits is the short cast. The thinnest cords increase the flight range, but reduce the safety margin. The power reserve of the set is necessary when fishing for trout, because the fish grows to a decent size, not to mention its fighting qualities.

Bombarda solves the problem by providing the ability to use even weightless bait, such as flies. The design allows you to set the depth of the equipment and cast it over long distances. In this way, you can fish not only the coastal zone. Wobblers for brown trout (an anadromous species of trout) are also used with sbirulino. The float performs well in a strong stream. The bombarda does not alarm the predator, since the length of the leash prevents it from noticing the float.

Lures

There are many different devices in this regard. But the most effective and most common are wobblers, spoons and spinners. They are the most suitable devices in this case. Let's look at them in more detail:

  • Rotating spoon for trout fishing. Its dimensions should not be large (No. 0-4). The main requirement for spinners is good and constant play both in the current and on it. It should be noted that when using these devices, overlaps can often occur. As a result, you need to use a leash or swivel. To increase the number of bites, you can replenish the spinners with twisters or flies.
  • Wobblers for trout. This is also an effective device. Anglers say that catching trout with wobblers depends on the speed at which they are playing. The lower it is, the greater the chances of getting a trophy. It is necessary in your arsenal to have several types of similar baits that work on slow retrieval. Wobblers that imitate trout have had great success. Since this individual often drives away other fish from its territory. This leads her to the bait. “Rapalovskie” wobblers are suitable for shallow water bodies. They also bear a strong resemblance to trout. Do not forget about the use of microwobblers in this case. Fishing with these devices is very convenient. After all, you can always pull it up or release it without having to cast again and without scaring away the fish.
  • Spoons for trout fishing. Although these lures are not used so often, they still pay off remarkably well. Small spoons of this type are usually used. For example, “Kastmaster” weighing several grams works very well with trout.
  • Spinner baits. They are American tackle. These are quite effective devices.
